BERNALDA, Italy — We ease gently through the turns of a shady country lane, launched on an adventure to explore the hill town where the Italian-American director Francis Ford Coppola has his roots.
With his three-part Godfather movie series, Coppola introduced many Americans to the unmistakable culture and complex social history of Southern Italy — its signature food, violence and irresistible romance.
His grandfather, Agostino, left here as a young man for America in 1905, the same year as my own grandfather, Antonio, who grew up 19 miles away, in Pomarico.
Agostino always called his hometown as Bernalda Bella, beautiful Bernalda, which was precisely how my grandfather remembered his own birthplace.
Coppola recently built a lavish five-star hotel, Palazzo Margherita, in the center of town, putting Bernalda on the international cultural map.
Now my two partners-in-crime, Bruno and Mike, want to show me the place that’s so famous and so close to the little town where our own family roots run deep.
Mike is behind the wheel while Bruno, my distant cousin, rides shotgun, with me in the backseat. Oddly, an English song plays on the radio, Neil Young’s Southern Man, and I realize that I am wildly lucky to have met these two Southern Italian men.
While Young’s lyrics are bitter, my relationship with these two, who go to great lengths to make sure I see the real Lucania, has become as sweet as tiramisu.
Bruno turns to me with a running dialogue in Italian. He’s a cheery tour guide, the kind who will stop at nothing at secure front-row seats for every event.
As he talks, he’s already on his cell phone, set on speaker, the line ringing.
He has a friend in Bernalda, a cousin of Coppola’s, he says. Let’s see if he’ll meet us for coffee and spin a few family yarns.
Gaetano Russo’s voice is low-key as he answers and Bruno launches into the smoothest public relations pitch I have ever heard outside of Hollywood itself.
His American cousin is in town, he explains, researching a book about his family roots, and he wants to meet with the cousin of the famous American film director.
But alas, Gaetano has heard the pitch all too many times. Even though Bruno is a friend, the artist, teacher and filmmaker has grown tired of answering questions about his acclaimed cousin.
Stuttering, Bruno takes another tact, but loses the line. He calls back, apologizes about the disconnect and starts again. But Gaetano is resolute. There is a tone of weary sadness in his voice.
He’s just too busy, he says. And then he’s gone.
I explain to Bruno that I’m not as curious about Coppola as I am in Gaetano himself.
I want to know about the role of the Southern Italian artist in world culture and his opinion of the official support he and other artists receive in their own land.
Bruno is momentarily deflated.
“I should have tried that approach,” he says.
But Bruno is like a big-fisted prize fighter with an unfortunate glass jaw.
He’s never down for long.
“We’ll try again later,” he says. “We’ll get him.”

We’re strolling along Bernalda’s main drag, the Corso Umberto.
Directly across the street from Coppola’s stately Palazzo Margherita hotel sits a tree-shaded coffee bar. Bruno knows the owner and a waiter, a former regional cop he used to work with.
Then he spots another friend, Vincenzo Puntillo, an actor and man-about-town. He’s bearded, wears a wide-brimmed Southern plantation hat. He’s all about style. He offers us to sit and have a coffee.
There’s something else about Puntillo: He’s good friends with Gaetano Russo.
Within moments, Bruno is back on his cell phone, reporting our whereabouts.
I know who he’s talking to.
He soon provides an update: While we are easily dispensable, Russo can’t pass up the chance to meet with his old friend Puntillo.
“He’s coming down now,” he says.
Cousin Bruno strikes again.

The morning is hot, already nearing 100 degrees, but the Godfather — Bernarda’s homegrown resident artist and filmmaker — arrives wearing a long-sleeved shirt and scarf, his graying hair pulled back into a ponytail.
His presence is unmistakable. Larger than life. I tell him he looks a lot like Coppola.
“Yes,” he replies in accented English. “I have my problems.”
Like his famous American cousin, Gaetano is a Renaissance Man: a filmmaker, set designer, wine grower and connoisseur, as well as a sculptor who works with stone, glass, metal and various elements.
He co-operates the Academy of Fine Arts, in a castle 10 minutes away, where he teaches classes and sponsors exhibits, music and theater performances.
He’s deeply tied to this land of his birth, which drew him home after studying art in Bologna as a young man. He loves to document both the people and their rugged mountainous environment.
Gaetano has made numerous films promoting the region’s wine industry.
In one, he took his cameras into the vineyards where the famous Basilicata wine Aglianico del Vulture is produced, exploring how profoundly connected the inhabitants of the surrounding towns are to the land.
We discuss his present projects, the three films he’s at work on, as his phone rings constantly: Another Italian director, a casting person, his wifi repair man.
As we talk, Bruno snaps away at the two of us with his Canon camera. He’s always peering through his lens finder, never missing a moment.
When the subject of Coppola arises, Gateano is in no way resistant. He loves and respects his cousin, as it turns out, and has no problem talking about him — now that I’ve been introduced to his inner-circle.
He slaps my knee, refers to me as his “distinguished journalist friend” and when he hears that I once worked for the Los Angeles Times, asks if I know Jack Nicholson.
Both Russo boys grew up poor in Bernalda.
Gaetano describes how, in 1972, both he and his younger brother, Michele, picked olives so they could afford to buy a ticket to the first Godfather movie, which opened at the Cinema delle Vittorie, the local theater in town.
When they got home, their father told them the film’s director was actually a distant American cousin, whose grandfather was born in Bernalda.
So began the family’s cultural connection, helping to lead both brothers on a path to become prolific — and celebrated — Italian filmmakers.
In the late 1980s, Michele was a young drama student, fresh out of the academy of dramatic arts in Milan. He wrote a letter to Coppola in Rome and the director came to Bernalda to meet his distant clan.
Coppola visited, speaking little English. He had dinner with relatives and then slept in the same bed with a male cousin, an accommodation reached after the man’s wife was dispatched somewhere else.
“A day you won’t forget,” Geatano recalls. “As if we had always loved and known each other. I can guarantee you: real goosebumps!”
Eventually, Coppola began to return to Bernalda more often and now visits several times a year, the Russo brothers greeting him with homemade peppers and olives.
Years after the first meeting, Coppola cast Michele in a cameo role as a Sicilian hitman in The Godfather III. In 2016, Michele produced a well-received documentary called “The Family Whistle,” about Coppola’s Italian origins in Bernalda.
The whistle is the sound that Italian clans use to call their own home to dinner.

Gaetano celebrates all his Coppola distant cousins who have made good in America.
There are musicians, actors and academics among them, including Nic Cage, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman and Sofia Coppola.
Yet being related to such an auteur as Francis Ford Coppola can be annoying. People approach him, cloyingly, only looking to get close to the man he calls the maestro.
Like the American producer who insisted that Gaetano was the perfect set designer for her next project. They talked for an hour by phone, as the woman gushed about the beauty of Basilicata and the rich family heritage.
Then she got down to business.
It was about the credits.
“Can we say you are Francis Ford Coppola’s cousin?”
Geatano politely hung up.
He still bemoans the slow growth of the arts culture in Bernalda and across the Basilicata region. He described the pain for artists like himself, he says, unveiling a new work with little government support.
In his darkest moments, he likens the official reception to his work to the novel “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad.
“It’s like holding a beautiful exhibition on a deserted island,” he says.
One experience cuts deep.
Gaetano describes the demise of the sculpture he calls his capolavoro, or masterpiece, a sculpture depicting his interpretation of the love between Greek mythological figures Apollo and Daphne.
Taking two decades to complete, the piece was placed on public display in the coastal town of Metaponto, a settlement inhabited by the Greeks thousands of years ago.
Then Gaetano heard about the deplorable way local officials had ignored the art work. Last year, he rushed to the scene to find the accompanying pool green with algae and floating cigarettes.
After a public battle, in which the sculptor threatened to invade the town with an army of angry arts patrons, Geatano took down the installment.
The move still pains him.
“That sculpture was the work of my life,” he says. “It was like a son to me. And when those people destroyed him, they destroyed my heart as well.”
He stops, obviously moved by the moment.
“This work was important to me, my country, my house,” he adds. “I destroyed it. I just could not live with it, with what it had become.”

Vincenzo Puntillo has known Gaetano for many years. He understands this complex man.
“Like all men, he has his own personality; he loves to describe the great Italian-American director who made the behavior of us southerners known to the world,” he says. “But he also wants to tell the world that he is not only a relative of Coppola’s, but that he too is an artist.”
Yet it is not just the world that needs a reminder of Gaetano’s talent. It seems that local public officials in Bernalda and the rest of Basilicata could use a little refresher course as well.
Puntillo described how local arts officials want to create a local cinema museum in Bernalda dedicated to Coppola. But neither Russo brother has been asked to take part in the project. Instead, officials even approached one of Gaetano’s art students.
The concept has since languished and Puntillo and other supporters of the Russo brothers know why.
“It is said that the grass is always greener on the other side.”

Geatano is easy to like, a big man, full of life.
He later sent me a Facebook friend request. We plan to keep in touch.
I come looking for the local footprint of a famous director and instead find a talented creator who only wants the local powers to better recognize the grassroots art produced here.
On the way home, I congratulate Bruno on his never-say-die fortitude.
Thanks to him, and Mike, my Southern Italian black book of people-to-know has grown fat, rich and dog-eared.
GIORNALE DI BASILICATA: Un Mattino col Padrino di Bernalda
BERNALDA, Italia — Percorriamo dolcemente le svolte di un’ombrosa stradina di campagna, lanciati in un’avventura per esplorare la cittadina collinare dove il regista italo-americano Francis Ford Coppola ha le sue radici.
Con la sua serie di film in tre parti Il Padrino, Coppola ha introdotto molti americani alla cultura inconfondibile e alla complessa storia sociale del Sud Italia: il suo cibo caratteristico, la violenza e l’irresistibile romanticismo.
Suo nonno Agostino partì da qui giovane per l’America nel 1905, lo stesso anno di mio nonno Antonio, cresciuto a 19 miglia di distanza, a Pomarico.
Agostino ha sempre chiamato la sua città natale Bernalda Bella, la bella Bernalda, proprio così mio nonno ricordava la sua terra natale.
Coppola ha recentemente costruito un lussuoso hotel a cinque stelle, Palazzo Margherita, nel centro della città, ponendo Bernalda sulla mappa culturale internazionale.
Ora i miei due complici, Bruno e Mike, vogliono mostrarmi il luogo così famoso e così vicino al paesino dove affondano le nostre radici familiari.
Mike è al volante mentre Bruno, il mio lontano cugino, cavalca il fucile, con me sul sedile posteriore. Stranamente, alla radio suona una canzone inglese, Neil Young’s Southern Man, e mi rendo conto di essere incredibilmente fortunato ad aver incontrato questi due uomini del sud dell’Italia.
Mentre i testi di Young sono amari, il mio rapporto con questi due, che fanno di tutto per assicurarmi di vedere la vera Lucania, è diventato dolce come il tiramisù
Bruno si rivolge a me con un continuo dialogo in italiano. È una guida turistica allegra, il tipo che non si fermerà davanti a nulla in posti sicuri in prima fila per ogni evento.
Mentre parla, è già al cellulare, in vivavoce, la linea squilla.
Ha un amico a Bernalda, cugino di Coppola, dice. Vediamo se ci incontrerà per un caffè e racconterà qualche storia di famiglia.
La voce di Gaetano Russo è bassa mentre risponde e Bruno si lancia nel tono di pubbliche relazioni più fluido che abbia mai sentito al di fuori della stessa Hollywood.
Suo cugino americano è in città, spiega, alla ricerca di un libro sulle radici della sua famiglia, e vuole incontrare il cugino del famoso regista americano.
Ma ahimè, Gaetano ha sentito il tono troppe volte. Anche se Bruno è un amico, l’artista, insegnante e regista si è stancato di rispondere a domande sul suo acclamato cugino.
Balbettando, Bruno prende un altro tocco, ma perde la linea. Richiama, si scusa per la disconnessione e ricomincia. Ma Gaetano è risoluto. C’è un tono di stanca tristezza nella sua voce.
È semplicemente troppo impegnato, dice. E poi se n’è andato.
Spiego a Bruno che non sono curioso di Coppola quanto lo sono di Gaetano stesso.
La sua opinione sul ruolo dell’artista meridionale nella cultura mondiale. E il sostegno ufficiale che riceve nella sua stessa terra.
Bruno è momentaneamente sgonfio.
“Avrei dovuto provare questo approccio”, dice.
Ma Bruno è come un pugile dal pugno grosso con una sfortunata mascella di vetro.
Non è mai giù a lungo.
“Ci riproveremo più tardi”, dice. «Lo prenderemo.»

Stiamo passeggiando lungo la via principale di Bernalda, il Corso Umberto.
Direttamente dall’altra parte della strada rispetto al maestoso hotel Palazzo Margherita di Coppola si trova un bar all’ombra degli alberi. Bruno conosce il titolare e un cameriere, un ex poliziotto regionale con cui lavorava.
Poi vede un altro amico, Vincenzo Puntillo, attore e uomo di città. Ha la barba, indossa un cappello da piantagione del sud a tesa larga. Si tratta di stile. Ci offre di sederci e prendere un caffè.
C’è qualcos’altro in Puntillo: è un buon amico di Gaetano Russo.
In pochi istanti, Bruno è di nuovo al cellulare, comunicandoci dove ci trovavamo.
So con chi sta parlando.
Fornisce presto un aggiornamento: mentre siamo facilmente dispensabili, Russo non può lasciarsi sfuggire l’occasione di incontrare il suo vecchio amico Puntillo.
“Adesso sta scendendo”, dice.
Il cugino Bruno colpisce ancora.

La mattina è calda, si avvicinano già ai 100 gradi ma il Padrino – l’artista e regista residente in casa di Bernarda – arriva indossando una camicia a maniche lunghe e una sciarpa, i capelli grigi raccolti in una coda di cavallo.
La sua presenza è inconfondibile. Più grande della vita. Gli dico che assomiglia molto a Coppola.
“Sì”, risponde in un inglese accentato. “Ho i miei problemi”.
Come il celebre cugino americano, Gaetano è un uomo del Rinascimento: regista, scenografo, viticoltore e conoscitore, nonché scultore che lavora la pietra, il vetro, il metallo e vari elementi.
Collabora con l’Accademia di Belle Arti, in un castello a 10 minuti di distanza, dove tiene corsi e sponsorizza mostre, spettacoli musicali e teatrali.
È profondamente legato a questa sua terra natale, che lo ha riportato a casa dopo aver studiato arte a Bologna da giovane. Ama documentare sia le persone che il loro aspro ambiente montuoso.
Gaetano ha realizzato numerosi film che promuovono l’industria vinicola della regione, tra cui uno in cui ha portato le sue telecamere nei vigneti dove viene prodotto il famoso vino lucano Aglianico del Vulture, esplorando quanto profondamente gli abitanti delle città circostanti siano legati alla terra.
Discutiamo dei suoi progetti attuali, dei tre film a cui sta lavorando, mentre il suo telefono squilla continuamente: un altro regista italiano, un addetto al casting, il suo riparatore wifi.
Mentre parliamo, Bruno scatta a noi due con la sua macchina fotografica Canon. Sbircia sempre attraverso il suo mirino, senza mai perdere un momento.
Quando si pone l’argomento Coppola, Gateano non oppone alcuna resistenza. Ama e rispetta suo cugino, a quanto pare, e non ha problemi a parlare di lui, ora che sono stato presentato alla sua cerchia ristretta.
Mi dà uno schiaffo sul ginocchio, si riferisce a me come al suo “illustre amico giornalista” e quando viene a sapere che una volta ho lavorato per il Los Angeles Times, mi chiede se conosco Jack Nicholson.

Entrambi i ragazzi Russo sono cresciuti poveri a Bernalda.
Gaetano descrive come, nel 1972, sia lui che suo fratello minore, Michele, raccolsero le olive per potersi permettere di comprare un biglietto per il primo film de Il Padrino, che andò in scena a Cinema della Vittorie, al teatro locale della città.
Quando tornarono a casa, il padre disse loro che il regista del film era in realtà un lontano cugino americano, il cui nonno era nato a Bernalda.
Così iniziò il legame culturale della famiglia, contribuendo a guidare entrambi i fratelli su un percorso per diventare prolifici e celebri cineasti italiani.
Alla fine degli anni ’80, Michele era un giovane studente di recitazione, fresco di laurea all’Accademia d’Arte Drammatica di Milano. Scrisse una lettera a Coppola a Roma e il regista venne a Bernalda per incontrare il suo lontano clan.
Coppola ha visitato, parlando poco inglese. Ha cenato con i parenti e poi ha dormito nello stesso letto di un cugino maschio, sistemazione raggiunta dopo che la moglie dell’uomo è stata spedita altrove.
“Un giorno che non dimenticherai”, ricorda Geatano. “Come se ci fossimo sempre amati e conosciuti. Te lo posso garantire: una vera pelle d’oca!
Alla fine, Coppola ha iniziato a tornare più spesso a Bernalda e ora fa visita più volte all’anno, i fratelli Russo lo salutano con peperoni e olive fatti in casa.
Anni dopo il primo incontro, Coppola ha scelto Michele in un cameo come sicario siciliano in Il Padrino III. Nel 2016, Michele ha prodotto un documentario ben accolto intitolato “The Family Whistle”, sulle origini italiane di Coppola a Bernalda.
Il fischio è il suono che i clan italiani usano per chiamare a cena la propria casa.

Gaetano festeggia tutti i suoi lontani cugini Coppola che hanno fatto bene in America.
Tra loro ci sono musicisti, attori e accademici, tra cui Nic Cage, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman e Sofia Coppola.
Eppure essere imparentato con un autore come Francis Ford Coppola può essere fastidioso. Le persone si avvicinano a lui, in modo stucchevole, per lo più solo cercando un accordo con l’uomo che chiama il maestro.
Come il produttore americano che ha insistito sul fatto che Gaetano fosse lo scenografo perfetto per il suo prossimo progetto. Hanno parlato per un’ora al telefono, mentre la donna parlava della bellezza della Basilicata e del ricco patrimonio di famiglia.
Poi si è messa al lavoro.
Riguardava i titoli di coda.
“Possiamo dire che sei cugino di Francis Ford Coppola?”
Geatano riattaccò educatamente.
Deplora ancora la lenta crescita della cultura artistica a Bernalda e in tutta la Basilicata. Ha descritto il dolore per artisti come lui, dice, svelando un nuovo lavoro con scarso sostegno del governo.
Nei suoi momenti più bui, paragona l’accoglienza ufficiale al suo lavoro al romanzo “Cuore di tenebra” di Joseph Conrad.
“È come tenere una bella mostra su un’isola deserta”, dice.
Un’esperienza taglia in profondità.
Gaetano descrive la fine della scultura chiama il suo capolavoro, o capolavoro, una scultura raffigurante la sua interpretazione dell’amore tra le figure mitologiche greche Apollo e Dafne.
Impiegando due decenni per essere completato, il pezzo è stato esposto al pubblico nella vicina città costiera di Metaponto, un insediamento abitato dai greci migliaia di anni fa.
Poi Gaetano venne a sapere del deplorevole modo in cui i funzionari locali avevano ignorato l’opera d’arte. L’anno scorso, si è precipitato sul posto per trovare la piscina di accompagnamento verde con alghe e sigarette galleggianti.
Dopo una battaglia pubblica, in cui lo scultore minacciò di invadere la città con un esercito di mecenati infuriati, Geatano fece ritirare la rata.
Il trasloco gli fa ancora male.
“Quella scultura è stata l’opera della mia vita”, dice. “Per me è stato come un figlio. E quando quelle persone lo hanno distrutto, hanno distrutto anche il mio cuore.
Si ferma, evidentemente commosso dal momento.
“Questo lavoro è stato importante per me, il mio paese, la mia casa”, aggiunge. “L’ho distrutto. Non riuscivo proprio a conviverci, con quello che era diventato.

Vincenzo Puntillo conosce Gaetano da molti anni. Capisce quest’uomo complesso.
“Come tutti gli uomini ha una sua personalità, ama descrivere il grande regista italo-americano che ha fatto conoscere al mondo il comportamento di noi meridionali», dice. “Ma vuole anche dire al mondo che non è solo un parente di Coppola, ma che anche lui è un artista”.
Eppure non è solo il mondo che ha bisogno di ricordare il talento di Gaetano. Sembra che anche i funzionari pubblici locali di Bernalda e del resto della Basilicata potrebbero aver bisogno di un piccolo corso di aggiornamento.
Puntillo ha descritto come i funzionari locali delle arti vogliono creare un museo del cinema locale a Bernalda dedicato a Coppola. Ma nessuno dei fratelli Russo è stato chiamato a prendere parte al progetto. Invece, i funzionari si sono persino avvicinati a uno degli studenti d’arte di Gaetano.
Da allora il concetto ha languito e Puntillo e altri sostenitori dei fratelli Russo sanno perché.
“Si dice che l’erba del vicino sia sempre più verde.”

Geatano è facile da amare, un omone, pieno di vita.
In seguito mi ha inviato una richiesta di amicizia su Facebook. Abbiamo in programma di restare in contatto.
Vengo a cercare l’impronta locale di un famoso regista e invece trovo un creatore di talento che vuole solo che i poteri locali riconoscano meglio l’arte di base prodotta qui.
Sulla strada di casa, mi congratulo con Bruno per la sua forza d’animo che non muore mai.
Grazie a lui e Mike, il mio libro nero di persone da conoscere dell’Italia meridionale è diventato grasso, ricco e con le orecchie di cane.
