POMARICO, Italy — My days are numbered here in the little Southern Italian village where my grandfather was born.

The hot summer weather has broken and cooler breezes will soon embrace these cobblestone streets.

You can feel them in the historic district where castle remnants and old churches sit silently on the hilltop, deserted but not forgotten, still holding their secrets. 

Autumn is on the horizon, school will soon start, and the gaggles of teenagers who aimlessly wander the streets at night will again have something to do.

I will be leaving soon.

I am not ready to go, not quite. 

There is still much work to do in my efforts to capture the rhythms of this place. There are more people to meet, more stories to tell.

I don’t feel as though I have spent enough time with my cousin, Giovanni.

He’s known by a few names here. 

Ciupuddone. Big Onion.

Our family nickname.

Il Biondo. White-haired.

Because he looks like the comedian Johnny Carson in his day.

For me, he signifies what family means here in Southern Italy, or anywhere else.

For decades, he worked two jobs, both as a firefighter and tending to his family plot of land in the countryside.

He raised three daughters, borrowing money to build a house in town. When it’s time, everything he owns will be divided between his remaining family.

He’s a great grandfather now.

Time passes slowly, even in this small town, but still it passes.

He cannot escape that. And neither can I.

Slowly, with help from so many, I have pieced together a picture of my grandfather, Giacomo Antonio Glionna, who as born here in 1888 and at age 18 left for America aboard a steamship in 1906.

There are still other puzzle pieces to find, more research to do.

But there is no more time.

In the coming weeks, I will publish other stories from my sojourn here, recollections that I have decided to hold on to for awhile, to let them age. 

I will read them again to ensure I have not been too harsh in my judgment, or too heaping in my praise.

But those will have to wait.

For now, it’s time to go.

On Sunday morning, Mike and Bruno will make the 90-minute drive to Bari so I can catch a fast train back to Rome.

Together, we three.

It is fitting.

We have been a journalistic team, driving the backroads of Basilicata, finding new places and people for me to write about, cementing our friendship along the way.

After I meet Bruno, a big boyish bear of a man, my cousin Giovanni tells me that we are related in some distant way — one great-grandfather of this clan married into that family — all of it so many years ago that it hardly makes a difference now.

But it does in Pomarico.

Family is family, no matter how distant.

All summer, I write about my cousin Bruno and my friend, Mike, who usually drives the car and always translates my interviews.

He also keeps our excursions on schedule when Bruno, friendly Bruno, threatens to take us on some tangent, some sudden new direction. He’ll meet somebody new or try to drag me into some widow’s home to sample her homemade pasta or cookies or wine.

Mike quietly resists. Like a chaperone at a junior high school dance, he rounds us up.

I start calling Mike Il Duce in that way, because for all his faults, Mussolini made Italy’s train run on time.

I meet Mike days after I arrive in town. 

I walk up a hill in the historic district, laden with grocery bags, and discover a slender, grey-haired man with glasses waiting outside my apartment.

A cousin has told him that I am here, this big goofy American with limited Italian skills.

And so Mike reaches out. To help me better fathom this place and its language.

“Are you John?” he asks.

He doesn’t have to ask twice. 

His English is music to my ears. 

We connect like two boys at summer camp.

I think Mike gets a kick out of guiding my efforts to learn about a place where he was born and grew up.

It brings out the tour guide that exists deep inside him.

He spent 20 years in Brooklyn, so he speaks three languages: English, Italian and the local Pomarican dialect. All three come in handy this summer.

Then something strange happens.

A few weeks ago, Mike and I are visiting with a cousin of mine on his farm, talking about his genealogical research into our family.

My cousin names this distant relative and that one.

Mike turns to me and says softly, as he always does, “I think we’re related.”

As with Bruno, we’re aging fruit on distant branches of the same tree.

But the same tree nonetheless.

Family.

Do this make me feel any closer to Mike?

Not really.

We were friends first, distant relatives second.

But it just proves a point about this little hill town where my grandfather was born.

The world really is small.

And Pomarico is even smaller.

I sit inside the mayor’s office and, as a parting question, Francesco Mancini asks me to name some things I’ll remember about Pomarico.

I answer right away. I have been thinking — and  writing — about this all summer.

I’ll remember Pomarico for its music, the pigeons that coo just outside my window, the clanging of the church bells that mark each passing hour, the way men shout at one another on the street in a wordless, guttural way.

Ayooh! Ayeh! Ayah! Owwww!

And how can I forget the cars that slow on the street as I walk, with their drivers shouting out in dialect my family nickname, a call of recognition.

Ciupuddone!

And I’ll hear the 1980s beat of the band Depeche Mode and see my friend Maggie turning up the speakers on her car, lost in the music. Modern Maggie, always dressed in black.

I’ll also remember Pomarico for its silence, the evenings I walk alone through the warren of alleyways on the hill of the old town, where the only sound is the slinking away of the street cats.

And I’ll remember Pomarico for its simplicity, the way the old men sit on benches scattered around the town. 

Like crows on a wire, some are sweet and silent, others crusty and brusque. 

They all have a right to be exactly how they want to be. 

All their lives, they’ve worked hard as farmers, most of them, and now can spend the twilight of their lives just watching the cars pass and the boys kick soccer balls in the church yard.

They can watch the teenagers hurry past, as they lean on their canes and squint their eyes with their whiskered faces and comment about this strange new world.

I never pass without saying hello, sometimes trying to get a rise out of them.

Once I call out, “Hello boys!”

One looks at me and says, “We were boys.”

“You’re still boys,” I answer.

Sempre.

Always.

I have my favorites. How could I not?

There’s Francesco, who comes into Bar Madness for coffee each morning. 

His sweet smile reveals few remaining teeth. 

I feel close to him. I want to protect him, to make sure he lives as long as he possibly can, to better enjoy this little town where he has made his life.

He calls me Gianni.

And there’s Rocco, who lives on the other side of town, and who does not join the men on the benches. He stays inside his apartment, leaning out the window, always smiling. 

His smile is warm and his eyes shine.

I take a picture of Rocco and post it on social media. 

Weeks later, a man playing cards out behind Bar Centrale, my cousin Giovanni’s afternoon hangout, turns to me and holds out his phone for me to see.

There is the picture of his father.

“I’m Rocco’s son,” he says proudly.

It feels good, like I have connected to something here, made a small difference.

Once, after I post a few pictures of elderly men I take during an evening stroll, someone on social media asks, “Aren’t there any youth in Pomarico?”

Sure,” I answer. “They’re here, moving about in their own universe, unreachable.”

It is not the young who interest me here.

But the ancients.

Those sweet, knowing, smiling men who for me make this town special.

I call her the Woman in Black.

She lives along a narrow lane I walk each morning to Bar Madness for my two cups of cappuccino. She’s always on her porch, tending to plants or hanging clothes.

She’s in her 80s, petite, frail, her hair white. Her all-black attire, worn even on the hottest summer days, suggests that she has lost her husband.

Now she will mark years of mourning by never again wearing the bright colors of her girlhood. But her eyes are alert. She sees me each time I pass.

At first, we merely wave, but as the days and weeks pass we both grow more bold. 

I say hello and I hear her voice for the first time. 

It’s soft, melodic, like birdsong.

After that, I stop and make pleasantries in my limited Italian. One day, a truck blocks the way, the crane on its back making a noise that drowns out our conversation.

I cover my ears as I pass. She does the same.

One morning, feeling particularly spirited after two cups of strong cappuccino, I see her in the distance and emphatically raise both arms in greeting.

She looks at me, and then turns away, as though checking to see if there’s someone else standing behind her, some other person for whom my emotions are meant.

There is no one there. The gesture is meant for her, and her only.

For The Woman in Black.

Then our eyes meet and I point at her, to say, it’s you.

She smiles. 

It’s more of a beam, girlish and bright.

Suddenly, if just for a moment, she isn’t old and frail, mourning the memory of a man who probably left her behind years before.

The smile vanishes as quickly as it came.

But while it is here, it is the most radiant thing in all of Italy.

But that is enough for now.

It has to be.

My time is gone. 

Pomarico will go on without me. 

The men will clamber into bars and cafes, play cards, shout at one another on the street. The old women will sit coquettishly at their door stoops each evening, their hands on their laps.

The Woman in Black will go on mourning her lost husband.

Bruno will go on taking pictures, Mike will still be camera shy. My pal Vinnie will go on making pizzas.

The new friends I’ve made, the family I have here, might mention my name now and again.

But I will not be a mere memory for long.

I will be back.

On my grandfather’s honor.

GIORNALE DI POMARICO: L’estate é finita ed é arrivato il momento della partenza

POMARICO, Italia — I miei giorni sono contati nella piccola cittadina collinare del sud Italia dove è nato mio nonno.

Il caldo clima estivo si è per lo più interrotto e brezze più fresche abbracciano queste strade acciottolate.

Puoi sentirli nel quartiere storico dove i resti del castello e le antiche chiese si trovano su una collina, deserte ma non dimenticate, conservando ancora i loro segreti.

L’autunno è alle porte, tra poco inizierà la scuola e i gruppi di adolescenti che vagano senza meta per le strade di notte avranno di nuovo qualcosa da fare.

Partirò presto.

Non sono pronto per partire, non del tutto.

C’è ancora molto lavoro da fare nei miei sforzi per catturare i ritmi di questo luogo. Ci sono più persone da incontrare, più storie da raccontare.

Non mi sembra di aver passato abbastanza tempo con mio cugino Giovanni.

È conosciuto con alcuni nomi qui.

Ciupuddone. Grande cipolla.

Il Biondo. Dai capelli bianchi.

Per me significa cosa significa famiglia qui nel Sud Italia, o altrove, del resto.

Per decenni ha svolto due lavori, sia come vigile del fuoco che come custode del terreno di famiglia in campagna.

Ha cresciuto tre figlie, prendendo in prestito denaro per costruire una casa in città.

Quando sarà il momento, tutto ciò che possiede sarà diviso tra la sua famiglia rimasta.

Adesso è un bisnonno.

Il tempo scorre lentamente in questa piccola cittadina, ma scorre comunque.

Non puoi sfuggirgli.

Non può sfuggirgli. E nemmeno io posso.

Lentamente, con l’aiuto di tanti, ho messo insieme una foto di mio nonno, Giacomo Antonio Glionna, che nacque qui nel 1888 e all’età di 18 anni partì per l’America a bordo di un piroscafo nel 1906.

Ci sono ancora altri pezzi del puzzle da trovare, ulteriori ricerche da fare.

Ma non c’è più tempo.

Nelle prossime settimane pubblicherò altri racconti del mio soggiorno qui, ricordi che ho deciso di conservare per un po’, per lasciarli invecchiare.

Li leggerò di nuovo per assicurarmi di non essere stato troppo duro nel mio giudizio, o troppo generoso nelle mie lodi.

Ma quelli dovranno aspettare.

Per ora è ora di andare.

Domenica mattina, Mike e Bruno faranno un viaggio di 90 minuti fino a Bari, così potrò prendere un treno veloce per tornare a Roma.

Insieme, noi tre. È appropriato.

Siamo stati una squadra giornalistica, guidando le strade secondarie della Basilicata, trovando nuovi posti e persone di cui scrivere, cementando la nostra amicizia lungo la strada.

Dopo aver incontrato Bruno, un grosso orso da ragazzo, mio ​​cugino Giovanni mi dice che siamo imparentati in qualche modo alla lontana – un bisnonno di questo clan si è sposato con quella famiglia – tutto questo tanti anni fa che difficilmente si fa una differenza adesso.

Ma a Pomarico sì.

La famiglia è famiglia, non importa quanto sia distante.

Per tutta l’estate ho scritto di mio cugino Bruno e del mio amico Mike, che di solito guidavano la macchina e traducevano sempre le mie interviste.

Ha anche mantenuto le nostre escursioni nei tempi previsti quando Bruno, il simpatico Bruno, ha minacciato di portarci in una nuova direzione improvvisa.

Incontrava qualcuno di nuovo e cercava di trascinarmi a casa di qualche vedova per assaggiare la sua pasta fatta in casa, i suoi biscotti o il suo vino.

Mike resiste tranquillamente.

Come un accompagnatore a un ballo, ci raduna.

Comincio a chiamare Mike Il Duce in quel modo, perché nonostante tutti i suoi difetti, Mussolini faceva arrivare in orario i treni italiani.

Incontro Mike giorni dopo il mio arrivo in città.

Cammino su una collina nel quartiere storico, carico di borse della spesa, e scopro un uomo snello, dai capelli grigi, con gli occhiali che aspetta fuori dal mio appartamento.

Mio cugino gli ha detto che sono qui, un americano grosso e stupido con limitate conoscenze italiane.

E così Mike si fa avanti. Per aiutarmi a capire meglio questo luogo e la sua lingua.

“Sei tu John?” lui chiede.

Non deve chiederlo due volte.

Il suo inglese è musica per le mie orecchie.

Ci connettiamo.

Penso che Mike si diverta a guidarmi nei miei viaggi per conoscere il luogo in cui è nato e cresciuto.

Fa emergere la guida turistica che esiste nel profondo di lui.

Ha trascorso 20 anni a Brooklyn, quindi parla tre lingue: inglese, italiano e il dialetto pomaricano locale.

Tutti e tre tornano utili quest’estate.

Poi succede qualcosa di strano.

Qualche settimana fa, Mike ed io siamo andati a trovare un mio cugino nella sua fattoria, parlando della sua ricerca genealogica sulla nostra famiglia.

Mio cugino nomina questo lontano parente e quello.

Mike si gira verso di me e dice a bassa voce, come fa sempre: “Penso che siamo imparentati”.

Come nel caso di Bruno, stiamo invecchiando i frutti su rami distanti dello stesso albero.

Ma comunque lo stesso albero.

Famiglia.

Questo mi fa sentire più vicino a Mike?

Non proprio.

Eravamo prima amici, poi parenti lontani.
Ma dimostra semplicemente una cosa su questa piccola cittadina collinare dove è nato mio nonno.

Il mondo è davvero piccolo.

E Pomarico è ancora più piccolo.

Mi siedo nell’ufficio del sindaco e, come domanda di congedo, Francesco Mancini mi chiede di nominare alcune cose che ricorderò di Pomarico.

Rispondo subito. Ci ho pensato – e scritto – per tutta l’estate.

Ricorderò Pomarico per la sua musica, i piccioni che tubano appena fuori dalla mia finestra, il clangore delle campane della chiesa che scandiscono ogni ora che passa, il modo in cui gli uomini si urlano addosso per strada in modo silenzioso e gutturale.

Ayooh! Ayah! Owwww!

E come dimenticare le macchine che rallentano per strada mentre cammino, con i loro autisti che gridano il mio soprannome di famiglia, un richiamo al riconoscimento.

Ciupuddone!

E ascolterò il ritmo anni ’80 della band Depeche Mode e vedrò la mia amica Maggie alzare gli altoparlanti della sua macchina, persa nella musica. La moderna Maggie, sempre vestita di nero.

Ricorderò Pomarico anche per il suo silenzio, le sere in cui cammino da solo nel dedalo di vicoli sulla collina del centro storico, dove l’unico rumore è lo sgambettare dei gatti di strada.

E ricorderò Pomarico per la sua semplicità, il modo in cui i vecchi si siedono sulle panchine sparse per il paese.

Come corvi su un filo, alcuni sono dolci e silenziosi, altri burberi e bruschi.

Tutti hanno il diritto di essere esattamente come vogliono essere.

Per tutta la vita hanno lavorato duro come agricoltori, la maggior parte di loro, e ora possono trascorrere il crepuscolo della loro vita semplicemente guardando le macchine che passano e i ragazzi che calciano i palloni da calcio nel cortile della chiesa.

Possono guardare gli adolescenti che passano di corsa, mentre si appoggiano ai loro bastoni e socchiudono gli occhi con le loro facce baffute e commentano questo strano nuovo mondo.

Non passo mai senza salutare, a volte cercando di tirarmi su.

Una volta che chiamo “Ciao ragazzi!”

Uno mi guarda e dice: “Eravamo ragazzi”.

“Siete ancora ragazzi”, rispondo.

Sempre.

Ho i miei preferiti.

Come non potrei?

C’è Francesco, che ogni mattina viene a prendere un caffè al Bar Madness.

Il suo dolce sorriso rivela pochi denti rimasti.

Mi sento vicino a lui, come se volessi proteggerlo, assicurarmi che viva il più a lungo possibile, per godersi al meglio questa cittadina dove ha costruito la sua vita.

Mi chiama Gianni.

E c’è Rocco, che abita dall’altra parte della città, e che non si unisce agli uomini sulle panchine. Resta nel suo appartamento, affacciato alla finestra, sempre sorridente.

Il suo sorriso è caldo e i suoi occhi brillano.

Una volta faccio una foto a Rocco e la pubblico sui social media.

Alcune settimane dopo, un uomo che gioca a carte dietro il Bar Centrale, il ritrovo pomeridiano di mio cugino Giovanni, si rivolge a me

Mi tende il telefono perché lo veda.

C’è la foto di suo padre.

“Sono il figlio di Rocco”, dice con orgoglio.

È bello, come se mi fossi connesso a qualcosa qui, facendo una piccola differenza.

Una volta, dopo aver postato alcune foto di uomini anziani che scatto durante una passeggiata serale, qualcuno sui social chiede: “Non ci sono giovani a Pomarico?”

Certo» rispondo. “Sono qui, si muovono nel loro universo, irraggiungibile.”

Non sono i giovani che mi interessano qui.

Ma gli antichi.

Quegli uomini dolci, sapienti, sorridenti che per me rendono speciale questa città.

La chiamo La Donna in Nero.

Vive lungo una stradina stretta dove vado ogni mattina al Bar Madness per le mie due tazze di cappuccino.

È sempre sotto il portico, a prendersi cura delle piante o a stendere i vestiti.

Ha più di 80 anni, è minuta, fragile, ha i capelli bianchi.

Il suo abbigliamento total black, indossato anche nelle giornate estive più calde, suggerisce che abbia perso il marito.

Ora segnerà anni di lutto non indossando mai più i colori vivaci della sua infanzia.

Ma i suoi occhi sono attenti. Mi vede ogni volta che passo.

All’inizio ci limitiamo a salutare, ma con il passare dei giorni e delle settimane diventiamo entrambi più audaci.

La saluto e sento la sua voce per la prima volta.

È morbido, melodico, come il canto degli uccelli.

Dopodiché mi fermo e faccio dei convenevoli nel mio italiano limitato.

Un giorno un camion ci sbarra la strada e la gru sul retro fa un rumore che soffoca la nostra conversazione.

Mi copro le orecchie mentre passo. Lei fa lo stesso.

Una mattina, particolarmente allegro dopo due tazze di cappuccino forte, la vedo in lontananza e alzo enfaticamente entrambe le braccia in segno di saluto.

Mi guarda e poi si volta, come per controllare se c’è qualcun altro dietro di lei, qualche altra persona a cui sono destinate le mie emozioni.

Non c’è nessuno lì.

Il gesto è rivolto a lei, e a lei soltanto.

Per La Donna in Nero. 

Poi i nostri occhi si incontrano e io la indico, per dire che sei tu.

Lei sorride.

È più un raggio, da ragazzina e luminoso.

All’improvviso, anche se solo per un momento, non è più vecchia e fragile, a piangere il ricordo di un uomo che probabilmente l’ha lasciata indietro anni prima.

Il sorriso svanisce con la stessa rapidità con cui è arrivato.

Ma già che è qui, è la cosa più radiosa di tutta Italia.

Ma per ora basta.

Deve essere.

Il mio tempo è finito.

Pomarico andrà avanti senza di me.

Gli uomini entreranno nei bar e nei caffè, giocheranno a carte, si urleranno addosso per strada.

Le vecchie donne si siederanno ogni sera con civetteria sulla soglia delle loro porte, con le mani in grembo.

La Donna in Nero continuerà a piangere il marito perduto.

Bruno continuerà a scattare foto, Mike sarà ancora timido davanti alla macchina fotografica. Il mio amico Vinnie continuerà a fare le pizze.

I nuovi amici che ho conosciuto, la famiglia che ho qui, potrebbero menzionare il mio nome di tanto in tanto.

Ma non sarò solo un ricordo per molto tempo.

Tornerò.
