POMARICO, Italy — On many evenings, when his busy pizza kitchen finally slows, Vincent Palma wipes the sweat from his brow and, just for a moment, steps away from his sweltering oven and mounds of soft flour and rising dough.

He pushes out past the swinging wooden doors, into a customer dining room featuring priceless historic images of the former life inside his bar and pizzeria, many taken before he was born.

Alone, as the nightly social buzz of this remote hill town goes out outside, Vinnie quietly relives a past that shaped him into the man he is today.

Those black-and-white photographs are filled with the colorful former regulars at Bar Palma, the popular hangout his father opened just after the end of World War Two.

It all seems so long ago, another life entirely, those days when big Antonio Palma called the shots in his little bar just across the courtyard from majestic St. Michael’s church. 

The regulars stare out from the photos with an energy that suggests they’re still here, ready to order another drink, tell a joke, or risk getting run out of the place by Antonio if they get too loud.

There was the old pharmacist named Catucci, who loved his coffee as he sat playing endless rounds of the card game tre sette. There was the guy who sold cigarettes. And Luigi, the regular with the vaudevillian talent to tell jokes that made everyone laugh, even the sour pusses who rarely cracked even a smile.

Even more cherished are the candid shots of his father and mother, Anna, and grandmother, Catarina, standing behind the var, in front of a huge colorful mural. as they ran the biggest show in town.

“Those pictures bring people back,” Vinnie says. “It feels sad that they’re not here anymore. They’re not here with me.”

On so many levels, Vinnie’s history tells a critical story of Southern Italian life and culture.

He was raised in a raucous bar culture where he learned the art form each man possesses to create his own unique public persona in a town full of characters.

Then, at the height of his success, his father suddenly gave it all away. 

He sold his bar and took his entire family to America, to New York City, to Brooklyn, which the old Italian men who never quite mastered this mysterious new language called English always called Brookolino.

Antonio Palma did it for his children, so they would enjoy opportunities that he did not have, even though poor Anna did not want to leave behind the only place she knew.

Even if you tried, you could not count the tears that poor Anna shed at the loss of her beloved Pomarico. 

But Antonio didn’t cry; he went to work.

At age 50, as hard as that sounds, he reinvented himself, working mostly manual labor jobs, never comfortable with his English, a fact that always made him feel a bit like an outsider in his new land.

Even as a young man, Vinnie knew the sacrifices his parents had made on his behalf. But inside, he held a longing for the home country, a light that could not be extinguished.

When he was old enough, after a tour in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Pomarico, where he met his wife, Maria, and settled down to raise a family.

And then Vinnie did something so many young Italian men seem driven to do, like it’s in their blood, a sense of family duty, delivered through their fathers’ strict rules and in all those wonderful meals their mothers made them.

He bought back Antonio’s old bar. In honor of his father and as a way to carry on something that was important to him.

When he looks at all those old pictures, this is what he thinks about.

About fantasies realized and opportunities lost, but mostly, that the immigrant chase for the American Dream doesn’t always work out.

Antonio grew up in a world of men and drink.

His own father, Michael, ran one of the so-called cantinas in Pomarico, where hard-working farmers sometimes went to break a loaf of bread and drink a bottle of wine when another day of labor was finally done.

After Michael’s death, a family feud between brothers forced Antonio out of the business. But the culture was in his blood, so he rented out space for another cantina and waited for his opportunity to own his own business.

The break came at an opportune time. 

The social culture was changing in Italy, and in small rural towns like Pomarico. New establishments known as bars were being opened, which served beer and spirits, places that became the sole domain of men; no women were allowed.

Finally, Antonio found the perfect spot, part of a house in a central pizza owned by his wife’s family. The problem was, it was located next to St. Michael’s church, and in this pious country, bars and churches were two ingredients that did not mix.

Nobody wanted the unsaved getting too close to the saved.

Luckily, both Antonio and his wife were active in the parish. They showed up to help with chores, and were well-known to the priests and the local archbishop, who decided to bend the rules.

In 1951, he gave his consent to allow the family to open up a drinking establishment within the shadow of the 18th Century church tower.

That’s when Bar Palma was born.

As it turned out, Antonio had a knack for enterprise.

He wanted to make Bar Palma the one place the town that customers — the  men, anyway — could not resist. 

Slowly, he added innovations such as homemade spumoni whose ingredients were as fresh as if the good Lord had delivered them himself — fresh milk and toasted almonds produced in the fields just outside of town.

Antonio brought in a jukebox that belted out songs by popular Roman singer Claudio Villa, Little Tony and Domenico Modugno, showing his regulars that music and drinking were damned good companions.

Always with the eye of keeping peace with his powerful neighbor, the nearby Catholic Church, Antonio also dreamt up an ingenious plan.

On the evenings when weddings were held, he’s roll his juke box outside and played the song Ave Maria, providing a charming soundtrack as the newlyweds made their way outside. 

The priests and bishops loved him for that. Antonio knew how to make friends.

Later, he bought one of the town’s first television sets. Each year, during the famous San Remo Festival, when Italians were introduced to the newest generation of singing talent, Antonio broadcast the event on the bar’s tiny black-and-white set.

Sure enough, that drew a crowd. 

The place was usually so packed he could barely keep up with the business. He finally weeded out the freeloaders — people who came to watch for free — by requiring customers to buy at least one drink, even a glass of milk.

Giuseppe Caldone, now 78, was one of Antonio’s regulars. 

The other day, he stood with Vinnie inside the pizzeria, looking at old photos. “I saw this kid when he was born,” he says, touching Vinnie lightly. “Now he owns the place.”

There are so many stories about how Antonio worked hard to make improvements and keep order in the place.

To keep the regulars busy and out of trouble, he once bought a carnival midway machine that once engaged with a few coins, allowed a player to operate a crane that dropped to scoop up a package of cigarettes from a pile below. 

Nobody could win the game. Until Giuseppe Caldone, an ironworker who used to shoe horses, figured out a trick at a bar on nearby Bernalda.

Suddenly, Giuseppe was winning not one, but two packs of cigarettes.

Boy that did that make Antonio mad, something you didn’t want to do.

If Antonio ever demonstrated a short fuse, it was when his beloved regulars began having a little too much fun, playing cards and yelling in dialect at outside tables, now far from the pastor’s bedroom window.

“He didn’t have much patience with those guys,” Vinnie says. “He threw them out.”

He’d grab a large wooden spoon he used to stir up the spumoni and race around the bar with it raised like a mallet.

That quieted the place down, and quickly.

What kid — Italian or any other — wouldn’t love growing up inside the family bar?

Vinnie’s brother, Michael, four years older, did most of the work helping out Antonio, leaving Vinnie to soak up the atmosphere. 

The regulars took care of Antonio’s younger son. They tousled his hair when he passed, taught him curse words in dialect. 

Once, when he was just seven, they used him to pull a prank on another bar regular.

They urged him to walk behind the man and slap the back of his head. As it turned out, the man wore a wig, which fell the floor.

The boys all laughed at that one. But how do you get mad at a young boy, especially one who was the owner’s son?

But the vivid life of men having fun would not last.

Antonio’s father in law, Jimmy, was actually a U.S. citizen, born in New York before his father returned to Pomarico when he was just five.

The Palma family had an inside route to American, which they put to good use.

Vinnie’s Uncle John was the first to emigrate in 1959. Nearly a decade later, he returned to Pomarico with stories of this new land of limitless opportunity. 

You had to work for it, Uncle John assured everyone, but America was a place that you could become somebody. John had started out as a dishwasher and worked his way up to a partner in the coffee shop. 

He climbed the ladder, later opening his own pizzeria.

Antonio was curious, not just for himself but for his two boys and daughter.

Anna had her doubts. Pomarico was her home; she didn’t want to leave. For her, moving to New York City was like stepping off the edge of the world.

But Antonio persisted. Uncle John could be their sponsor.

They had to go.

Even though the move was exciting, it was hard for Antonio to sell Bar Palma and give up all that he had created. His regulars also took it hard. Most started going to another bar after Antonio left town.

It was even harder for Anna, and for Vinnie, who was then in the 5th grade.

“The night before we left, all my friends came to my house to say goodbye,” he recalls. They were all crying. They figured they were never going to see me again.”

But they were wrong.

How do you describe what it’s like for a 10-year-old boy to move from a small town in southern Italy, one with maybe 5,000 residents tops, to the City That Never Sleeps?

No, the streets were not paved with gold; nobody believed that.

For a boy like Vinnie, it was even better than that. Who needed gold when you could look out at the Empire State Building, the crowned jewel of the Manhattan skyline?

He was awestruck as he took his first subway ride, visited Coney Island. Once on a trip through the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel that connects the borough to Manhattan, Uncle John leaned in low and whispered in the boys ear.

“Do you know that, right now,” he said, “we’re under water?”

Wait, what? 

That sealed it. 

Vincent Palma was no longer in Pomarico. He was no small town Southern Italian kid. He was in America.

For Antonio, the transition was far less glamorous. He went from being an entrepreneur with his own bar to a manual laborer who didn’t speak the language.

A promise from Uncle John of a job in his pizzeria didn’t pan out. So Antonio want to work in a factory that made plastic bags. 

Then he worked in a butcher shop. No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t seem to catch a break that would lift him out of the lower class.

Anna had it even worse. 

So many times, the would retreat to the basement of the family one in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn and cry. 

She missed her friends, her family, her hometown. She had begun to resent this place where she did not understand the language or make herself understood.

Sometimes, Vinnie would go with his mother to the basement. And when he watched her cry, he would cry, too.

Finally, after years of hard work and too little pay, Antonio Palma made a return to his entrepreneurial roots.

He bought an ice cream truck, and drove the streets of Brooklyn, a new franchise owner  selling Freezer Fresh ice cream. There were two choices, chocolate or vanilla, but for Antonio it was a dream come true. 

He’d drive his truck, ring his bell to summon his young customers, with his son Vinnie often there to help him out.

For the last few years, it had been Vinnie’s turn to suffer from the strange rocket-entry into urban American culture.

When he arrived in Brooklyn, Vinnie started the 6th grade not speaking a word of  English. The other kids in his largely-black school, PS-135, picked on the Italian kid who couldn’t speak the language, even to try and defend himself.

They’d stop him outside school, rifle his pockets for gum and lunch money until he got old enough to fight back. His language skills might not have worked, but his fists spoke just fine. 

Until Anna complained and Vinnie moved to a white school in the nearby Canarsie neighborhood.

Vinnie graduated high school in 1977, his future anything but clear.

His older brother, Micheal, was working at Uncle John’s Pizzeria and his sister Maria Teresa worked at a bank in the World Trade Center.

Vinnie enlisted in the Navy, lured by ads he’d seen on television. He attended boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois before spending three years attached to the USS Charleston, an amphibious assault ship based out of Norfolk Va.

When he got out in 1980, his thoughts returned to Pomarico, the place he could not get out of his system.

He’d planned to visit for just a few months.

His mother told him, “Look for a local girl, someone you can settle down with.”

He took his mother’s advice. He first spotted Maria Armandi walking with a girlfriend near the former monastery that had become the town hall.

He liked her right away, but their courtship was slow-going. For one, Vinnie was a young man fresh from time in America. In Pomarico, people like him had a reputation as a fast-mover, a playboy.

The two couldn’t even walk together on the street without some nosy widow reporting the sighting to Maria’s mother. “I could’t even get a kiss,” Vinnie recalls, “God forbid.”

Finally, he stole one. It was in the middle of a hidden flight of stairs and he leaned in.

“She wasn’t too happy,” Vinnie recalls.

Maria recalls it differently. “If I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t have kissed him.”

Vinnie turned to Brooklyn in the late fall of 1980, but not before promising Maria that he would be back to marry her. 

They exchanged letters, keeping the relationship alive while Maria continue to help her mother, sewing shirts and sweaters.

They married in 1984 and for several years, bounced back and forth between Pomarico and Brooklyn. But Vinnie still talked with his father about returning home full time. 

“What are you gonna do there?” Antonio would ask.

“I don’t know,” the son said. “Maybe buy back the bar.”

Giovanni Bengiovanni, the man who bought Bar Palma, had long teased Vinnie about buying it back. It was only a matter of time before he gave in.

Meanwhile, life in Brooklyn was harder for Maria. She was at home all day with their first child, son Antonio, while Vinnie worked at Uncle John’s pizzeria.

Something had to give, and it did when daughter, Annalisa, was born in 1989.

Maria wanted to take the baby home to visit her parents. That trip set off something that had been simmering for years, a longing to finally return home for good.

In 1991, Vinnie bought back Bar Palma. The place hadn’t changed. The old mural behind the bar was still there, and remains so. So does the old fan that saves lives on hot summer nights.

“It was a proud day for me,” Vinnie  recalls. “I now send the same bar my father used t own. I was carrying on a family tradition.”

Now all those kids who cried when he left Pomarico as a boy were his regular customers. Even a few old timers like Giuseppe Caldone were still around.

But Antonio never got to see it. He had died several years before, in 1986, when his youngest son, Vincent was just 26.

They brought his body back to Pomarico for burial and held the funeral in a small church near the monastery in town that now serves as city hall. After the ceremony, you men clamored to help carry the casket to the cemetery.

Vinnie’s eyes tear up as he tells the story. The men carried the casket a half mile in the opposite direction, to the front of Bar Palma, Antonio’s domain in life before carrying it back two miles in the other direction to the cemetery.

That was the way Pomarico put one of its beloved own to rest.

Nearly a decade earlier, in 1979, Antonio had gone back to Pomarico for a visit. 

Of course, he looked up is old friend Caldone, the ring leader of the old gang at Bar Palma. Over the years, the two had stayed in contact. Giuseppe used to ride along with Antonio when he went to the countryside each morning to get the milk to make his spumoni.

When his mother Caterina brought in a plate of fresh pasta to the bar for her son to eat, Antonio shared with with Giuseppe.

Now, years later, as the two shared a few drinks, Antonio made a confession to his old friend: He wished he’d never sold Bar Palma, wished he’d never gone to America.

It was an admission tragic enough to break your heart.

Everyone was glad to see the kid back in town, now as the proprietor of the bar where as a boy he used to pick up empty bottles of beer.

They teased him about being from America, called him Reagan after the popular Republican president. So Vinnie changed the name of the place.

From then on, Bar Palma was known as Bar Reagan.

Two years after he arrived, his mother and sister moved back to Pomarico as well. Vinnie moved back into the house where he was born.

His return was complete; only Antonio was missing.

For 32 years, Bar Reagan has been a mainstay of Pomarico’s social life. Like his father, Vinnie has kept good relations with the Catholic Church.

But he is not Antonio; he wields no large wooden mallet. He just doesn’t have it in him to come out barking at regulars who get too loud. Maria handles that job. She runs the bar side of the business and the men respect her. 

One look is enough to tell anyone to pipe down.

Unlike many here who dream one day of visiting America, Vincent Palma has been there. For two decades, he lived the American Dream, in the end preferring to return to Pomarico. He doesn’t lie awake at night, imagining a life elsewhere.

He loves Pomarico for what it was. 

And is.

He tells people that, sure, life is good in America, if you work hard, but it can be just as food here at home with a job to support you and your family. 

In a town rife with unemployment, that’s a big if.

But after more than three decades of running their own business, with too little time for themselves, Vinnie and Maria are thinking of retiring.

They only wish for a happier ending, another Palma son who waited in the wings to carry on the Bar Palma tradition.

But the couple’s son, Antonio, isn’t interested. And their daughter, Annalisa, has two young children.

And so he faces the prospect that the Palma name will no longer be associated with the good times in Pomarico.

Thirteen years ago, during a visit to Brooklyn, Uncle John gave Vinnie as treasure chest of old photos. “Take these,” he said. “When I die, they’ll just throw them out. They’ll be good for you, to remember the old days.”

Vinnie knows that nothing lasts forever; not beloved fathers, mothers, uncles.

Or even family-run bars.

And when he looks at the black and white pictures hanging inside his beloved pizzeria, bringing back to life the grand times of the past, he thinks about that, too.

POMARICO GIORNALE: Il baretto che Antonio ha costruito

POMARICO, Italia — Molte sere, quando la sua cucina indaffarata finalmente rallenta, Vincent Palma si asciuga il sudore dalla fronte e, solo per un momento, si allontana dal suo forno afoso e dai cumuli di farina morbida e dall’impasto lievitato della pizza.

Sembra tutto così lontano, tutta un’altra vita, quei giorni in cui il grande Antonio Palma dettava legge nel suo piccolo bar proprio di fronte al cortile della maestosa chiesa di San Michele.

I clienti abituali guardano fuori dalle foto con un’energia che suggerisce che sono ancora qui, pronti a ordinare un altro drink, raccontare una barzelletta o rischiare di essere buttati fuori dal locale da Antonio se diventano troppo rumorosi.

C’era il vecchio farmacista di nome Catucci, che amava il suo caffè mentre sedeva giocando infinite partite al gioco delle carte tre sette. C’era il tizio che vendeva sigarette.

E Luigi, l’abituale con il talento vaudevilliano di raccontare barzellette che facevano ridere tutti, anche le fighe amareggiate che raramente abbozzavano anche un sorriso.

Ancora più amati sono gli scatti spontanei di suo padre e sua madre, Anna, e nonna, Catarina, in piedi dietro il var, davanti a un enorme murale colorato. mentre gestivano il più grande spettacolo in città.

“Quelle foto riportano indietro le persone”, dice Vinnie. “È triste che non siano più qui. Non sono qui con me.

Su così tanti livelli, la storia di Vinnie racconta una storia critica della vita e della cultura del sud Italia.

All’età di 50 anni, per quanto possa sembrare difficile, si è reinventato, facendo per lo più lavori manuali, mai a suo agio con il suo inglese, un fatto che lo ha sempre fatto sentire un po’ come un outsider nella sua nuova terra.

Fin da giovane, Vinnie conosceva i sacrifici che i suoi genitori avevano fatto per lui. Ma dentro, conservava un desiderio per la patria, una luce che non poteva essere spenta.

Ha ricomprato il vecchio bar di Antonio. In onore di suo padre e come un modo per portare avanti qualcosa che per lui era importante.

Quando guarda tutte quelle vecchie foto, ecco a cosa pensa.

A proposito di fantasie realizzate e opportunità perse, ma soprattutto, che la caccia agli immigrati per il sogno americano non sempre funziona.

Antonio è cresciuto in un mondo di uomini e alcolici.

Suo padre, Michael, gestiva una delle cosiddette cantine di Pomarico, dove a volte i contadini laboriosi andavano a spezzare una pagnotta e bere una bottiglia di vino quando finalmente un’altra giornata di lavoro era terminata.

Dopo la morte di Michael, una faida familiare tra fratelli costrinse Antonio a lasciare l’attività. Ma la cultura era nel suo sangue, quindi ha affittato lo spazio per un’altra cantina e ha aspettato la sua opportunità di possedere un’attività in proprio.

La rottura è arrivata al momento opportuno.

La cultura sociale stava cambiando in Italia, e in piccoli centri rurali come Pomarico.

Si stavano aprendo nuovi locali detti bar, che servivano birra e liquori, luoghi che divennero dominio esclusivo degli uomini; nessuna donna era ammessa.

Alla fine, Antonio ha trovato il posto perfetto, parte di una casa in una pizzeria centrale di proprietà della famiglia di sua moglie. Il problema era che si trovava accanto alla chiesa di San Michele, e in questo pio paese bar e chiese erano due ingredienti che non si mescolavano.

Nessuno voleva che i non salvati si avvicinassero troppo ai salvati.

Per fortuna sia Antonio che sua moglie erano attivi in ​​parrocchia. Si sono presentati per aiutare nelle faccende domestiche ed erano ben noti ai sacerdoti e all’arcivescovo locale, che ha deciso di infrangere le regole.

Nel 1951 diede il suo consenso per consentire alla famiglia di aprire un locale per bere all’ombra del campanile della chiesa del XVIII secolo.

Fu allora che nacque il Bar Palma.

Come si è scoperto, Antonio aveva un talento naturale per l’impresa.

Voleva fare del Bar Palma l’unico posto in città a cui i clienti – gli uomini, per lo meno – non potevano resistere.

Lentamente, aggiunse innovazioni come gli spumoni fatti in casa i cui ingredienti erano freschi come se li avesse portati il ​​buon Dio stesso: latte fresco e mandorle tostate prodotti nei campi appena fuori città.

Antonio ha portato un jukebox che cantava a squarciagola le canzoni del famoso cantante romano Claudio Villa, Little Tony e Domenico Modugno, mostrando ai suoi clienti abituali che la musica e il bere erano dannatamente buoni compagni.

Per tenere i clienti abituali occupati e fuori dai guai, una volta ha acquistato una macchina a metà strada di carnevale che una volta impegnata con poche monete, ha permesso a un giocatore di azionare una gru che è caduta per raccogliere un pacchetto di sigarette da una pila sottostante.

Nessuno poteva vincere la partita. Fino a quando Giuseppe Caldone, un fabbro che ferrava i cavalli, escogitò un trucco in un bar della vicina Bernalda.

Improvvisamente, Giuseppe stava vincendo non uno, ma due pacchetti di sigarette.

Ragazzo che ha fatto arrabbiare Antonio, qualcosa che non volevi fare.

Se Antonio ha mai dimostrato una miccia corta, è stato quando i suoi amati clienti abituali hanno iniziato a divertirsi un po’ troppo, giocando a carte e urlando in dialetto ai tavoli all’aperto, ormai lontani dalla finestra della camera del parroco.

“Non aveva molta pazienza con quei ragazzi”, dice Vinnie. «Li ha buttati fuori.»
Prendeva un grosso cucchiaio di legno che usava per mescolare lo spumoni e correva intorno al bancone sollevandolo come un martello.

Ciò ha calmato il posto, e rapidamente.

A quale bambino, italiano o altro, non piacerebbe crescere nel bar di famiglia?

Il fratello di Vinnie, Michael, di quattro anni più grande, ha svolto la maggior parte del lavoro aiutando Antonio, lasciando che Vinnie assorbisse l’atmosfera.

I clienti abituali si prendevano cura del figlio minore di Antonio. Gli scompigliavano i capelli quando passava, gli insegnavano parolacce in dialetto.

Una volta, quando aveva solo sette anni, lo usarono per fare uno scherzo a un altro cliente abituale del bar.

Lo hanno esortato a camminare dietro l’uomo e schiaffeggiarlo sulla nuca. Come si è scoperto, l’uomo indossava una parrucca, che cadde sul pavimento.

Tutti i ragazzi hanno riso di quello. Ma come ti arrabbi con un ragazzino, specialmente uno che era il figlio del proprietario?

Ma la vivida vita degli uomini che si divertono non sarebbe durata.

Il suocero di Antonio, Jimmy, era in realtà un cittadino statunitense, nato a New York prima che suo padre tornasse a Pomarico quando aveva appena cinque anni.

La famiglia Palma aveva una rotta interna verso l’America, di cui fecero buon uso.

Lo zio John di Vinnie fu il primo a emigrare nel 1959. Quasi un decennio dopo, tornò a Pomarico con storie di questa nuova terra di opportunità illimitate.

Dovevi lavorare per questo, lo zio John ha assicurato a tutti, ma l’America era un posto in cui potevi diventare qualcuno. John aveva iniziato come lavapiatti e si era fatto strada fino a diventare un socio nella caffetteria.

Ha scalato la scala, aprendo in seguito la sua pizzeria.

Antonio era curioso, non solo per se stesso ma anche per i suoi due ragazzi e la figlia.

Anna aveva i suoi dubbi.

Pomarico era la sua casa; non voleva andarsene. Per lei, trasferirsi a New York City è stato come uscire dai confini del mondo.

Ma Antonio insisteva. Zio John potrebbe essere il loro sponsor.

Dovevano andare.

Anche se il trasferimento è stato entusiasmante, è stato difficile per Antonio vendere il Bar Palma e rinunciare a tutto ciò che aveva creato. Anche i suoi clienti abituali l’hanno presa duramente. La maggior parte ha iniziato ad andare in un altro bar dopo che Antonio ha lasciato la città.

Fu ancora più difficile per Anna e per Vinnie, che allora frequentava la quinta elementare.

“La sera prima di partire, tutti i miei amici sono venuti a casa mia per salutarmi”, ricorda. Stavano tutti piangendo. Hanno pensato che non mi avrebbero più rivisto.”

Ma si sbagliavano.

Come descrivi com’è per un bambino di 10 anni trasferirsi da una piccola città del sud Italia, una con forse 5.000 abitanti al massimo, nella Città che non dorme mai?

No, le strade non erano lastricate d’oro; nessuno ci credeva.

Per un ragazzo come Vinnie, era anche meglio di così. Chi aveva bisogno dell’oro quando si poteva ammirare l’Empire State Building, il gioiello incoronato dello skyline di Manhattan?

Era sbalordito mentre faceva il suo primo viaggio in metropolitana, visitando Coney Island.

Una volta durante un viaggio attraverso il tunnel Brooklyn-Battery che collega il quartiere a Manhattan, lo zio John si sporse in basso e sussurrò all’orecchio del ragazzo.

“Lo sai che, in questo momento”, disse, “siamo sott’acqua?”

Aspetta cosa?

Questo l’ha sigillato.

Vincenzo Palma non era più a Pomarico. Non era un ragazzino del sud dell’Italia di provincia. Era in America.

Per Antonio, la transizione è stata molto meno affascinante. È passato dall’essere un imprenditore con il suo bar a un lavoratore manuale che non parlava la lingua.

Una promessa dello zio John di un lavoro nella sua pizzeria non ha funzionato. Così Antonio vuole lavorare in una fabbrica che produce buste di plastica.

Poi ha lavorato in una macelleria. Non importa quanto ci provasse, sembrava che non riuscisse a prendersi una pausa che lo avrebbe sollevato dalla classe inferiore.

Ad Anna è andata anche peggio.

Tante volte si ritiravano nel seminterrato di quello di famiglia nella sezione East Flatbush di Brooklyn e piangevano.

Le mancavano i suoi amici, la sua famiglia, la sua città natale. Aveva cominciato a risentirsi per questo posto dove non capiva la lingua o non si faceva capire.

A volte, Vinnie andava con sua madre nel seminterrato. E quando la guardava piangere, piangeva anche lui.

Finalmente, dopo anni di duro lavoro e troppo poco stipendio, Antonio Palma è tornato alle sue radici imprenditoriali.

Ha comprato un camioncino dei gelati e ha guidato per le strade di Brooklyn, un nuovo proprietario in franchising che vende gelati Freezer Fresh. C’erano due scelte, cioccolato o vaniglia, ma per Antonio era un sogno che si avverava.

Guidava il suo camion, suonava il campanello per chiamare i suoi giovani clienti, con suo figlio Vinnie spesso lì per aiutarlo.

Negli ultimi anni, era stato il turno di Vinnie di subire lo strano ingresso a razzo nella cultura urbana americana.

Quando è arrivato a Brooklyn, Vinnie ha iniziato la prima media senza parlare una parola di inglese.

Gli altri ragazzi della sua scuola in gran parte nera, PS-135, se la prendevano con il ragazzo italiano che non sapeva parlare la lingua, anche per cercare di difendersi.

Lo fermavano fuori da scuola, gli frugavano nelle tasche in cerca di gomme da masticare e soldi per il pranzo finché non fosse diventato abbastanza grande per reagire.

Le sue abilità linguistiche potrebbero non aver funzionato, ma i suoi pugni parlavano bene.

Finché Anna non si è lamentata e Vinnie si è trasferita in una scuola per bianchi nel vicino quartiere di Canarsie.

Vinnie si è diplomato al liceo nel 1977, il suo futuro tutt’altro che chiaro.

Suo fratello maggiore, Micheal, lavorava alla pizzeria dello zio John e sua sorella Maria Teresa lavorava in una banca nel World Trade Center.

Vinnie si arruolò in Marina, attirato dalle pubblicità che aveva visto in televisione. Ha frequentato il campo di addestramento a Great Lakes, Illinois, prima di trascorrere tre anni attaccato alla USS Charleston, una nave d’assalto anfibia con base a Norfolk Va.

Quando uscì nel 1980, i suoi pensieri tornarono a Pomarico, il luogo che non poteva uscire dal suo sistema.

Ma dopo più di trent’anni di attività in proprio, con troppo poco tempo per se stessi, Vinnie e Maria stanno pensando di andare in pensione.

Desiderano solo un lieto fine, un altro figlio Palma che ha aspettato dietro le quinte per portare avanti la tradizione del Bar Palma.

Ma il figlio della coppia, Antonio, non è interessato. E la loro figlia, Annalisa, ha due bambini piccoli.

E così affronta la prospettiva che il nome Palma non sarà più associato ai bei tempi di Pomarico.

Tredici anni fa, durante una visita a Brooklyn, lo zio John regalò a Vinnie come scrigno di vecchie foto.

«Prendi questi» disse. “Quando morirò, li butteranno via. Ti faranno bene, per ricordare i vecchi tempi.

Vinnie sa che niente dura per sempre; non amati padri, madri, zii.

O anche bar a conduzione familiare.

E quando guarda le foto in bianco e nero appese all’interno della sua amata pizzeria, che riportano in vita i grandi tempi del passato, pensa anche a quello.
