POMARICO, Italy — Over the summer, I have attended many masses at this town’s venerable St. Michael’s church. With its tower looming over the piazza where I get my morning coffee, the 1780s cathedral swallows the sky, like an encroaching planet that hovers closely.

Inside, the masses are all delivered in Italian which, for me, makes the worshipping somehow more exotic, recalling my youth as an altar boy, when all was conducted in Latin.

But I notice something as I sit on the hard wooden pews, the ones without pads on which to kneel throughout the service.

The masses are not well-attended, especially for a country that is supposedly known for its devout Catholicism.

And those who come are mainly the elderly. In the weeks that I have attended mass, I don’t think I have ever seen a single teenager there.

How can the Catholic church survive in the long run with such a diminished following? 

I ask my friend, Don Roberto, a visiting priest from India, and his face grows concerned. Yes, he says, the numbers are down. 

But they do have baptisms now and then, and that’s got to count for something, right?

Well, not really, not much.

According to statistics from the Pew Research center, some 83% of Italians identify as being Catholic, but only 31% attend church at least once a week.

The relationship between Italian government and Catholicism, it seems, is complicated, as the population grows increasingly apathetic.

I want to find a way to write about this brain-drain from the church.

What do the believers say? And the disbelievers?

Then I find that the story is right here, before my eyes.

In my own extended Italian family.

My cousin, Giovanni Glionna, now 85, raised a family of three daughters. Years ago, they were all regular church-goers. But over the years, that has slowly changed.

Giovanni and his wife, Laura, attend church rarely, if ever. Their two oldest daughters, Antonia and Maria, and their families, don’t go that much either.

That leaves Mimma, the youngest, who lives in an apartment right over her parents, with her husband, Vincenzo, and her three grown sons, Giovanni, Christian and Gabriel.

Almost no one in the household goes to church. When I ask 19-year-old Gabriel the other day, he just shrugs his shoulders.

But Mimma does.

Her faith is strong. It has been that way since she was a girl. She practices her religious commitment as a wife and mother. She teaches Catechism to children at the church school and is the member of the choir.

For her, the church provides a vital sense of community, a cohesive bond that she needs on her life. It makes her more whole.

So what happened to the others?

We’re at the dinner table when I bring up the subject.

What’s going on with the Catholic Church in Pomarico? 

Giovanni is there, and so is Mimma and two of her sons. Laura comes back and forth from the kitchen, delivering plates of pasta and meat and fruit.

She, too, like her daughter, has a strong sense of faith, yet does not attend mass regularly.

Her nickname is Laura Christa, or Saint Laura.

Giovanni sits to my left. He always drinks a glass of red wine at meals, sipping slowly, pensively. Out the the bar with his friends each afternoon, it’s Peroni beer.

On cue, after only a slight pause to collect his thoughts, my elderly cousin launches into a discourse on the failings of the Catholic Church.

Like many of his generation here in the Mezzogiorno, in Italy’s southernmost reaches, he sees the church as yet another institution living on the sweat of the working class.

From the beginning, he says, the Catholic hierarchy has only looked out for itself.

Following the Risorgimento, Italy’s unification in the 1860s, the Vatican summoned Catholics and foreign governments worldwide to destabilize the newly-formed government.

The church indeed had much to lose, not only in wealth and land, but the new nation was also a potent challenge to its authority.

As William Giovinazzo writes in his book, Italianitá, “the empowerment the spirit of the Risorgimento gave to the common Italian placed the priests, bishops, cardinals, and pope at the same level as the contadini, the common Italian.”

Many saw it as an almost unholy alliance.

“These common people whose daily mass was cow manure and fish offal [now] have the same access to God as the church aristocracy that drank wine from golden challises,” Giovinazzo writes.

At the table, as he talks, I spot Giovanni glancing over at his daughter, Mimma. I swear there is a hint of a smile on his face, like he’s a father, an authority figure, using the dinner table as a pulpit to challenge the beliefs of a wayward child.

Is he just teasing his youngest daughter, or does he believe this?

Mimma shrinks from the table, hiding herself behind the shoulder of her youngest son.

She glowers at her father.

As a child, Mimma was an altar server. She has always believed.

She assisted at services along two friends, and recalls the hallowed joy at being a central part of the mass, there at the right hand of the priest. They are good memories, and she smiles when she sees young girls today playing the same role.

Mimma says she owes the development of her faith to parents who, “even if their attendance at church was not constant, have always taught me to love God.”

Growing up, her church attendance was a constant, until she got married.

As a new wife and mother, she felt pressure to concentrate on her home life. Suddenly, there wasn’t time for services. “I distanced myself from the church, from what I believed,” she says. “The family came first.”

As time passed, however, she felt something missing from her life. Even if she prayed from home, it wasn’t the same. She didn’t feel as connected to her faith. “I couldn’t attend church as I wanted,” she says, “and this thing made me suffer.”

She doesn’t agree with her mother or sisters, who say they have faith, but just do not go to church. For Mimma, faith means attendance.

Years later, as her boys got older, she was able to “reorganize” her life. She returned to the church. “I was finally able to fill that void that was bothering me and, by getting organized, I was finally able to dedicate myself to my family and to Jesus.”

And the church embraced her. The parish priest asked her to become a catechist, a lay helper. The new responsibilities boosted her self-confidence in a way she had never felt before.

Then her friend, Olly, invited her to join the choir, a commitment that required attending regular meetings and practices. She dove in, overjoyed. “I didn’t think twice.”

The fact that no one else in her family joins her each week at mass upsets her, she says, “but it is their choice.”

Giovanni and I are walking on his plot of family farmland outside town.

He is proud of this place, what he has accomplished here, the bounty he has coaxed from the ground, with his own two bare hands.

It is a Saturday afternoon, and I ask if he is planning to attend mass that evening to hear Mimma sing in the choir. I know it would please her.

Giovanni looks at me.

“I don’t  need to go to church to hear my daughter sing,” he says, motioning the rows of plants around him. “This is my church. This is where I come to sing.”

He launches into arguments I have heard him make before.

There are two concepts presented to mankind, he says, science and faith.

You can’t have both. You can’t believe in science like the natural development of our species and also believe in angels and devils and life in the hereafter.

Those who once believed the myths were largely uneducated, but now young people have the Internet. They can do their own research and make up their own minds.

He says that most of the world’s wars were started over religion, over one said saying their God was the right one and they would fight you to prove it. 

Now the church passes the collection baskets each week, he says, and for what?

The priests and bishops and popes in Rome have never done an honest day’s work in their entire lives, not like the farmers here in the south.

The Vatican has too many generals and not enough common soldiers.

“You give to the land and it gives you something back,” he says. “But not the church. the church only takes.”

We are at the dinner table and I listen to both sides, father and daughter, talking about what they believe and what they do not.

I suggest that we invite Don Roberto, the visiting priest from India, to dinner.

Giovanni shakes his head, while Mimma appeals to her mother in the kitchen.

I cannot tell how strongly Giovanni believes what he preaches, or whether he is justing trying to get a rise out of Mimma.

Sometimes, when her father starts in, she jokingly hovers over him, as if to exact some sort of punishment, But it is all playful, the repertoire.

I say that no matter what he believes, that Mimma still prays for him every night.

For Mimma, however, this is not all play. She holds onto her faith.

“I know perfectly well that my Dad, when he sees me coming back from mass or singing rehearsals, makes fun of me, but only to make me angry,” she says. 

“And in any case, he never succeeds because, smiling, I turn around and like a little girl I stick my tongue out at him.”

She loves her father, both her parents, and only wants them to feel the joy of believing.

But she knows that time is fleeting, and so she accepts them as they are.

“One day they will no longer be there and I suffer a lot and cry a lot,” she says. “I always pray to God to make them stay with us forever.”

And with that prayer, she hopes the Lord is listening.

POMARICO GIORNALE: Una famiglie italiane lotta con sua fede

POMARICO, Italia — Durante l’estate ho partecipato a molte messe nella chiesa di San Michele. Con la sua torre che incombe sulla piazza dove prendo il caffè mattutino, la vecchia cattedrale inghiotte il cielo, come un pianeta invadente che si libra troppo vicino.

All’interno, le messe sono tutte pronunciate in italiano, per me rendere l’adorazione molto più esotica, ricordando la mia giovinezza da chierichetto, quando tutto era condotto in latino.

Ma noto qualcosa mentre mi siedo sui duri banchi di legno, quelli senza imbottiture su cui inginocchiarsi per tutta la funzione.

Le messe non sono molto frequentate, soprattutto per un paese che si suppone sia noto per il suo devoto cattolicesimo.

E quelli che vengono sono principalmente gli anziani. Nelle settimane in cui ho assistito alla messa, credo di non aver mai visto lì un solo adolescente.

Come può la chiesa cattolica sopravvivere a lungo termine con un seguito così ridotto?

Chiedo al mio amico don Roberto, sacerdote in visita dall’India, e il suo volto si fa preoccupato. Sì, dice, i numeri sono in calo.

Ma hanno battesimi di tanto in tanto, e questo deve contare qualcosa, giusto?

Beh, non proprio, non molto.

Secondo le statistiche del centro Pew Research, circa l’83% degli italiani
si identifica come cattolico, ma solo il 31% va in chiesa almeno una volta alla settimana.

Il rapporto tra il governo italiano e il cattolicesimo, a quanto pare, è complicato, poiché la popolazione diventa sempre più apatica.

Voglio trovare un modo per scrivere di questa fuga di cervelli dalla chiesa.

Cosa dicono i credenti? E i miscredenti?

Poi scopro che la storia è proprio qui, davanti ai miei occhi.

Nella mia famiglia italiana allargata.

Mio cugino, Giovanni Glionna, che ora ha 85 anni, ha allevato una famiglia di tre figlie. Anni fa, erano tutti frequentatori regolari della chiesa. Ma nel corso degli anni, questo è lentamente cambiato.

Giovanni e sua moglie Laura vanno in chiesa raramente, se non mai. Anche le loro due figlie maggiori, Antonia e Maria, e le loro famiglie, non ci vanno molto.

Resta Mimma, la più piccola, che vive in un appartamento proprio sopra i genitori, con il marito Vincenzo ei tre figli adulti, Giovanni, Christian e Gabriel.

Quasi nessuno in casa va in chiesa. Quando l’altro giorno ho chiesto a Gabriel, 19 anni, si è limitato a scrollare le spalle.

Ma Mimma sì.

La sua fede è forte. È stato così fin da quando era una ragazza. Pratica il suo impegno religioso come moglie e madre. Insegna catechismo ai bambini nella scuola della chiesa ed è membro del coro.

Per lei, la chiesa fornisce un vitale senso di comunità, un legame coeso di cui ha bisogno nella sua vita. La rende più completa.

Quindi cosa è successo agli altri?

Siamo a tavola quando sollevo l’argomento.

Cosa sta succedendo alla Chiesa Cattolica di Pomarico?

Giovanni c’è, anche Mimma ei suoi due figli. Laura va avanti e indietro dalla cucina, consegnando piatti di pasta, carne e frutta.

Laura, come sua figlia, ha un forte senso della fede, ma non frequenta regolarmente la messa.

Il suo soprannome è Laura Christa, o Santa Laura.

Giovanni siede alla mia sinistra. Beve sempre un bicchiere di vino rosso ai pasti, sorseggiandolo lentamente, pensieroso. Fuori al bar con i suoi amici ogni pomeriggio, è la birra Peroni.

Al momento giusto, dopo solo una breve pausa per raccogliere i suoi pensieri, il mio anziano cugino si lancia in un discorso sui fallimenti della Chiesa cattolica.

Come molti della sua generazione qui nel Mezzogiorno, nelle zone più meridionali d’Italia, vede la chiesa come un’altra istituzione che vive del sudore della classe operaia.

Fin dall’inizio, dice, la gerarchia cattolica ha badato solo a se stessa.

Dopo il Risorgimento, l’Unità d’Italia nel 1860, il Vaticano convocò cattolici e governi stranieri in tutto il mondo per destabilizzare il governo appena formato.

La chiesa aveva davvero molto da perdere, non solo in ricchezza e terra, ma la nuova nazione rappresentava anche una potente sfida alla sua autorità.

Come scrive Guglielmo Giovinazzo nel suo libro Italianità, «l’emancipazione che lo spirito del Risorgimento diede all’italiano comune poneva i preti, i vescovi, i cardinali e il papa allo stesso livello dei contadini, l’italiano comune».

Molti l’hanno vista come un’alleanza quasi empia.

“Queste persone comuni la cui messa quotidiana era letame di vacca e frattaglie di pesce [ora] hanno lo stesso accesso a Dio dell’aristocrazia della chiesa che beveva vino da challises dorati”, scrive Giovinazzo.

A tavola, mentre parla, vedo Giovanni che guarda sua figlia Mimma. Giuro che c’è un accenno di sorriso sul suo volto, come se fosse un padre, una figura autoritaria, che usa il tavolo da pranzo come pulpito per sfidare le convinzioni di un bambino ribelle.

Sta solo prendendo in giro la figlia più giovane o ci crede?

Mimma si ritrae dal tavolo, nascondendosi dietro la spalla del suo vecchio figlio.

Lei guarda in cagnesco suo padre.

Da piccola Mimma faceva la chierichetto. Lei ha sempre creduto.

Ha assistito alle funzioni insieme a due amici e ricorda la gioia sacra di essere parte centrale della messa, lì alla destra del sacerdote. Sono bei ricordi, e sorride quando vede le ragazzine di oggi interpretare lo stesso ruolo.

Mimma dice di dover lo sviluppo della sua fede ai genitori che, «anche se la loro frequenza in chiesa non era costante, mi hanno sempre insegnato ad amare Dio».

Crescendo, la sua frequenza in chiesa è stata una costante, fino a quando non si è sposata.

Come nuova moglie e madre, sentiva la pressione di concentrarsi sulla sua vita familiare. All’improvviso, non c’era tempo per i servizi. “Ho preso le distanze dalla chiesa, da ciò in cui credevo”, dice. “La famiglia è venuta prima di tutto”.

Col passare del tempo, tuttavia, sentiva che qualcosa mancava nella sua vita. Anche se pregava da casa, non era la stessa cosa. Non si sentiva legata alla sua fede. “Non potevo andare in chiesa come volevo”, dice, “e questa cosa mi ha fatto soffrire”.

Non è d’accordo con sua madre o le sorelle, che dicono di avere fede, ma semplicemente non vanno in chiesa. Per Mimma fede significa presenza.

Anni dopo, quando i suoi ragazzi sono cresciuti, è stata in grado di “riorganizzare” la sua vita. È tornata in chiesa. “Finalmente ho potuto riempire quel vuoto che mi dava fastidio e, organizzandomi, ho potuto finalmente dedicarmi alla mia famiglia e a Gesù”.

E la chiesa l’ha abbracciata. Il parroco le chiede di diventare catechista, aiutante laica. Le nuove responsabilità aumentarono la sua autostima in un modo che non aveva mai provato prima.

Quindi la sua amica, Olly, l’ha invitata a unirsi al coro, un impegno che richiedeva la partecipazione a riunioni e pratiche regolari. Si è tuffata, felicissima. “Non ci ho pensato due volte.”

Il fatto che nessun altro della sua famiglia si unisca a lei ogni settimana alla messa la sconvolge, dice, “ma è una loro scelta”.

Io e Giovanni stiamo passeggiando nel suo appezzamento di terreno agricolo di famiglia fuori città.

È orgoglioso di questo posto, di ciò che ha realizzato qui, della generosità che ha ottenuto da terra, con le sue stesse mani nude.

È un sabato pomeriggio e gli chiedo se ha intenzione di andare a messa quella sera per sentire Mimma cantare nel coro. So che le farebbe piacere.

Gianni mi guarda.

“Non ho bisogno di andare in chiesa per sentire cantare mia figlia”, dice, indicando le file di piante intorno a lui. “Questa è la mia chiesa. Qui è dove vengo a cantare.

Si lancia in argomenti che gli ho già sentito fare prima.

Ci sono due concetti presentati all’umanità, dice, scienza e fede.

Non puoi avere entrambi. Non puoi credere nella scienza come lo sviluppo naturale della nostra specie e credere anche negli angeli, nei diavoli e nella vita nell’aldilà.

Coloro che una volta credevano ai miti erano in gran parte ignoranti, ma ora i giovani hanno Internet. Possono fare le proprie ricerche e prendere una decisione.

Dice che la maggior parte delle guerre del mondo sono state iniziate per la religione, più di una ha detto che il loro Dio era quello giusto e che ti avrebbero combattuto per dimostrarlo.

Ora la chiesa passa ogni settimana i cestini per la raccolta, dice, e per cosa?

I sacerdoti, i vescovi e i papi a Roma non hanno mai svolto un onesto giorno di lavoro in tutta la loro vita, non come i contadini qui nel sud.

Il Vaticano ha troppi generali e pochi soldati semplici.

“Dai alla terra e lei ti restituisce qualcosa”, dice. «Ma non la chiesa. la chiesa prende solo”.

Siamo a tavola e ascolto entrambe le parti, padre e figlia, parlare di ciò in cui credono e di ciò che non credono.

Propongo di invitare a cena don Roberto, il sacerdote in visita dall’India.

Giovanni scuote la testa, mentre Mimma fa appello a sua madre in cucina.

Non so dire con quanta forza Giovani crede a ciò che predica, o se sta solo cercando di ottenere una risurrezione da Mimma.

A volte, quando inizia, si aggira scherzosamente su di lui, come per esigere una sorta di punizione, ma è tutto giocoso, il repertorio.

Dico che qualunque cosa creda, Mimma prega ancora per lui ogni notte.

Per Mimma, però, non è tutto un gioco. Si aggrappa alla sua fede.

«So benissimo che mio papà, quando mi vede tornare dalla messa o dalle prove di canto, mi prende in giro, ma solo per farmi arrabbiare», dice.

«E comunque non ci riesce mai perché, sorridendo, mi giro e come una ragazzina gli faccio la linguaccia».

Ama suo padre, entrambi i suoi genitori, e vuole solo che provino la gioia di credere.

Ma sa che il tempo è fugace, e quindi li accetta così come sono.

“Un giorno non ci saranno più e io soffro molto e piango molto”, dice. “Prego sempre Dio di farli stare con noi per sempre”.

E con quella preghiera, spera che il Signore stia ascoltando.
