POMARICO, Italy — On many evenings, after the heat of another summer day has finally waned, I stroll down to the center of town and watch my two young cousins play soccer.

Christian is 23 and his younger brother, Gabriel, is 19. They have varied skill sets and play different positions. Christian is a goalie, his brother a defenseman. 

They play on different squads, which sometimes practice on the field one after the other. Each stays to watch the other, hang out with friends. In Pomarico, there isn’t much more to do.

There are two soccer pitches here which. Like any town in Italy or across Europe, this place is madly passionate about the sport. 

While American kids have a choice of athletic pursuits, from baseball to football and basketball, Italians play only soccer.

“This is it,” Gabriel explains after I complement his arsenal of on-grass moves, the slights, fakes and subtle shifts. “This is all Italian kids do.”

Like the Catholic Church itself, soccer is a religion here. I’ve seen toddlers barely able to watch kick a soccer ball around a church courtyard in the old section of town.

Some 4.3 million Italians play soccer every year, comprising almost one-fifth the number of the number of adherents worldwide. Historians say some form of soccer has been played here since the time of the Roman Empire, but the game’s present form arrived in the 1880s, brought back from England by a merchant marine.

Today’s best soccer players are considered heroes, national icons. Every Italian boy dreams of joining the ranks of the most talented players.

Here in Pomarico, a regulation-sized field sits just outside town but most players practice here on a smaller, night-lighted pitch.

The miniature field is completely encased by netting so even the most errant moon shots are not sent into the surrounding stratosphere.

The space has the compressed feel of an Arena football field. But this setting, with its artificial turf, is not about the endless running required on regulation fields. 

It’s all about the strategy and footwork that makes soccer one of the world’s most beautiful games.

I recall watching my first practice not long after I arrive in town. I walk down a set of ancient stone steps, let myself in through the gate and take a seat alongside the action, on one of a set of chairs where players leave their backpacks, wallets and car keys.

What I see next is simply a revelation. 

It makes me feel old just to watch these young players bolt across the field, stopping and starting, always in control, in what is nothing less than a brilliant sports ballet.

And don’t even get me started on the antics of the soccer goalie.

Sometimes, in his effort to deflect a speeding-bullet shot, Christian moves like Elastic Man, a gymnast doing splits and rolls, all with those colorful oversized gloves that look like cartoon catchers mitts.

I have never been much of a soccer fan. 

Baseball and basketball are my must-watch sports back home. I don’t think I’ve ever watched any kind of league soccer match in my life. 

Every few years, I’ll tune into the World Cup contests, always rooting for the African underdogs to surprise one of the South American or European kingpins.

But with such wide TV camera angles, you can’t get close enough to really appreciate the moments of sheer magic performed during these games, the dazzling footwork that gives this game it’s heart-thrumming pace and excitement.

But here on this little netted pitch in a small southern Italian town, the players are so close I can almost reach out and touch them as they pass. I feel as though I am sitting court-side for an NBA game, or have box seats right behind baseball’s home plate.

On that first night, and for successive nights afterwards, I have seen the sport of soccer like never before. 

For a guy who too often trips over his own size-13 shoes, what these young players do with their feet is mind-numbing.

Mesmerizing. Such dexterity and fleet-footedness. 

These young players seem like creatures from another planet. 

Once they have the ball, they move their feet like a card sharp shuffles and works his deck. Often, the eyes, brain and reflexes just can’t move fast enough to keep up with him.

For the opposing player, that’s when trouble happens.

Composed of 26 bones, 33 joints and 100-plus muscles, tendons and ligaments, human feet are the very foundation to a well-rounded soccer player, and this is much easier to see when viewed close up.

But how do these players train their reflexes to move with such lightening quickness?

These contests resemble the pickup basketball scrums you might encounter in any urban park in any American city, where players work on individual moves, and practice fitting into the flow of a real regulation game.

And the comparison to basketball is spot-on.

Like any hot-shot guard might juke and fake, using the cross-over dribble, the sluice and juice, no-look pass or step-back jumper to confuse his opponent, soccer players employ the same fleet-of foot strategy.

Basketball players use the same extremity they use to lift a fork, tie their shoes, write their name, with hands that been trained for such intricate moves for eons.

The feet, however, have not. People have two left feet, never two left hands.

Basketball is more physical than soccer, which is much more about finesse and technique. Up this close, I can feel its keen strategy and cerebral tactics.

And all while the players are almost constantly in motion.

In a regulation game, a soccer player might cover nine miles, an exhausting feat that’s triple the 2.5 miles the fleetest hoops guard might run up and down the court.

In Brazil, another country crazy about its soccer, singer Jorge Ben wrote several odes to the nation’s greatest players, athletes who can move entire stadiums to their feet with their pulsing emotion and explosive moves.

He calls them Wonder Sons.

In the heat of an Italian summer evening, I see these young Italian men sweat and grimace until one drops to the field in exhaustion.

These games are all about control, with bursts of brilliance. Time and again, players turn on a burst of foot quickness to explode past a defender.

In this game, a player’s hands and arms are used only for balance and mostly remain by his side, as though mere observers.

But the rest of the body is in full play.

A teammate might pass the ball, which arrives to a fellow player perhaps a bit high.

No problem. 

The player uses his chest, head or shoulders to trap the ball and keep it under their control, making it drop to his feet like a dead weight. 

Then as bodies move all around him, he navigates his way out of tight pressure, executes a series of sharp cuts, dribbles and darts against a double team. 

Then a fake or step-over, a turn this way and that, the ball always under control, there at his feet. Finally, a quick change of direction, a sharp turn and a crack at the net.

Gooooooooaaalllllllllll!

The arsenal of any soccer’s moves depends not just on sudden and quick movements, but a field-vision to know when to pass or when to make your own move.

Under the control of a skilled player, the ball is fickle, elusive. It rarely goes where you think it’s going.

Those at soccer’s highest levels have made famous moves these young players work hard to emulate. Moves called the Roulette, Elastico, Hocus Pocus, Fake Pull Back, Rainbow, Ronaldo Chop, Inside Hook, Step Over, Maradonna Spin and Around the World.

Each is an exquisite solo performance, worthy of reverence.

There is a player on Gabriel’s team, older than the rest, wearing number nine and a graying beard. From a standstill, he bursts down the field, in a full run, the ball shifting between his feel, never losing rhythm.

It is brilliant ball control. For a brief moment, he seems to dictate the game single-handedly, fooling his opponent until a last-second pass creates a chance for one of the team’s strikers.

Each player possesses his own skill set. All have their moments of brilliance.

But I can’t take my eyes off him this one.

There’s also an opponent, a guy in a blue jersey, wearing number 11, who appears more lethal than most. Gabriel stays with him, often kicking the ball away as he makes his move.

Other times, he is simply too slithery. He twists and turns, his legs kicking high, crossing, moving, while the ball stays within his control.

Surrounded by opponents, he shoots a perfectly-time no look pass to a teammate for a quick and lethal goal. Undeterred, like an uninvited party guest, my cousin stays by his side whenever his opponent gets the ball.

When the teams break for a quick breather, Gabriel walks to the sideline for a quick guzzle of water.

“Number 11,” I tell him. “He’s dangerous. But you got the best of him.”

A brief smile flashes across his face. Then he’s back on the pitch for more action in this most elegant, beautiful game of wits and strategy.

This Wonder Son of a most wondrous game.

POMARICO GIORNALE: I Wonder Sons di un gioco meraviglioso

POMARICO, Italia — Molte sere, dopo che il caldo del giorno è finalmente calato, vado a passeggiare nel centro della città e guardo i miei due giovani cugini giocare a calcio.

Christian ha 23 anni e suo fratello minore, Gabriel, 19. Hanno abilità diverse e giocano posizioni diverse. Christian è un portiere, suo fratello un difensore.

Giocano in squadre diverse, che a volte si allenano sul campo una dopo l’altra. Ciascuno rimane a guardare l’altro.

Ci sono due campi da calcio a Pomarico che, come ogni paese d’Italia e d’Europa, è follemente appassionato di questo sport.

Mentre i bambini americani hanno una scelta di sport da mettere in borsa, dal baseball al calcio e al basket, gli italiani giocano solo a calcio.

“Questo è tutto”, spiega Gabriel dopo che ho completato il suo arsenale di insulti, falsi e mosse. “Questo è tutto ciò che fanno i bambini italiani.”

Proprio come la stessa Chiesa cattolica, qui il calcio è una religione. Ho visto bambini a malapena in grado di guardare calciare un pallone da calcio nel cortile di una chiesa nella parte vecchia della città.

Ogni anno giocano a calcio circa 4,3 milioni di italiani, quasi un quinto del numero di tifosi nel mondo. Gli storici affermano che una qualche forma di calcio è stata giocata qui sin dai tempi dell’Impero Romano, ma la forma attuale del gioco è arrivata nel 1880, portata dall’Inghilterra da una marina mercantile.

I migliori calciatori di oggi sono considerati eroi, icone nazionali. Ogni ragazzo italiano sogna di entrare nella schiera dei giocatori più talentuosi.

A Pomarico, un campo regolamentare si trova appena fuori città, ma la maggior parte dei giocatori si allena qui su un campo più piccolo e illuminato di notte.

Il campo in miniatura è completamente racchiuso da una rete, quindi anche i colpi lunari più errati non vengono inviati nella stratosfera circostante.

Il campo ha la sensazione compressa di un campo da calcio dell’Arena. Ma questa impostazione, con il suo tappeto erboso artificiale, non riguarda la corsa infinita richiesta sui campi regolamentari.

Riguarda la strategia e il gioco di gambe che rendono il calcio uno dei giochi più belli del mondo.

Ricordo di aver visto il mio primo allenamento non molto tempo dopo il mio arrivo in città. Scendo una serie di antichi gradini in pietra, entro dal cancello e mi siedo a bordo campo, sulle sedie dove i giocatori lasciano zaini, portafogli e chiavi della macchina.

Quello che vedo dopo è semplicemente una rivelazione.

Mi fa sentire vecchio solo guardare questi giovani giocatori sfrecciare attraverso il campo, fermandosi e iniziando, sempre in controllo, in quello che non è altro che un brillante balletto sportivo.

E non farmi nemmeno iniziare con le buffonate del portiere di calcio.

A volte, nel suo sforzo di deviare un colpo di proiettile in corsa, Christian si muove come un uomo fatto di elastico, un ginnasta che fa spaccate e rotoli, il tutto con quei guanti oversize colorati che sembrano guanti da cacciatore di cartoni animati.

Non sono mai stato un grande tifoso di calcio.

Il baseball e il basket sono i miei sport da non perdere a casa. Non credo di aver mai visto nessun tipo di partita di calcio in vita mia.

Ogni pochi anni, mi sintonizzerò sulle partite della Coppa del Mondo, tifando sempre per i perdenti africani per sorprendere uno dei boss sudamericani o europei.

Ma con angoli di ripresa così ampi, ti sembra di avvicinarti abbastanza da apprezzare davvero i momenti di pura magia eseguiti durante i giochi, il gioco di gambe abbagliante che conferisce a questo gioco il suo ritmo da batticuore e l’eccitazione.

Ma qui, su questo piccolo campo con rete in una piccola città del sud Italia, i giocatori sono così vicini che posso quasi allungare la mano e toccarli mentre passano. Mi sento come se fossi seduto a bordo campo per una partita della NBA, o avessi dei posti a sedere proprio dietro la casa base del baseball.

Quella prima notte, e per le notti successive, ho visto lo sport del calcio come non l’avevo mai visto prima.

Per un ragazzo che troppo spesso inciampa nelle sue scarpe numero 13, quello che fanno questi giovani giocatori con i loro piedi è sconvolgente.

Ipnotizzante. Tale destrezza e passo veloce.

Questi giovani giocatori sembrano creature di un altro pianeta.

Una volta che hanno la palla, muovono i piedi come una carta che mescola bruscamente e lavora il suo mazzo. Spesso gli occhi, il cervello e i riflessi non riescono a muoversi abbastanza velocemente per stargli dietro.

Per il giocatore avversario, è allora che si verificano problemi.

Costituiti da oltre 26 ossa, 33 articolazioni e oltre 100 muscoli, tendini e legamenti, i piedi sono le fondamenta di un giocatore di calcio a tutto tondo, e questo è molto più facile da vedere se visto da vicino.

Ma come fanno questi giocatori ad allenare i loro riflessi per muoversi con una rapidità così fulminea?

Queste gare assomigliano alle mischie di pallacanestro che potresti incontrare in qualsiasi parco urbano in qualsiasi città americana, dove i giocatori lavorano su mosse individuali e si esercitano a inserirsi nel flusso di un vero gioco regolamentare.

E il paragone con il basket è azzeccato.

Come qualsiasi guardia tiratrice potrebbe fare juke e fingere, usando il dribbling incrociato, la chiusa e il succo, il passaggio senza guardare o il saltatore all’indietro per confondere il suo avversario, i giocatori di calcio utilizzano la stessa strategia di piede veloce.

I giocatori di basket usano la stessa estremità che usano per sollevare una forchetta, allacciarsi le scarpe, scrivere il proprio nome, mani che sono state addestrate per eoni a movimenti così intricati.

I piedi, invece, no. Le persone hanno due piedi sinistri, mai due mani sinistre.

Il basket è più fisico del calcio, che è molto più finezza e tecnica. Da così vicino, posso sentire la sua acuta strategia e le sue tattiche cerebrali.

E tutto mentre i giocatori sono quasi costantemente in movimento.

In una partita regolamentare, un giocatore di calcio potrebbe percorrere nove miglia, un’impresa estenuante che è il triplo delle 2,5 miglia che la più veloce guardia del cerchio potrebbe correre su e giù per il campo.

In Brasile, un altro paese pazzo per il suo calcio, il cantante Jorge Ben For ha scritto diverse odi ai più grandi giocatori della nazione, che possono commuovere interi stadi con la loro emozione pulsante e le loro mosse esplosive.

Nel caldo di una sera d’estate italiana, vedo questi giovani italiani sudare e fare smorfie fino a quando alcuni cadono in campo esausti.

Questi giochi sono incentrati sul controllo, con esplosioni di brillantezza. Di volta in volta, i giocatori attivano una raffica di rapidità del piede per esplodere oltre un difensore.

In questo gioco, le mani e le braccia di un giocatore servono solo per l’equilibrio e per lo più rimangono al suo fianco, come se fossero semplici osservatori.

Ma il resto del corpo è in pieno gioco.

Un compagno di squadra potrebbe passare la palla, che arriva a un compagno magari un po’ alta.

Nessun problema.

Il giocatore usa il petto, la testa o le spalle per intrappolare la palla e tenerla sotto controllo, facendola cadere sui suoi piedi come un peso morto.

Quindi, mentre i corpi si muovono tutt’intorno a lui, si fa strada fuori dalla pressione, esegue una serie di tagli netti, dribbling e freccette contro una doppia squadra.

Poi una finta o un sorpasso, un giro di qua e di là, palla sempre sotto controllo, lì ai suoi piedi. Infine, un rapido cambio di direzione, una brusca virata e una fenditura a rete.

L’arsenale delle mosse di qualsiasi calcio dipende non solo da movimenti improvvisi e rapidi, ma da una visione del campo per sapere quando passare o quando fare la propria mossa.

Sotto il controllo di un giocatore esperto, la palla è volubile, sfuggente. Raramente va dove pensi che stia andando.

Quelli ai massimi livelli del calcio hanno fatto mosse famose che questi giovani giocatori faticano a emulare. Come Roulette, Elastico, Hocus Pocus, Fake Pull Back, Rainbow, Ronaldo Chop, Inside Hook, Step Over, Maradonna Spin e Around the World.

Ognuna è una squisita esibizione solista, degna di riverenza.

C’è un giocatore nella squadra di Gabriel, più vecchio degli altri, con il numero nove e la barba grigia. Da fermo, irrompe in campo, in una corsa completa, la palla che si sposta tra le sue sensazioni, senza mai perdere il ritmo.

È un controllo di palla brillante. Per un breve momento, sembra dettare il gioco da solo, ingannando il suo avversario fino a quando un passaggio all’ultimo secondo crea un’occasione per uno degli attaccanti della squadra.

Ogni giocatore possiede il proprio set di abilità. Tutti hanno i loro momenti di brillantezza.

C’è un avversario, un ragazzo in maglia blu, che indossa il numero 11, che sembra più letale della maggior parte. Gabriel rimane con lui, spesso calciando via la palla mentre fa la sua mossa.

Altre volte, è semplicemente troppo scivoloso. Si gira e gira, le sue gambe calciano in alto, si incrociano, si muovono, mentre la palla rimane sotto il suo controllo.

Quindi circondato da avversari, e tira un passaggio senza sguardo perfetto a un compagno di squadra per un gol rapido e letale.

Quando le squadre si fermano per una breve pausa, mio cugino va a bordo campo per un rapido sorso d’acqua.

“Numero 11”, gli dico. “È pericoloso. Ma hai avuto la meglio su di lui.

Un breve sorriso gli attraversa il volto. Poi torna in campo per un’altra azione in questo bellissimo ed elegante gioco di ingegno e strategia.
