METAPONTO, Italy — Giuseppe Passarelli steps slowly through a grassy field in this scenic seaside town, approaching two lines of stone columns that stand in formation, like a row of ancient soldiers.

Nearly three thousand years ago this site, now known as Metapontum, featured a school founded by Pythagorus, the Greek philosopher whose principals influenced both Plato and Aristotle as well as the development of mathematics and Western rationale.

Long before before it fell into ruins, it was used as a Greek temple dedicated to the wife of the Zeus, the god of sky and thunder.

On a warm Sunday morning in early August, Passarelli tells me the story with intimate details, like he’s talking about his own extended family history.

Which, in a way, he is.

Impossibly thin, in his mid-40s, dressed in a sun hat, shorts and sneakers, he looks like just another weekend tourist.

But he is far from that. 

He’s not here for selfies or snapshots, but to better understand the influence of the ancient Greeks, and other foreign cultures, on today’s Southern Italy.

Passarelli is a scholar, an archeologist with a mind in two vastly different worlds. 

He often comes to this venerable place, and others like it, not just for his advanced studies, but in search of an emotional release valve. 

He prefers the ancient past to the hectic present. 

So when the tensions of modern society become too much, when then car horns blast too shrilly and people become less kind, Passarelli chooses the quiet company of historical figures like Pythagoras.

He does not see mere ruins here, but a proud and still-flourishing former culture that has deeply influenced our modern world.

“The south has had Roman, Byzantine, Arab, French and Spanish occupations,” he says on a stroll around Metapontum. “Everyone has left customs and traditions, but to me Greek culture is the most fascinating.”

Passarelli lives in Pomarico, the town where my grandfather was born.

I met him one night at a local pizzeria run by one of my cousins, and he offered to show me the ancient history that exists right here, beneath our feet, in the same ground where my extended Italian family has its own roots.

Such historical treasures are found across Basilicata, he explains, Italy’s poor southern province, and not just along the storied tourist-trodden stone pathways of nearby Pompeii.

In the coming days, Passarelli will become a knowing guide for our little group of journalists: Bruno taking photographs, Mike translating the interviews, and my pen flashing across the pages of my notebook.

He explains how the Greeks brought the early alphabet and plant-based medicines still used by Southern Italians. Many phrases in Pomarico’s ancient dialect, he says, have their roots in Greek words.

Those ancient ships from Athens also brought ideas on the physical layout of cities and towns and influenced the way modern Italians bury the dead, with ornate funeral rites and the wearing of black, a mode of dress still seen across the region.

But this ancient past is much closer to Pomarico than I ever would have guessed.

On a desolate hilltop a few miles from the present-day town lies the settlement of Vecchio Pomarico, or Old Pomarico, which dates back thousands of years and features numerous architectural and cultural influences from the ancient Greeks.

Among only a handful of ancient indigenous sites of its kind, Vecchio Pomarico is a main reason why Giuseppe Passarelli became an archeologist in the first place.

He was just a boy, eight years old, working alongside his two brothers and other local students at an excavation site on a lonely hilltop plateau not far from his father’s farm.

He realizes now just how lucky he was.

Leading the dig was famed archeologist Marcella Barra Bagnasco, from the University of Turin, who came here after aerial photographs suggested something ancient lay beneath the rocky farm field.

Over the course of his years-long project Bagnesco’s team found traces of a long- bygone world: from black-glazed terra cotta pottery including jugs, cups and plates decorated with ornate mythical figures. They found evidence of the transportation of ancient cereals, wine and oil, as well as tools used in iron and carpentry word.

Much of it dates back as early as 600 B.C. 

The boy was spellbound. 

He discovered that his ancient relatives had traded with, and learned from, early Greek settlers here, a relationship that transformed their world.

The young Passarelli had his own personal connection to the dig.

His family own the land where the archeologists worked.

Over long summer days under a relentless Southern Italian sun, he was exposed to the careful process of using small tools and brushes to safely uncover these treasures from the rocky deep.

“In those years,” he says, smiling, “I didn’t understand this world. I didn’t know my hometown had this ancient history behind it.”

But the experience left its mark. 

As he grew older, he read everything he could about archeology, especially the findings of cultural influences right near his hometown. 

As a young scholar-to-be, he educated himself.

“Old Pomarico was my fist dig because it was so close to home,” he says. “But it opened up a new world for me.”

But like with any archeologic dig, the results revealed themselves slowly. 

By the time he was ready for college, a tiny alarm went off deep inside his psyche: It was time to follow his true passion.

Passarelli first attended a university in nearby Matera, studying Greek and Roman archaeology as he supported himself by working as a chef and waiter.

He continued his studies at a university in Potenza, another city in Basilicata, and in 2017 received his master’s degree in archeology. 

All the while, his parents supported his dream.

Since then, he has worked on numerous archeological projects with well-known Italian experts such as Professor Massimo Osanna, a former chief archeologist at such famous site as Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Passarelli has worked with scholars from the U.S, Canada and across Europe.

The former boy who used his first brush and tiny shovel at an archeological site just outside his hometown is now a recognized local authority on the history of his own land.

“Greek culture has always fascinated me because it represents for us a point of reference for everything, at least for southern Italy,” he says, “including culture, traditions, export of the alphabet and other models of modern life.”

We arrive in Metaponto in the late morning, along a rural road busy with traffic bound for local beaches. The town itself is located just 15 miles from Pomarico.

Passarelli has a few Greek artifacts that he wants to show us at the National Archeological Museum located here.

But not so fast. 

The place is deserted, while the beach just down the road is full of tanning bodies.

The museum is closed for the indefinite future. 

We look through the gates to see cranes and construction webbing. The closure will be a common theme of the day; we soon find another burial site fenced off and neglected.

Passarelli shakes his head.

“Here we are in southern Italy, surrounded by history, but not everyone cares,” he says. “Usually you see more foreign travelers at these sites than local residents.”

My friend Mike, who is our driver for the day, thinks he understands why: Local residents near any popular tourist site rarely visit. They know they can come anytime, but many never do. “It’s like the Statue of Liberty,” says Mike, who lived in Brooklyn for 20 years.

“It’s right in New York City’s backyard, but many people never go there.”

Still, Mike is critical of his own government for not spending more energy to show Italy’s cultural heritage to the rest of the world. Many sites sit empty because there isn’t the funding or the willpower to continue excavations.

“In England, many archeologists engage in crowd-funding, soliciting donations from the public to finance their projects,” he says. “Why couldn’t Italy do something like that?”

I ask if Italians would be interested enough to open their wallets.

“Boh,” Mike says, an Italian phrase for “I have no clue.”

As we walk in one historical park, Passarelli tells me about more recent history, including the story of an infamous brigand, a group of mercenary foot soldiers who protected the poor across southern Italy centuries ago.

Michele Glionna was captured by northern troops after Italy’s reunification and spent decades in prison, where he was given the nickname meapan, for his habit of asking for more prison bread.

He died in 1938, and he may be one of my relatives.

I have a running joke here in Pomarico that I have a cousin on every corner.

Pietro Varuolo, an historian here, tells me that in the year 1715, the mayor of Pomarico was named Giovanni Glionna, and he was most definitely a relative of mine.

As the Italian director Sergio Leone might say, my history here involves the good, the bad and the ugly.

(With me, of course, being the ugly.)

And, talk about ugly, historic sites across Basilicata are forever under threat from thieves and vandals, including one group that under the cover of dark, rumbled onto a site to dig up valuable stonework.

At one point, we tour the ruins of a former Greek ekklesiasterion, or public meeting place for debates. The circular stone seating area has been worn away by time, but there remains the vestiges of a large round tablet.

Passarelli explains how the Greeks brought to Italy the concept of the round table, which signifies a democratic meeting where all are treated the same.

For me, it reminds me of family tables across Italy, many of them round, which signifies that when it comes to eating, everyone is welcome and everyone is equal.

The following morning, Mike, Bruno and I trudge up a steep, furrowed road that seems to lead forever upward, into Pomarico’s ancient past.

At the top, with views for many miles in all directions, sits a large flat plateau which now serves as a local wheat field, rutted with deep tractor tracks.

We have arrived in Vecchio Pomarico.

In the distance, we can see present-day Pomarico, which sits on the crown of a nearby hill, its whitewashed buildings glimmering, diamond-like, in the summer sun.

Passarelli cannot accompany us on this day, but Mike and Bruno are avid students of local history, so I am not without counsel. 

We spread out onto the rocky terrain, scouting for shards of pottery and other signs of the ancient indigenous settlement whose culture and architecture where influenced by trading with Greek shippers who arrived in Metaponto.

In his subsequent book on his dig, the archeologist Bagnasco writes of a once-thriving community with a system of roadways, commerce, government and even tombs for the dead. The community was surrounded by a rock foundation for protection and sentries could spot ships arriving in the distant Ionian Sea.

Without spears or guns, the ancients defended themselves by hurling large rocks at invaders who tried to make their way up the steep slopes to the hilltop fortress.

Bagnasco also describes mule tracks into the nearby Basento Valley basin to other communities, suggesting that Vecchio Pomarico was the center of collection of nearby communities, a settlement that “would have exercised a central and guiding role with respect to the surrounding area.”

Wow, I think as I wander the field, my ancestors were actually players.

Kingpins. 

So much for the modern version, a sleepy Southern Italian overlooked by most tourists.

I ask why such an important site isn’t better protected by the Italian government. A slender public path leading around the site, kept up by local officials, sits in ruins.

“There just isn’t the money or the willpower to protect his area,” Mike sighs.

Mike and Bruno find small pieces of pottery, parts of wine or water jugs, perhaps. Bruno’s phone never stops ringing; he has good cellular reception this high up.

Mike says the architectural pickings are better after the local farm family plows the fields each year, uncovering other secrets from the past.

“Imagine what we’d find if we had a geiger counter up here,”he says.

He pauses, saying it’s illegal for us to remove anything of value. Not because of any cultural currency the item might possess, but the owners must first be paid a fee.

Suddenly, Southern Italy doesn’t seem a very good steward of its ancient history.

We spot several colorful shotgun shells that litter the land.

Bruno suggests that they might have been left behind by hunters who come here in search of wild possums and porcupines they use to make sausage.

“Possum sausage is good,” Mike suggests, “even better than the pork kind.”

We sit at a table inside Pomarico’s historical office, located in an 18th Century ducal palace, in a row that once served as a stable.

We’ve located the book on Vecchio Pomarico, written by archeologist Marcella Barra Bagnasco, which sits before us in two volumes.

For Passarelli, it’s a historical bible of sorts, a tome that solves many of the mysteries of his ancient ancestors who once peopled this land.

He flips through the 25-year-old research, at photos of colorful vases and deserted tombs. He calls the settlement a “singular case” of an indigenous community borrowing ideas from the travelers who landed on its shores.

He explains why many mythical scenes on ancient pottery contain naked young men. Apparently, it was a celebration of the human male form, like the young Italians in swimsuits on the shores of Metaponto not far away.

I ask him about the biggest and most important influence the Greeks left to modern Italy, on top of language and infrastructure.

“It’s how we bury our dead,” he says.

The Greeks, as it turned out, bought the idea of rituals performed for the deceased at their own homes, which were shrouded by a black banner to announce that death rites were in progress.

Elderly women, all dressed in black, called “mourners,” wept and beat their chests in agony over the personal loss. They chanted and told stories of the dead person when he or she had walked among them. 

Friends and family often brought hot food to be consumed during the long ceremony. In today’s Basilicata, the tradition continues.

It all began to make sense.

I remember my boyhood, during the early 1970s, when at my grandmother’s funeral, my distraught grandfather tried to throw himself into the grave, along with the casket, so heavy was his sense of loss.

In numerous trips to Pomarico, I have seen the widows who wear black, sometimes for the rest of their lives, after their husbands die.

This, then, was where it all started.

But Passarelli then tells me of other burial customs brought by the Greeks, which include placing personal artifacts inside the grave vault for use in the afterlife.

Strangest of all was the practice of putting a coin in the mouth of the dead, for them to use during their passage from one life to the next.

“Well, that one was no doubt dropped a long time ago,” I suggest.

Passarelli shakes his head. 

Coins were used at burials as late as a century ago, in the late 1800s, when my grandfather was a boy.

Later, I stand in the outdoor courtyard and shake hands with my historical tour guide. 

In fact, Passarelli is now looking for employment in local historical museums.

I’d take his tour any day.

METAPONTO, Italia — Giuseppe Passarelli cammina lentamente attraverso un campo erboso in questa pittoresca cittadina di mare, avvicinandosi a due file di colonne di pietra che stanno in formazione, come una fila di antichi soldati.

Quasi tremila anni fa questo sito, ora noto come Metaponto, ospitava una scuola fondata da Pitagora, il filosofo greco i cui presidi influenzarono sia Platone che Aristotele e lo sviluppo della matematica e della razionalità occidentale.

Molto prima che cadesse in rovina, era utilizzato come tempio greco dedicato alla moglie di Zeus, il dio del cielo e del tuono.

In una calda domenica mattina di inizio agosto, Passarelli mi racconta la storia.

Incredibilmente magro, sulla quarantina, vestito con un cappello da sole, pantaloncini e scarpe da ginnastica, sembra solo un altro turista del fine settimana.

Ma lui è lontano da questo.

Non è qui per selfie o istantanee, ma per comprendere meglio l’influenza degli antichi greci, e di altre culture straniere, sull’Italia meridionale di oggi.

Passarelli è uno studioso, un archeologo, un uomo con una mente in due mondi molto diversi.

Viene spesso in questo luogo venerabile, e altri simili, non solo per i suoi studi avanzati, ma alla ricerca di una valvola di sfogo emotivo.

Preferisce il passato antico al presente.

Così quando le tensioni della società moderna diventano eccessive, quando poi i clacson delle auto suonano troppo striduli e le persone diventano meno gentili, Passarelli sceglie la tranquilla compagnia di personaggi storici come Pitagora.

Qui non vede semplici rovine, ma una cultura precedente orgogliosa e ancora fiorente che ha profondamente influenzato il nostro mondo moderno.

“Il sud ha avuto occupazioni romane, bizantine, arabe, francesi e spagnole”, dice passeggiando per Metaponto. “Tutti hanno lasciato usanze e tradizioni, ma per me la cultura greca è la più affascinante.”

Passarelli vive a Pomarico, il paese dove è nato mio nonno.

L’ho incontrato una sera in una pizzeria locale gestita da uno dei miei cugini, e si è offerto di mostrarmi la storia antica che esiste proprio qui, sotto i nostri piedi, nello stesso terreno in cui la mia famiglia allargata italiana ha le sue radici.

Tali tesori storici si trovano in tutta la Basilicata, spiega, la povera provincia meridionale italiana, e non solo lungo i leggendari sentieri di pietra calpestati dai turisti della vicina Pompei.

Nei prossimi giorni Passarelli diventerà una guida esperta per il nostro gruppetto di giornalisti: Bruno che fotografa, Mike che traduce le interviste e la mia penna che scorre veloce sulle pagine del mio taccuino.

Spiega come i greci abbiano portato il primo alfabeto e le medicine a base vegetale ancora utilizzate dagli italiani del sud. Molte frasi nell’antico dialetto di Pomarico, dice, hanno le loro radici in parole greche.

Quelle antiche navi di Atene portarono anche idee sulla disposizione fisica di città e paesi e influenzarono il modo in cui gli italiani moderni seppelliscono i morti, con riti funebri decorati e l’uso del nero, un modo di vestire ancora visto in tutta la nazione.

Ma questo antico passato è molto più vicino a Pomarico di quanto avrei mai immaginato.

Su una collina desolata a poche miglia dall’attuale città si trova l’insediamento di Vecchio Pomarico, o Old Pomarico, che risale a migliaia di anni e presenta numerose influenze architettoniche e culturali dagli antichi greci.

Tra solo una manciata di antichi siti indigeni del suo genere, Vecchio Pomarico è uno dei motivi principali per cui Giuseppe Passarelli divenne in primo luogo un archeologo.

Era solo un ragazzo di otto anni che lavorava insieme ai suoi due fratelli e ad altri studenti locali in un sito di scavi su un altopiano solitario in cima a una collina non lontano dalla fattoria di suo padre.

Ora si rende conto di quanto sia stato fortunato.
A guidare gli scavi è stata la famosa archeologa Marcella Barra Bagnasco, dell’Università di Torino, che è venuta qui dopo che le fotografie aeree hanno suggerito che qualcosa di antico giaceva sotto il campo roccioso della fattoria.

Nel corso del suo progetto durato anni, il team di Bagnesco ha trovato tracce di un mondo ormai lontano: dalle ceramiche in terracotta smaltata di nero tra cui brocche, tazze e piatti decorati con figure mitiche ornate.

Sono state rinvenute testimonianze del trasporto di antichi cereali, vino e olio, nonché strumenti usati in ferro e parola di falegnameria.

Gran parte di esso risale al 600 a.C.
Il ragazzo era incantato.

Ha scoperto che i suoi antichi parenti avevano commerciato e imparato dai primi coloni greci qui, una relazione che ha trasformato il loro mondo.

Il giovane Passarelli aveva un legame personale con lo scavo.

La sua famiglia possiede la terra dove lavoravano gli archeologi.

Nelle lunghe giornate estive sotto un implacabile sole del sud Italia, è stato esposto all’attento processo di utilizzo di piccoli strumenti e pennelli per scoprire in sicurezza questi tesori dalle profondità rocciose.

“In quegli anni”, dice sorridendo, “non capivo questo mondo. Non sapevo che la mia città natale avesse alle spalle questa storia antica”.

Ma l’esperienza ha lasciato il segno.

Crescendo, ha letto tutto ciò che poteva sull’archeologia, in particolare i ritrovamenti di influenze culturali proprio vicino alla sua città natale.

Da giovane studioso, si è formato da solo.

“Il vecchio Pomarico è stato il mio primo scavo perché era così vicino a casa”, dice. “Ma mi ha aperto un nuovo mondo.”

Ma come con qualsiasi scavo archeologico, i risultati si sono rivelati lentamente.

Quando fu pronto per il college, un piccolo allarme scattò nel profondo della sua psiche: era ora di seguire la sua vera passione.

Passarelli ha frequentato per la prima volta un’università nella vicina Matera, studiando archeologia greca e romana mentre si manteneva lavorando come cuoco e cameriere.

Prosegue gli studi presso l’università di Potenza, altra città della Basilicata, e nel 2017 consegue la laurea magistrale in archeologia.

Nel frattempo, i suoi genitori hanno sostenuto il suo sogno.

Da allora, ha lavorato a numerosi progetti archeologici con noti esperti italiani come il professor Massimo Osanna, ex capo archeologo di siti famosi come Pompei ed Ercolano.

Passarelli ha lavorato con studiosi degli Stati Uniti, del Canada e di tutta Europa.

L’ex ragazzo che ha usato il suo primo pennello e la sua piccola pala in un sito archeologico appena fuori dalla sua città natale è ora un’autorità locale riconosciuta nella storia della sua stessa terra.

“La cultura greca mi ha sempre affascinato perché rappresenta per noi un punto di riferimento per tutto, almeno per il sud Italia”, dice, “compresa la cultura, le tradizioni, l’esportazione dell’alfabeto e altri modelli di vita moderna”.

Arriviamo a Metaponto in tarda mattinata, percorrendo una strada rurale trafficata e diretta alle spiagge locali. La città stessa si trova a soli 15 miglia da Pomarico.

Passarelli ha alcuni reperti greci che vuole mostrarci al Museo Archeologico Nazionale che si trova qui.

Ma non così in fretta.

Il posto è deserto, mentre la spiaggia in fondo alla strada è piena di corpi abbronzati.

Il museo è chiuso per un futuro indefinito.
Guardiamo attraverso i cancelli per vedere le gru e le cinghie da costruzione. La chiusura sarà un tema comune della giornata; presto troviamo un altro luogo di sepoltura recintato e trascurato.

Passarelli scuote la testa.

“Qui siamo nel sud Italia, circondati dalla storia, ma non a tutti importa”, dice.

“Di solito vedi più viaggiatori stranieri in questi siti rispetto ai residenti locali.”

Il mio amico Mike, che è il nostro autista per la giornata, pensa di capire perché: i residenti locali vicino a qualsiasi popolare sito turistico visitano raramente.

Sanno che possono venire in qualsiasi momento, ma molti non lo fanno mai. “È come la Statua della Libertà”, dice Mike, che ha vissuto a Brooklyn per 20 anni.

“È proprio nel cortile di New York City, ma molte persone non ci vanno mai.”

Tuttavia, Mike è critico nei confronti del proprio governo per non aver speso più energie per mostrare il patrimonio culturale italiano al resto del mondo. Molti siti rimangono vuoti perché non ci sono i fondi o la forza di volontà per continuare gli scavi.

“In Inghilterra, molti archeologi si impegnano nel crowdfunding, sollecitando donazioni dal pubblico per finanziare i loro progetti”, afferma.

“Perché l’Italia non potrebbe fare qualcosa del genere?”
Chiedo se gli italiani sarebbero abbastanza interessati da aprire il portafogli.

“Boh”, dice Mike, una frase italiana per “non ne ho idea”.

Mentre camminiamo in un parco storico, Passarelli mi racconta la storia più recente, inclusa la storia di un famigerato brigante, un gruppo di fanti mercenari che secoli fa proteggeva i poveri in tutto il sud Italia.

Michele Glionna fu catturato dalle truppe del nord dopo la riunificazione d’Italia e trascorse decenni in prigione, dove gli fu dato il soprannome di meapan, per la sua abitudine di chiedere più pane della prigione.

Morì nel 1938 e potrebbe essere uno dei miei parenti.

Ho una battuta ricorrente qui a Pomarico che ho un cugino ad ogni angolo.

Pietro Varuolo, qui storico, mi dice che nell’anno 1715 il podestà di Pomarico si chiamava Giovanni Glionna, ed era sicuramente un mio parente.

Come direbbe il regista italiano Sergio Leone, la mia storia qui coinvolge il buono, il brutto e il cattivo.

(Con me, ovviamente, essendo il brutto.)

E, parlare di brutti siti storici in tutta la Basilicata sono per sempre minacciati da ladri e vandali, incluso un gruppo che sotto la copertura dell’oscurità, si è precipitato su un sito per scavare pietre preziose.

Ad un certo punto, visitiamo le rovine di un ex ekklesiasterion greco, o luogo di incontro pubblico per dibattiti.

L’area salotto circolare in pietra è stata consumata dal tempo, ma rimangono le vestigia di una grande tavoletta rotonda.

Passarelli spiega come i greci abbiano portato in Italia il concetto di tavola rotonda, che significa incontro democratico dove tutti sono trattati allo stesso modo.

Per me, mi ricorda le tavole di famiglia in tutta Italia, molte delle quali rotonde, il che significa che quando si tratta di mangiare tutti sono i benvenuti e tutti sono uguali.

La mattina seguente, Mike, Bruno ed io arranchiamo su una strada ripida e solcata che sembra condurre per sempre verso l’alto, nell’antico passato di Pomarico.

In cima, con vista per molti chilometri in tutte le direzioni, si trova un grande altopiano pianeggiante che ora funge da campo di grano locale, solcato da profonde tracce di trattori.

Siamo arrivati ​​a Vecchio Pomarico.

In lontananza si scorge l’odierna Pomarico, che si erge sulla sommità di un colle vicino, con i suoi edifici imbiancati che luccicano, come diamanti, al sole estivo.

Passarelli non può accompagnarci in questo giorno, ma Mike e Bruno sono avidi studiosi di storia locale, quindi non sono privo di consigli.

Ci siamo sparsi sul terreno roccioso, alla ricerca di frammenti di ceramica e altri segni dell’antico insediamento indigeno la cui cultura e architettura sono state influenzate dal commercio con i caricatori greci che arrivavano a Metaponto.

Nel suo successivo libro sui suoi scavi, l’archeologo Bagnasco scrive di una comunità un tempo fiorente con un sistema di strade, commerci, governo e persino tombe per i morti.

La comunità era circondata da una fondazione rocciosa per protezione e le sentinelle potevano avvistare le navi che arrivavano nel lontano Mar Ionio.

Senza lance né pistole, gli antichi si difendevano scagliando grosse pietre contro gli invasori che cercavano di farsi strada lungo i ripidi pendii fino alla fortezza in cima alla collina.

Bagnasco descrive anche ad altre comunità le mulattiere nel vicino bacino della Val Basento, suggerendo che Vecchio Pomarico fosse il centro di raccolta delle comunità vicine, un insediamento che “avrebbe esercitato un ruolo centrale e di guida rispetto al territorio circostante”.

Questo per quanto riguarda la versione moderna, un sonnolento sud italiano trascurato dalla maggior parte dei turisti.
Chiedo perché un sito così importante non sia protetto meglio dal governo italiano.

Abbiamo individuato il libro sul Vecchio Pomarico, scritto dall’archeologa Marcella Barra Bagnasco, che ci sta davanti in due volumi.

Per Passarelli è una sorta di bibbia storica, un tomo che risolve molti dei misteri dei suoi antichi antenati che un tempo popolavano questa terra.

Sfoglia la ricerca di 25 anni, le foto di vasi colorati e tombe deserte. Definisce l’insediamento un “caso singolare” di una comunità indigena che prende in prestito idee dai viaggiatori che sono sbarcati sulle sue coste.

Spiega perché molte scene mitiche su ceramiche antiche contengono giovani uomini nudi.

Apparentemente, era una celebrazione della forma umana maschile, come i giovani italiani in costume da bagno sulle rive di Metaponto non lontano.

La moneta veniva usata nelle sepolture fino a un secolo fa, all’inizio del 1900, quando mio nonno era un ragazzo qui.
