POMARICO, Italy — I first meet the Southern Italian poet Nicola De Lillo during his reading in the courtyard of the Palazzo Marchesale, an imposing 18th Century fortress that was once owned by a wealthy ruling family here.

It is an evening in late July and the surrounding stone walls that rise above us create a quiet realm where subtle revelations can be made, secrets told, emotions unearthed.

Twelve in all, we poetry listeners are like a jury — half men, half women — waiting to decide.whether we like what we hear, approve of how it makes us feel. 

We sit in plastic chairs encircling a young artist whose gentle eyes project warmth and intellect. He looks preppy, like he just stepped off a Boston campus.

He wears a blue T-shirt, shorts and red sneakers. 

The promotional poster for his reading introduces him as both a physicist and poet.

How can this be? 

The two words are incongruent. Mismatched. Almost seemingly impossible to connect.

And yet, slowly, through his spoken words, Nicola merges the two concepts, with the exacting finesse of a physicist and the bared emotions of a poet. 

He reads from his first collection of poems, The Universe in a Kiss, a slim volume of 120 pages that carries a gut punch reminiscent of War and Peace.

Your perfume is in the miles

Down my spine. 

I need to feel you move

like sand with your hands in 

it. If I let go, the world ends.

And another.

Look for me in a snowfall,

there are all the things I want to tell you

and all the kisses I want to give you

The woman next to me gasps slightly, at the subtle passion delivered in the words.

An hour later, all of us, the entire jury, buys his book.

I knew that I had to take this poet’s words home with me.

Because Nicola’s work explores a tragic event that rocked his young world, bringing to mind a similar event that still rocks mine.

The deaths of our mothers.

The reading is in Italian, not my strong suit.

I sit next to the author, holding my smartphone, using my Google Translate app, trying my best to keep up with the words, the insights, that tumble forth, the poise and feeling that goes into his work.

He speaks perfect English, but communicates in his native language, Italian, which in itself sounds more like spoken poetry.

At one point, he turns to me and says, “I hope I’m not distracting you.”

Then I realize he thinks I’m scrolling the Internet, not listening.

I blush. 

That could not be farther from the truth.

What is the meaning of poetry today, Nicola asks at the start of his book.

“We ready poetry to give shape to an emotion,” he writes, “recognize it, and bring it out to fight the malaise we would suffer in keeping it locked up.”

He is barely 30. Half my age.

At the reading, I struggle to keep up. The words fly past, unfathomed.

I learn later that he is from the town of Senise, also in Basilicata, about an hour away from Pomarico. 

He is on a reading tour. We are his audience for the evening.

When Nicola is not writing poetry, he is working hard as a candidate for a PhD in astrophysics at the University of Glasgow. He is part of the international LIGO committee that seeks to detect cosmic gravitational waves in space.

As his book cover explains, he has “always cultivated a passion for poetry, science, feels, the mountains and sports.”

How do you pack all that into less than 30 years?

At 30, I was barely an adult. I drank too much, chased women I didn’t even like.

I did not have a clue as to who I was.

Now I am old enough to be this young poet’s father, someone still on a quest to find a part of myself in Italy, in the town where my grandfather was born.

Why didn’t I do this when I was 30?

I feel humbled.

As far as my Google Translate can tell, there is a lot about physics in Nikola’s talk, about how science shapes our world, giving us the tools to feel.

To write poetry.

I glance at the faces of the women in the group. I wonder what they are thinking. 

I guess that they are thinking that this young man must be from another planet. 

They live in a world where male dominance still prevails. It is a culture of the Alpha Wolf. They have endured it all of their lives.

And here comes this young man, young enough to be their son, trying to help them learn how to feel.

There is something else I pick up on.

Nicola has felt loss already in his life. He writes about it in his poems.

He mentions, obscurely, as far as I can tell, that he lost his mother.

He reads a poem called “Hi Mom.”

“Let’s pretend

that in this last kiss

we told each other everything,

let’s pretend

that we have touched enough,

and always while pretending,

let’s step away at the point it is enough,

because soon you will leave,

and I do not know from who 

I can learn love, Mom.

Mom, the word

that the universe gave us

to tell us we exist.”

When I hear this, I begin to understand him, if even just a little bit.

I, too, lost my mother, far too early. Not as early as him, but early enough. 

When the reading is over, like the others, I linger, like students at a university class, anxious to make emotional contact with their instructor.

We exchange email addresses.

I hurry home, anxious to ask him questions.

My email is brief. I tell him that I am already a fan of his work.

I wonder how minds and personalities and views of the world evolve so quickly in some people, and so slowly, if at all, in others.

I have this feeling that I want to write about this young poet, partially as a way to perhaps better understand myself.

I ask him to write me a story on the loss of his mother.

I lost my mother when I was 51. I was working in China at the time, as a newspaper foreign correspondent. I was in Beijing.

The call came in the middle of the night, at a time when there is no good news.

There was a banging on the door of my hotel room and a clerk told me in Mandarin to turn on my cell phone, that I had a call from the United States.

I felt dread.

My father was 86. He had already begun to suffer the effects of onset dementia. But he was still the sweet soul he always was. He just had a harder times remembering things.

“Who cares if you don’t remember what you had for lunch?” I told him.

He didn’t drive anymore. One day, he had gone out for groceries at the neighborhood supermarket and when he came out to his car, he couldn’t remember where he lived anymore.

He dove around until something, maybe a tree, or an intersection, triggered his memory.

He gave the car keys to my mother, who did all the driving.

My mother was his caretaker. She watched over him.

I called my wife, expecting the worst.

“It’s my Dad, right?” I said.

No,” she said softly. “It’s your Mom.”

She was crying.

I remember that moment as my body received the news. It didn’t make sense.

My mother was gone. No, it couldn’t be. It just couldn’t.

My knees buckled. I collapse on top of myself, like a Twin Tower.

I had never fallen that way before, nor ever again. I have never had anyone so close give me the most terrible news I had ever heard, that my mother was dead.

She was 80.

Nicola agrees to begin a correspondence. And to write about his mother, and her death.

I tell him I am working on a book about family, here in Southern Italy.

And that it feels right that his story becomes a part of it.

He later writes about our first email exchange, saying “I am realizing now he asked that question not for his book, but for me, because it was something I needed to give an answer.”

He writes beautifully, insightfully, in his second language. There is an economy of words. Even though he is not writing poetry.

He is writing a letter to a new friend, about something very painful.

This is how he begins.

People die. You can’t talk to them anymore. You can’t see them, you can’t touch them, you can’t hear them, you can’t feel them. They go. 

And some time they can go in few months, weeks or even days.

My mother taught me her last lesson: what is death for those who leave.

My father taught me what is death for those who stay.

I could not agree more.

I learned the same lessons from both of my parents.

Nikola’s mother was named Angela. 

She died slowly, of cancer.

My mother’s name was Jean.

She was killed in a car crash, taken from us in the time it takes to draw a breath.

Nicola is on death watch.

How else is there to say it? His mother has been placed in hospice care. He is sharing shifts with his father. The middle of the night is the son’s time.

“It is around 2 am, I know she is passing away,” he writes. “That morning, the doctors told me there was nothing to do anymore.”

But wait.

“People who die from cancer experience the most brutal suffering, and for her it wasn’t different,” he continues. “The cancer even decided that the last days of her life she would be blinded.”

How do any of us know how we will act in our last hours?

From cancer?

Will we be brave and show grace, or will we give in to the pain?

No one judges at that time.

Angela shows her son the meaning of love and faith.

“My mother tells me “Nic, go to sleep please, I am fine,” with the sweetest tenderness she used to show. Even in the worst night of her life. 

I just say “Who will hold your hand, mom?”

And with her typical gesture of scrolling her head when agreeing to carry another load for someone else she replies “Don’t worry, Jesus will hold my hand.”

Because Nicola’s mother knows something that he does not.

“My mother knows she is dying and is telling me not to worry. Like she didn’t have enough to deal with at the moment … I am now sure she knew it before the doctors, before we could figure it out, living her last two months in bed, blind, with atrocious pain and not even complaining about it. 

Just loving us and being loving and supporting.”

Finally, as the end comes closer, Nicola’s mother thinks about her son, not herself.

He watches her expend her last energy, raising her hand to each new nurse, as though asking  for the permission to speak.

“Sorry, can I say something?” with her now weak voice,” Nicola writes. “You know my son here wrote a poetry book” with all the pride a mother can show. 

“Believe me I was unable to grasp why she would do that. Almost shocked.”

Angela will pass away a few days later.

I feel for Nicola as I read these words.

He is too young for such ache, I think, such loss.

When someone close to them dies, people will often say, “I wish I’d had the chance to say goodbye.”

No, you don’t.

Having the chance to say farewell means the person is dying slowly, like Angela, in excruciating pain.

To that wish, I always answer, “Don’t wait. Say goodbye now. Say goodbye every day.”

I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to my mother, not the way I would have liked, when she was still here, still active, still laughing, still in a bowling league.

I didn’t think of it. There was always time. 

I was too busy being me.

My father always called her Mario Andretti, after the race car driver. 

Since he stopped driving, he rode shotgun in the passenger seat and held on for dear life.

He swears he once saw her make a turn on two wheels.”

“Jean, slow down,” he’d caution.

On the last morning of her life, she left hastily, probably in a hurry, to run errands.

My wife and I had gotten her a spa treatment a few days before. She later left a phone message, saying how much she’d enjoyed herself.

Pampered, she called it. 

In heaven. 

“Drive carefully,” my father called out as she left.

To his Mario Andretti.

She ran the stop sign. That’s what the police report said.

She had stopped to drop something off and was hurrying to her next appointment.

She must have been lost in thought. She must have not even seen it.

Her car was struck on the driver’s side by a motorist traveling at least 40 m.p.h., probably much more.

She probably didn’t feel anything. It all happened too quickly.

I’d sure that Nicola could explain the sheer physics of losing your life in a hail of crushing metal and glass. The two cars plowed onto a copse of trees off the road.

Other cars stopped. Sirens shrilled. 

My mother was dead.

I never saw her after that. I didn’t go the hospital or the morgue. 

Jean had endured enough.

They removed the stop sign at the intersection after that, put in a traffic light.

Her children paid to sponsor a nearby park bench in her honor.

I flew home from China.

We all converged in Florida to say goodbye to our mother and decide what to do about our Dad. 

He couldn’t live on his own, without her as a caregiver, even though he thought he could.

My sisters went through her possessions, and took things that meant something, things she would have wanted them to have anyway.

I remember the last time we talked. The day before she died.

I was about to take a shower before heading out for the night in Beijing.

She was home in Florida, just getting up.

I had only recently been hired by the newspaper’s foreign desk and they sent out a memo, saying things new bosses always say about new hires, blah, blah, blah.

I knew how much my mother loved hearing those kinds of things, so I sent her a copy.

She told me that morning she carried the notice in her purse, to show all her friends and the people she met in her daily travels.

“My son is a journalist,” she’d probably say. “He works in a foreign land.”

When they returned her possessions, after she left us, the notice was still in her purse.

Nicola finds keepsakes his own mother left behind.

Her poetry.

“My eyes are caught by a thick diary, with a jeans texture cover,” he writes. “I open it. I read the front page “Name: Angela, subject: Poetry.”

“I dig into the pages and I find out at that time my mother was fifteen.”

In the diary, he also finds works by French poet Jaques Prévert and Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, “which funnily enough, are my two favorite authors when speaking about love poems. I find songs lyrics and more poems. But I also find verses I have never read and am quite sure were crafted by her.”

His mother had never told him any of this. 

“Why,” he writes, “will stay a secret forever.”

We see our mothers in ourselves, especially after they are gone.

And we discover that victories and accomplishments we thought were ours alone, things we thought we had figured out for ourselves, actually came from them.

And how good it feels to learn this.

Nicola learns this lesson far younger than I ever did.

“I always wondered where my poetry interest and inclination came from,” he writes. “I now know that the death of my mother, dear John, did not inspire my poetry.

“My mother was poetry; poetry as a way to live and love. To give everything without asking back. As a way to give meaning to things. Her death just allowed me to clearly see this. Sometimes people die to remind us we love them.

No truer sentence has ever been written.

“She didn’t teach me poetry with words, classes or any book. But devoting her life to grant her children a loving and better future, one she did not have.”

And, with that, the poet turns to address one of his admirers.

Me.

“I don’t know if this answers your question, but I want to leave something for you, John — an unpublished poem about loss, that I hope will serve you and your loved ones.”

POMARICO, Italia – Incontro per la prima volta il poeta italiano Nicola De Lillo nel cortile del Palazzo Marchesale, un’imponente fortezza settecentesca che un tempo era di proprietà di una famiglia regnante.

È una sera di fine luglio e le mura di pietra che ci sovrastano creano un regno silenzioso in cui si possono fare sottili rivelazioni, raccontare segreti, liberare emozioni.

Dodici in tutto, siamo come una giuria – metà uomini e metà donne – in attesa di decidere.

Ci sediamo su sedie di plastica attorno a un giovane uomo i cui occhi gentili trasmettono calore e intelletto. Ha un aspetto elegante, come se fosse appena uscito da un campus di Boston.

Indossa una maglietta bianca, pantaloncini e scarpe da ginnastica rosse.

Il poster promozionale della sua lettura lo presenta come fisico e poeta.

Com’è possibile?

Le due parole sono incongruenti. Disadattate. Quasi apparentemente impossibili da collegare.

La giuria emetterà il suo verdetto.

Nicola ce lo mostra.

Lentamente, attraverso la parola, fonde i due concetti, con la finezza esigente di un fisico e le emozioni nude di un poeta.

Legge dalla sua prima raccolta di poesie, L’universo in un bacio, un esile volume di 120 pagine che porta con sé un pugno allo stomaco pari a quello di Guerra e pace.

La donna accanto a me sussulta leggermente, per la sottile passione che traspare dalle parole.

Un’ora dopo, tutti noi, l’intera giuria, compriamo il suo libro.

Qual è il senso della poesia oggi, si chiede Nicola all’inizio del suo libro.

“Prepariamo la poesia per dare forma a un’emozione”, scrive, “riconoscerla e farla emergere per combattere il malessere che soffriremmo nel tenerla rinchiusa”.

Ha appena 30 anni.

Alla lettura, faccio fatica a tenere il passo. Apprendo poi che è del comune di Senise, sempre in Basilicata, a circa un’ora da Pomarico.

Sta facendo un giro di lettura. Siamo il suo pubblico per la serata.

Quando Nicola non scrive poesie, lavora sodo come candidato per un dottorato di ricerca in astrofisica all’Università di Glasgow. Fa parte del comitato internazionale LIGO che cerca di rilevare le onde gravitazionali cosmiche nello spazio.

Come spiega la copertina del suo libro, ha “da sempre coltivato la passione per la poesia, la scienza, i sentimenti, la montagna e lo sport”.

Come impacchettare tutto questo in meno di 30 anni?

A 30 anni ero appena un adulto. Ho bevuto troppo, inseguito donne che non mi piacevano nemmeno.

Non avevo idea di chi fossi.

Ora ho il doppio dell’età di questo giovane poeta, alla ricerca di una parte di me stesso in Italia, nella città dove è nato mio nonno.

Perché non l’ho fatto quando avevo 30 anni?

Mi sento umiliato.

Quando sento questo, comincio a capirlo, anche se solo un po’.

Anch’io ho perso mia madre, troppo presto. Non prima di lui, ma abbastanza presto.

Quando la lettura è finita, come gli altri, mi soffermo, come gli studenti di una classe universitaria, ansiosi di stabilire un contatto emotivo con il loro istruttore.

La mia email è breve. Gli dico che sono già un fan del suo lavoro.

Mi chiedo come le menti, le personalità e le visioni del mondo si evolvano così rapidamente in alcune persone e così lentamente, se non del tutto, in altre.

Ho questa sensazione di voler scrivere di questo giovane poeta, in parte come un modo forse per capire meglio me stesso.

Gli chiedo di scrivermi una storia sulla perdita di sua madre.

Ho perso mia madre quando avevo 51 anni. All’epoca lavoravo in Cina, come corrispondente estero di giornali. Ero a Pechino.

La chiamata è arrivata nel cuore della notte, in un momento in cui non ci sono buone notizie.

Hanno bussato alla porta della mia camera d’albergo e un impiegato mi ha detto in mandarino di accendere il cellulare perché avevo una chiamata dagli Stati Uniti.

Ho avuto paura.

Mio padre aveva 86 anni. Aveva già iniziato a soffrire gli effetti della demenza insorta. Ma era ancora l’anima dolce che era sempre stata. Aveva solo difficoltà a ricordare le cose.

“A chi importa se non ricordi cosa hai mangiato a pranzo?” Gliel’ho detto.

Non guidava più. Un giorno era uscito per fare la spesa al supermercato del quartiere e quando uscì in macchina non ricordava più dove abitava.

Si tuffò finché qualcosa, il malva di un albero o di un incrocio, fece scattare la sua memoria.

Ha dato le chiavi della macchina a mia madre, che ha guidato tutto.

Mia madre era la sua custode. Lei vegliava su di lui.

Nicola accetta di iniziare una corrispondenza. E scrivere di sua madre e della sua morte.

Gli dico che sto lavorando a un libro sulla famiglia, qui nel Sud Italia.

E che sembra giusto che la sua storia ne diventi parte.

In seguito scrive che “mi sto rendendo conto ora che ha fatto quella domanda non per il suo libro, ma per me, perché era qualcosa a cui dovevo dare una risposta”.

Scrive magnificamente, con perspicacia, nella sua seconda lingua. C’è un’economia di parole. Anche se non scrive poesie.

Sta scrivendo una lettera a un nuovo amico, su qualcosa di molto doloroso.

È così che inizia.

La gente muore. Non puoi più parlare con loro. Non puoi vederli, non puoi toccarli, non puoi sentirli, non puoi sentirli. Vanno.

E qualche volta possono andare in pochi mesi, settimane o addirittura giorni.

Mia madre mi ha insegnato la sua ultima lezione: cos’è la morte per chi parte.

Mio padre mi ha insegnato cos’è la morte per chi resta.

Non potrei essere più d’accordo.

Ho imparato le stesse lezioni da entrambi i miei genitori.

La madre di Nikola si chiamava Angela.

È morta lentamente, di cancro.

Il nome di mia madre era Jean.

È rimasta uccisa in un incidente d’auto, ci è stata portata via nel tempo che ci vuole per riprendere fiato.

Nicola è di guardia alla morte.

Come altro c’è da dirlo? Sua madre è stata ricoverata in un hospice. Condivide i turni con suo padre. Il cuore della notte è l’ora del figlio.

“Sono circa le 2 del mattino, so che sta morendo”, scrive. “Quella mattina i dottori mi hanno detto che non c’era più niente da fare”.

Ma aspetta.

“Le persone che muoiono di cancro sperimentano le sofferenze più brutali, e per lei non era diverso”, continua. “Il cancro ha persino deciso che negli ultimi giorni della sua vita sarebbe stata accecata”.

Come facciamo a sapere come agiremo nelle nostre ultime ore?

Dal cancro?

Saremo coraggiosi e mostreremo grazia o cederemo al dolore?

Nessuno giudica in quel momento.

Angela mostra a suo figlio il significato dell’amore e della fede.

“Mia madre mi dice “Nic, vai a dormire per favore, sto bene”, con la più dolce tenerezza che era solita mostrare. Anche nelle notti peggiori della sua vita.

Dico solo “Chi ti terrà la mano, mamma?”

E con il suo gesto tipico di far scorrere la testa quando accetta di portare un altro carico per qualcun altro risponde «Non preoccuparti, Gesù mi terrà per mano».

Perché la madre di Nicola sa qualcosa che lui non sa.

“Mia madre sa che sta morendo e mi dice di non preoccuparmi. Come se non avesse abbastanza da affrontare in quel momento… ora sono sicuro che lo sapeva prima dei dottori, prima che potessimo capirlo, vivendo i suoi ultimi due mesi a letto, cieca, con dolori atroci e senza nemmeno lamentarsi Esso.

Semplicemente amandoci, amandoci e sostenendoci.

Alla fine, mentre la fine si avvicina, la madre di Nicola pensa a suo figlio, non a se stessa.

La guarda esaurire le sue ultime energie, alzando la mano a ogni nuova infermiera, come per chiedere il permesso di parlare.

“Scusa, posso dire una cosa?” con la sua voce ormai debole”, scrive Nicola. “Sai che mio figlio qui ha scritto un libro di poesie” con tutto l’orgoglio che una madre può mostrare.

“Credimi, non sono riuscito a capire perché l’avrebbe fatto. Quasi scioccato.

Angela morirà pochi giorni dopo.

Mi dispiace per Nicola mentre leggo queste parole.

È troppo giovane per un tale dolore, una tale perdita, credo.

Quando muore qualcuno vicino, le persone spesso dicono: “Vorrei aver avuto la possibilità di dire addio”.

Avere la possibilità di dire addio significa che la persona sta morendo lentamente, come Angela, in un dolore lancinante.

Non ho avuto la possibilità di salutare mia madre, non come avrei voluto, quando era ancora qui, ancora attiva, ancora ridente, ancora in una lega di bowling.

Non ci ho pensato. C’era sempre tempo.

Ero troppo impegnato a essere me stesso.

Da quando ha smesso di guidare, ha guidato il fucile sul sedile del passeggero e ha tenuto duro per tutta la vita.

Giura di averla vista una volta fare un giro su due ruote.

“Jean, rallenta”, diceva.

L’ultima mattina della sua vita se ne andò frettolosamente, probabilmente di fretta, per fare delle commissioni.

Mia moglie ed io le avevamo fatto un trattamento termale qualche giorno prima. In seguito ha lasciato un messaggio telefonico, dicendo quanto si era divertita.

Coccolati, lo chiamava.

In paradiso.

“Guida con prudenza”, gridò mio padre mentre se ne andava.

Al suo Mario Andretti.

Ha eseguito il segnale di stop. Così diceva il rapporto della polizia.

Si era fermata per lasciare qualcosa e si stava affrettando per il suo prossimo appuntamento.

Doveva essere persa nei suoi pensieri. Doveva non averlo nemmeno visto.

La sua auto è stata investita sul lato del guidatore da un automobilista che viaggiava ad almeno 40 mph.

Probabilmente non ha sentito niente. È successo tutto troppo in fretta.

Sono sicuro che Nicola potrebbe spiegare la pura fisica di perdere la vita in una grandinata di metallo e vetro che si frantuma. Le due auto sono finite su un boschetto di alberi fuori strada.

Altre persone si sono fermate. strillarono le sirene.

Mia madre era morta.

Non l’ho più vista dopo. Non sono andato all’ospedale o all’obitorio.

Jean aveva sopportato abbastanza.

Successivamente hanno rimosso il segnale di stop all’incrocio, inserito un semaforo.

Sono tornato a casa dalla Cina. Ci siamo riuniti tutti in Florida per salutare nostra madre e decidere cosa fare con nostro padre.

Non poteva vivere da solo, senza di lei come badante, anche se pensava di poterlo fare.

Le mie sorelle hanno esaminato i suoi averi e hanno preso cose che significavano qualcosa, cose che avrebbe voluto che avessero comunque.

Ricordo l’ultima volta che abbiamo parlato. Il giorno prima che morisse.

Stavo per fare una doccia prima di uscire per la notte a Pechino.

Era a casa in Florida, si stava appena alzando.

Ero stato assunto solo di recente dalla redazione estera del giornale e mi hanno inviato un promemoria, dicendo cose che i nuovi capi dicono sempre sui nuovi assunti, blah, blah, blah.

Sapevo quanto a mia madre piacesse ascoltare quel genere di cose, quindi le ho mandato una copia.

Mi ha raccontato che quella mattina portava l’avviso nella borsetta, per mostrarlo a tutti i suoi amici e alle persone che incontrava nei suoi spostamenti quotidiani.

“Mio figlio è un giornalista”, probabilmente direbbe. “Lavora in una terra straniera.”

Quando le hanno restituito i suoi averi, dopo che ci ha lasciato, l’avviso era ancora nella sua borsa.

Nicola trova i ricordi lasciati da sua madre.

La sua poesia.

“I miei occhi sono catturati da un diario spesso, con una copertina in tessuto jeans”, scrive. “Lo apro. Ho letto la prima pagina “Nome: Angela, soggetto: Poesia”.

“Sfogo tra le pagine e scopro che a quel tempo mia madre aveva quindici anni.”

Nel diario trova anche opere del poeta francese Jaques Prévert e del poeta cileno Pablo Neruda, “che stranamente sono i miei due autori preferiti quando parlo di poesie d’amore. Trovo i testi delle canzoni e altre poesie. Ma trovo anche versi che non ho mai letto e cito sicuro che sono stati creati da lei.

Sua madre non gli aveva mai detto niente di tutto questo.

“Perché”, scrive, “rimarrà un segreto per sempre”.

Vediamo le nostre madri in noi stessi, specialmente dopo che se ne sono andate.

E scopriamo che vittorie e risultati che pensavamo fossero solo nostri, cose che pensavamo di aver capito da soli, in realtà provenivano da loro.

E quanto è bello imparare questo.

Nicola impara questa lezione molto più giovane di me.

“Mi sono sempre chiesto da dove provenissero il mio interesse e la mia inclinazione per la poesia”, scrive. “Ora so che la morte di mia madre, caro John, non ha ispirato la mia poesia.

“Mia madre era poesia; la poesia come modo di vivere e amare. Dare tutto senza chiedere indietro. Come un modo per dare un senso alle cose. La sua morte mi ha permesso di vederlo chiaramente. A volte le persone muoiono per ricordarci che le amiamo.

Non è mai stata scritta frase più vera.

“Non mi ha insegnato la poesia con le parole, le lezioni o qualsiasi libro. Ma dedicando la sua vita per garantire ai suoi figli un futuro amorevole e migliore, un futuro che lei non aveva.

E, con ciò, il poeta si rivolge a uno dei suoi ammiratori.

Me.

“Non so se questo risponde alla tua domanda, ma voglio lasciare qualcosa per te, John: una poesia inedita sulla perdita, che spero possa servire a te e ai tuoi cari.”

Quando ti manca qualcuno

vai a guardare le stelle,

per non cercarli nel cielo,

ma trovarli dentro di te.
