POMARICO, Italy — The approach to my family research in this small town where my grandfather was born is straightforward.

Tell the story of Antonio Glionna, the one who left.

And tell the tale of the ancestors who didn’t, those who stayed.

On a humid morning in late August, I have come to find some of them.

In a shady grove of trees a mile outside of town, I arrive at Pomarico’s cemetery, and it is here that they await me. 

Some I have met in life during previous visits; others were gone before I ever set foot in Pomarico.

But now it is all the same. 

They are all together here.

I arrive with my cousin, Mike, who translates, and my cousin Bruno, who takes photographs. We pop out of the car like a news crew ready to report another story.

Waiting in the parking lot is my oldest surviving relative in Pomarico, my cousin Giovanni Glionna. 

Always smiling, his face reddened from years working under the sun, he is my tour guide to the stories of the past.

And it is fitting. He is 85.

He has his spot here already chosen.

My cousin’s grandfather, also named Giovanni, was the older brother of my own grandfather, Giacomo Antonio Glionna.

My grandfather left his homeland in 1906, along with his older sister, Margherita. Soon another sister followed.

But Giovanni, his brother, did not go. Neither did Antonio’s older sister, Angela.

Out of five siblings, three had gone, two stayed behind.

Of those, Angela never had family.

But Giovanni did. 

And all of the relatives here, those still alive and those long gone, are direct descendants of Giovanni, the oldest brother in my grandfather’s family.

In the United States, my family is widespread. My grandparents are buried together in a plot in rural Worcester, N.Y.

They lie not far from where my grandfather worked all of his life as a railroad laborer, and where my grandmother, Susannah, bore him eight children.

My parents were both cremated. A sister set their urns amid a memorial on rural property she owned in Ketchikan, Alaska, on the wooded shore of a blue waterway.

But she sold the place not too long ago, and did not leave word as to the whereabouts of our parents.

And so we wonder.

For my Italian relatives, I know where to look.

They are here.

My cousin, Giovanni, take me by the arm.

“Come,” he says. “I want to show you something.”

There are differences in the way the Italians bury the dead.

In America, cemeteries are usually vast meadows marked by granite headstones. The dead are buried underground.

Here in Italy, there is usually no room for such large swaths of land.

Instead, the Italians have created wall burials, mausoleums sometimes three levels high, always constructed out of valuable stone.

There are a few ground burials, but not many. Space is an issue, and a saying has developed among many, perhaps a rationale, that only the poor go underground.

We walk through an elaborate gate onto tree-shaded grounds that resemble a small college campus, with a central square surrounded by buildings. 

There are red-brick walkways to other areas, generations other buildings, as though this was a condominium complex, built in phases.

Some are newer, others seemingly ancient, with hand-scrawled information.

We speak in hushed vices, out of respect.

Pomarico used to bury its dead in mass graves beneath the main church in town.

In 1817, residents began plans to establish a cemetery outside town to better handle the dead, beyond the occasional foul blowing of the wind.

More than two decades later, in 1841, work finally began. These devout Catholic followers established a separate spot to bury unbaptized children, the unrepentant and those of other religions.

For the rest, they built a first vault, now old and decrepit, and eventually added others when the population grew.

But Pomarico is done building vaults.

The population is plummeting. Today, about 3,500 people live here, half the number of two decades ago.

Each year, an average of 40 people die and only 25 are born, an annual population loss of 15%.

As a result, many vaults now sit empty.

And the oldest burial building has become so old that many want to tear it town. Others insist it has become a historic landmark, and must be preserved.

Here, as with everywhere else, there are politics in both life, and in death.

Giovanni turns a corner and waves a hand, a signal that we have arrived.

These are vaults where my relatives await me.

Some of the town’s families can afford grand structures whose fronts are emblazoned with the clan’s last name. Others can only afford space in collective vaults, some exposed to the lightly-blowing wind and the birdcalls, other reached only inside darkened tunnels.

We pass a line of graves, most with flowers marking a family’s visit. Each include the date of birth and death and includes a picture taken of the deceased in life.

More recent deaths feature color photos. The older ones, some dating back to the 1940s, at the end of World War Two, are black-and-white.

Many are forlorn-looking widows dressed in black, their husbands perhaps languishing far from home, beneath the ground of some distant battlefield.

Angela Glionna is one of these.

Even though she never married and died in 1971, her picture is in black-and-white, her clothing black, her hair pulled back. She has matching black earrings.

In her picture, she looks like a Civil War widow, as though her life was lonely and hard.

I ask about Giovanni, Angela’s my grandfather’s older brother.

That’s when I learn about a peculiar Italian burial practice.

In Italy, and other places, death memorials do not last forever.

In the cemetery in Pomarico, the spaces are usually rented for 30 years. After that, well-off families can renew the rent, so to speak. 

Up to a point.

To make way for the most recent dead, the older deceased have been exhumed and their bones placed in an unmarked ossuary, a container in which the bones of the dead are kept. 

For generations, in Pomarico, these collective wells were not marked in the center square of the cemetery, other than with a stone slab covering the opening. 

For me, it seems a diminished fate.

A law finally ended the practice. Rather than an unmarked ossuary, the bones of the long-dead are often stored with other family members.

We look at the discontinued wells in the central square.

It is quiet. There is no birdsong.

This is where the elder Giovanni Glionna lies, my grandfather’s brother.

I ask Giovanni about this custom.

He shrugs.

Giovanni comes here each year on November 1, a national day to recognize the dead. Sometimes, when the mood strikes, he will drop by and pay a visit, by himself, always silently, rarely staying long.

His wife comes more regularly to visit her relatives, on their birthdays and other holidays. She kisses her fingertips and places them on the picture, a way to say farewell once again.

Giovanni does no such thing. He points to his chest.

This is where he keeps his memories of those he loved.

He keeps them close to his heart.

Not here.

The four of us walk the grounds, seeking out the graves of more than a half dozen relatives — aunts, uncles, cousins, even Giovanni’s younger brother, Vincenzo.

My cousin tells stories about their lives.

At Vincenzo’s grave, the stone marker bears the same picture that his wife, Irene, keeps behind the counter in a prominent spot in the market Vincenzo ran for decades, where she and one of their two sons now work.

Vincenzo was always smiling, always cheerful, before his sudden death in 2020.

He had this lovely little saying that he repeated, almost to himself, as though gauging the progress of his day.

A posto, he said. Tutto a posto.

Everything in its place.

Standing before the vault, I put my hand on Vincenzo’s picture and say the words softly to his surviving brother.

Tutto a posto.

For her part, Angela, while she never bore a family, worked hard all of her life. 

Each morning, she walked a few miles from her home in town to her land in the country, where she sewed woolen sweaters on an ancient wood contraption.

It seems like thankless, difficult work.

But for Giovanni, there is no somber, funeral tone to these tales.

His attitude is respectful, but more in the spirit of an Irish funeral, where the dead are celebrated for their lives life, not merely recognized in their final repose.

We pass the grave of one of Giovanni’s former coworkers in the local fire department.

He tells of the time they extinguished a fire at a local hotel and his colleague fell and became trapped inside a prickly cactus plant.

Oh, how the boys laughed.

Celebrated in life, not merely recognized in death.

Some stories are poignant.

We stop at the burial spot of Giovanni’s father, Domenico.

Born in 1909, he died in 1981, at the age of 72.

His black-and-white picture shows the gentle eyes his son now possesses, the prominent ears.

As the story goes, Domenico and his brother, Antonio, had ridden mules to collect water at a community well in some woods outside town.

Antonio turned for just a moment, and then noticed that his brother was gone. He soon found Domenico’s body near the water.

Antonio would live to the age of 96 before he died in 2008. The photo on his vault is in color. He wears a fashionable sweater, his hands held before him.

His resting place sits just a few spaces away from the older brother he could not save.

There is another story of Domenico’s death.

It is even more heartrending than the first.

Domenico once took his son, Giovanni, aside to tell him that he wanted to be buried not in a vault, but in a traditional western grave, underground.

Giovanni promised his father that he would see to his request.

But when Domenico finally died, Giovanni was overruled by his brothers and sisters.

The ground is where the poor are buried, they said.

Giovanni recalls crying, this son who could not deliver his father’s last wishes.

I ask whether Giovanni and his wife, Laura, have their spots chosen.

He takes me around a corner to two slabs of granite, side by side, that have not been marked by any finite dates of birth and death. 

There are no names, no pictures.

Just two numbers.

280 and 286.

These are the resting places, ready for their inhabitants.

Giovanni has paid a tariff of 3,000 Euros for the two vaults, for 30 years.

He sighs.

Like his own father before him, he would prefer an in-ground burial.

But again, there are family politics involved.

He knows his three daughters, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will not hear of such a thing.

Being buried in the ground is for the poor, they will say, not for our parents.

Still, he is content with his fate.

“Not matter what they tell me,” he says. “When I close my eyes, this is where I will go.”

And that place is here, next to his wife Laura, who fell him love with him when she was 16.

He will be close to his brother, Vincenzo. And his father, Domenico. And his uncles Michele and Antonio.

And, of course, Angela.

All of them together, the ones who stayed in this town where my grandfather was born.

Tutto a posto.

Everything in its place.

POMARICO GIORNALE: Il luogo dove me aspettandogliela i miei antenati

POMARICO, Italia — L’approccio alla mia ricerca familiare in questa piccola città dove è nato mio nonno è sempre stato semplice.

Racconta la storia di mio nonno, l’antenato che se ne andò.

E raccontare la storia dei parenti che non lo hanno fatto, di quelli che sono rimasti indietro.

In un’umida mattina di fine agosto sono venuto a trovarne alcuni.

In un boschetto ombroso a un miglio fuori città, arrivo al cimitero di Pomarico, ed è qui che mi aspettano.

Alcuni li ho incontrati nella vita durante le visite precedenti; altri se ne erano andati prima che io mettessi piede a Pomarico.

Ma ora è tutto uguale.

Sono tutti insieme qui.

Arrivo con il mio amico Mike, che traduce, e mio cugino Bruno, che fotografa.

Usciamo dall’auto come una troupe televisiva pronta a riferire un’altra storia.

Ad aspettarmi nel parcheggio c’è il mio parente più anziano sopravvissuto a Pomarico, mio ​​cugino Giovanni Glionna.

Sempre sorridente, con il volto arrossato dagli anni di lavoro sotto il sole, è la mia guida turistica tra le storie del passato.

Ed è appropriato. Ha 85 anni.

Ha già scelto il suo posto qui.

Il nonno di mio cugino, anche lui di nome Giovanni, era il fratello maggiore di mio nonno, Giacomo Antonio Glionna.

Mio nonno lasciò la sua terra natale nel 1906, insieme alla sorella maggiore Margherita. Presto seguì un’altra sorella.

Ma Giovanni, suo fratello, non è andato. Nemmeno la sorella maggiore di Antonio, Angela.

Tre se ne erano andati, due erano rimasti.

Di questi, Angela non si è mai sposata, non ha mai avuto famiglia.

Ma Giovanni lo ha fatto.

E tutti i parenti qui, quelli ancora vivi e quelli scomparsi da tempo, sono discendenti diretti di Giovanni, il fratello maggiore della famiglia di mio nonno.

Negli Stati Uniti la mia famiglia è molto diffusa. I miei nonni sono sepolti insieme in un terreno nella zona rurale di Worcester, New York.

Si trovano non lontano da dove mio nonno lavorò tutta la vita come operaio ferroviario e dove mia nonna Susannah gli diede otto figli.

I miei genitori furono entrambi cremati. Una sorella ha collocato le sue urne in mezzo a un monumento commemorativo in una proprietà rurale di sua proprietà a Ketchikan, in Alaska, sulla riva boscosa di un corso d’acqua blu.

Ma ha venduto la casa non molto tempo fa, e non ha lasciato parola su dove si trovassero i nostri genitori.

Ci sono differenze nel modo in cui gli italiani seppelliscono i morti.

In America, i cimiteri sono solitamente vasti prati contrassegnati da lapidi di granito. I morti vengono sepolti sottoterra.

Qui in Italia di solito non c’è spazio per porzioni di territorio così grandi.

Gli italiani hanno invece creato sepolture murarie, cripte a volte alte tre livelli, sempre costruite con pietre pregiate.

Ci sono alcune sepolture a terra, ma non molte. Lo spazio è un problema, e tra molti si è sviluppato un detto, forse una logica, secondo cui solo i poveri vanno sottoterra.

Attraversiamo un elaborato cancello su un terreno ombreggiato da alberi che ricorda un piccolo campus universitario, con una piazza centrale circondata da edifici.

Ci sono passerelle di mattoni rossi verso altre aree, generazioni di altri edifici, come se questo fosse un complesso condominiale, costruito in più fasi.

Alcuni sono più nuovi, altri sembrano antichi, con lavagne informative dipinte a mano.

Parliamo a voce bassa, per rispetto.

Pomarico seppelliva i suoi morti in fosse comuni sotto la chiesa principale del paese.

Nel 1817, i residenti iniziarono a progettare di istituire un cimitero fuori città per gestire meglio i morti, al di là degli occasionali soffi di vento.

Più di due decenni dopo, nel 1841, i lavori iniziarono finalmente. Questi devoti seguaci cattolici stabilirono un luogo separato per seppellire i bambini non battezzati, gli impenitenti e quelli di altre religioni.

Per il resto costruirono una prima cripta, ormai vecchia e decrepita, ed eventualmente ne aggiunsero altre quando la popolazione crebbe.

Ma Pomarico ha finito di costruire caveau.

La popolazione sta crollando. Oggi qui vivono circa 4.000 persone, la metà rispetto a vent’anni fa.

Ogni anno muoiono in media 40 persone e ne nascono solo 25, con una perdita annua di popolazione del 15%. Molte casseforti ora sono vuote.

E l’edificio funerario più antico è diventato così vecchio che molti vogliono demolirlo.

Altri sostengono che sia diventato un punto di riferimento storico e debba essere preservato.

Qui, come ovunque, c’è politica sia nella vita che nella morte.

Giovanni gira l’angolo e agita una mano, segnale che siamo arrivati.

Queste sono le volte dove mi aspettano i miei parenti.

Alcune famiglie della città possono permettersi grandi strutture le cui facciate sono decorate con il cognome del clan.

Altri possono permettersi lo spazio solo in cripte collettive, alcuni esposti al vento leggero e ai richiami degli uccelli, altri raggiunti solo all’interno di cripte buie.

Oltrepassiamo una fila di tombe, la maggior parte con fiori di plastica che segnano la visita di una famiglia.

Ciascuno include la data di nascita e di morte e include una foto scattata dal defunto in vita. Le morti più recenti presentano foto a colori.

Quelli più vecchi, alcuni risalenti agli anni Quaranta, alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, sono in bianco e nero.

Molte di loro erano vedove dall’aspetto disperato, vestite di nero, e i loro mariti forse languivano lontano da casa, sotto terra in qualche lontano campo di battaglia.

Angela Glionna è una di queste.

Anche se non si sposò mai e morì nel 1971, la sua foto è in bianco e nero, i suoi vestiti neri, i capelli raccolti.

Ha orecchini neri abbinati.

Nella sua foto, sembra una vedova della Guerra Civile, come se la sua vita fosse solitaria e dura.

Chiedo di Giovanni, Angela è la sorella maggiore di mio nonno.

È allora che vengo a conoscenza di una peculiare pratica di sepoltura italiana.

In Italia, e in altri luoghi, le memorie dei morti non durano per sempre.

Nel cimitero di Pomarico gli spazi vengono solitamente affittati per 30 anni. Successivamente, le famiglie benestanti possono, per così dire, rinnovare l’affitto.

Fino a un certo punto.

Per far posto ai morti più recenti, i defunti più anziani da anni vengono riesumati e le loro ossa collocate in un ossario non contrassegnato, un contenitore o una stanza in cui vengono conservate le ossa dei morti.

Per generazioni, a Pomarico, questi pozzi collettivi non erano segnalati nella piazza centrale del cimitero, se non con una lastra di pietra che ne copriva l’apertura.

Per me sembra un destino diminuito.

Una legge ha finalmente posto fine a questa pratica. Piuttosto che in un ossario anonimo, le ossa dei morti da tempo sono spesso conservate insieme ad altri membri della famiglia.

Osserviamo i pozzi fuori produzione nella piazza centrale.

È calmo. Non c’è il canto degli uccelli.

Qui giace il maggiore Giovanni Glionna, fratello di mio nonno.

Chiedo a Giovanni di questa usanza.

Alza le spalle.

Viene qui ogni anno il 1° novembre, giornata nazionale per riconoscere i morti.

A volte, quando l’umore lo colpisce, passa a fare una visita, da solo, sempre in silenzio, raramente rimanendo a lungo.

Sua moglie viene più regolarmente a trovare i suoi parenti, in occasione dei loro compleanni e di altre festività.

Si bacia i polpastrelli e li appoggia sulla foto, un modo per salutarsi ancora una volta.

Giovanni indica il suo petto.

Qui è dove conserva i ricordi di coloro che amava.

Li tiene vicini al suo cuore.

Non qui.

Tutti e quattro camminiamo per il parco, cercando le tombe di più di una mezza dozzina di parenti: zie, zii, cugini, persino il fratello minore di Giovanni, Vincenzo.

Mio cugino racconta storie delle loro vite.

Sulla tomba di Vincenzo, la lapide porta la stessa immagine che sua moglie, Irene, conserva in un posto di rilievo nel negozio che Vincenzo ha gestito per decenni, dove ora lavorano lei e uno dei loro due figli.

Vincenzo era sempre sorridente, sempre allegro, prima della sua morte improvvisa nel 2020.

Aveva questo detto adorabile che ripeteva, quasi a se stesso, come se valutasse l’andamento della sua giornata.

A posto, disse. Tutto a posto.

In piedi davanti al caveau, metto la mano sulla foto di Vincenzo e dico sottovoce le parole al fratello sopravvissuto.

Tutto a posto.

Da parte sua, Angela, pur non avendo mai messo su famiglia, ha lavorato duramente per tutta la vita.

Ogni mattina camminava per alcuni chilometri dalla sua casa in città alla sua terra in campagna, dove cuciva maglioni di lana su un antico congegno di legno.

Sembra un lavoro ingrato e difficile.

Ma per Giovanni non c’è alcun tono cupo e funebre in questi racconti.

Il suo atteggiamento è rispettoso, ma più nello spirito di un funerale irlandese, dove i morti vengono celebrati per la loro vita, non semplicemente riconosciuti nel loro riposo finale.

Oltrepassiamo la tomba di uno degli ex colleghi di Giovanni nei vigili del fuoco locali.

Racconta di come una volta hanno spento un incendio in un hotel e il suo collega è caduto ed è rimasto intrappolato in una pianta di cactus spinoso.

Oh, come ridevano i ragazzi.

Celebrato in vita, non semplicemente riconosciuto in morte.

Alcune storie sono toccanti.

Ci fermiamo al luogo di sepoltura del padre di Giovanni, Domenico.

Nato nel 1909, morì nel 1981, all’età di 72 anni.

La sua foto in bianco e nero mostra gli occhi gentili che suo figlio ora possiede e le orecchie prominenti.

Si racconta che Domenico, insieme al fratello Antonio, cavalcasse i muli per raccogliere l’acqua presso un pozzo comunitario in alcuni boschi fuori città.

Antonio si voltò solo un attimo e poi si accorse che suo fratello non c’era più. Presto trovò il corpo di Domenico vicino all’acqua.

Antonio vivrà fino all’età di 96 anni prima di morire nel 2008. La foto sulla sua volta è a colori. Indossa un maglione alla moda, tiene le mani davanti a sé.

Il suo luogo di riposo si trova a pochi spazi di distanza dal fratello maggiore che non è riuscito a salvare.

C’è un’altra storia della morte di Domenico.

È ancora più straziante del primo.

Domenico una volta prese da parte suo figlio Giovanni per dirgli che voleva essere sepolto non in una cripta, ma in una tradizionale tomba occidentale, sottoterra.

Giovanni promise al padre che avrebbe esaudito la sua richiesta.

Ma quando finalmente Domenico morì, Giovanni fu sopraffatto dai suoi fratelli e sorelle.

La terra è dove sono sepolti i poveri, dicevano.

Giovanni ricorda di aver pianto, questo figlio che non ha potuto esprimere le ultime volontà di suo padre.

Chiedo se Giovanni e sua moglie Laura hanno scelto i posti.

Mi porta dietro un angolo fino a due lastre di granito, una accanto all’altra, che non sono state segnate da alcuna data finita di nascita e morte.

Non ci sono nomi, né immagini.

Solo due numeri.

280 e 286.

Questi sono i luoghi di riposo, pronti per i loro abitanti.

Giovanni ha pagato per i due caveau una tariffa di 3.000 euro, per 30 anni.

Sospira.

Come suo padre prima di lui, preferirebbe una sepoltura interrata.

Ma ancora una volta sono coinvolte le politiche familiari.

Sa che le sue tre figlie, i suoi nipoti e pronipoti non ne sentiranno parlare.

Essere sepolti sotto terra è per i poveri, diranno, non per i nostri genitori.

Tuttavia, è soddisfatto del suo destino.

“Non importa quello che mi dicono”, dice. “Quando chiuderò gli occhi, è qui che andrò.”

E quel posto è qui, accanto alla moglie Laura, che se ne innamorò quando aveva 16 anni.

Sarà vicino al fratello Vincenzo. E suo padre, Domenico. E gli zii Michele e Antonio.

E, naturalmente, Angela.

Tutti insieme, quelli che sono rimasti in questo paese dove è nato mio nonno.

Tutto a posto.
