POMARICO, Italy — Giovanni Palumbo winces at the memory: a scene that would make anyone proud of their hometown sick to their stomach.

In an old slaughterhouse just outside town, he found Pomarico’s history in ruins.

Tossed away inside plastic bags, like so much trash, were hundreds of thousands of archival documents critical to the town’s understanding of its own past, an era dating back to the 1600s and before.

In 2015, an irate Palumbo waded through cellars where animals once met their fate, his shoes covered in murky standing water, with the rank smell of mold and slime, animal feces and rat carcasses. 

Documents crumbled to the touch. 

He almost fainted.

He was like an archeologist who had stumbled across a foul ancient tomb.

Yet he also knew the importance of what was there.

“The history of a community was in that cellar,” he later wrote. “Without those ragged, threadbare, tattered, crumpled papers, most covered in mold, we would have never been able to reconstruct the stories of the hillside town known as Pomarico.”

Town officials got a piece of his mind. 

It was all a misunderstanding from decades before, they explained. 

Anyway, there wasn’t much that could be done now, was there?

Actually, there was.

Palumbo, now 55, an author and natural historian, offered to set things right.

He called in the historical A-Team, a group of academics and professional records-handlers.  During the day, they worked as teachers, school superintendents, small-town mayors.

On weekends, they did the dirty work of restoring a town’s archives.

Over four long years, the crew slogged through the muck, wearing masks and hazmat suits, salvaging what documents they could.

Those worthy of preservation were the painstakingly reconstructed, with the care and precision of the region’s best document forensics team.

And they did it all for free. 

Not for money, but for history’s sake.

Later, Palumbo co-authored a report on the team’s findings, the exhausting work characterized by a phrase featured on the booklet’s cover:

“From garbage bags to archival shelving: the daring story of the recovery of archival papers one step away from total destruction.”

What he found, salvaged and then made whole again, opened new little-known chapters in Pomarico’s modern history, ones that even the elders did not know.

Giovanni Palumbo had saved a small town’s collective memory.

It’s history.

Even from his youth, Palumbo knew the value to archival documents.

After studying natural history at the University of Bari, he wrote a biography on Giuseppe Camillo Giordano, a fellow Pomarico native whom Palumbo calls one of the most important figures in Italian botanical science in the 19th Century. 

“It was a piece of history that had not yet been told,” he says.

And he needed archival documents as the roadmaps to his story.

Later, in the mid-1990s, after serving as a Pomarico town councilman, he left for Parma, in northern Italy, and Madrid, to serve as chief of the research department for a non-governmental agency studying bird life.

Back home, the town’s historical archives had long been stored in a musty attic in the Palazzo Marchesale, the former home of a ruling family now run by the town. 

They might have been neglected, but they were still largely intact, stored on scaffolding, partially organized, ready to bear their secrets.

They would not be so when he returned.

In year 2000, when Palumbo was away, Pomarico officials moved the archive from what had been its home since the end of World War Two.

Why, and what happened next, is anyone’s guess.

Half of the treasure trove was taken to a crumbling 17th Century building in town known as the Palazzo Sisto, the other half tossed into garbage bags and transported to the former municipal slaughterhouse.

It wasn’t until 2015 that Palumbo became aware of the travesty.

And he was irate. 

Not only was this a cultural sin of the very worst kind, but it was also against Italian law to destroy historic artifacts.

“I remember saying to myself; No, you can’t just throw three centuries worth of history into the garbage like this.”

With the blessing of the town’s public administration office, Palumbo went to work organizing a task force to make things whole.

But whom should he call? 

Who would even consent to this kind of drudgery?

“Only a bunch of crazy people would even try to do something like this,” he recalls. “And luckily, I have crazy friends.”

Palumbo was co-founder of a cultural association dedicated to the memory of botanist Giuseppe Camillo Giordano. The group, started in 2014, specializes in the protection of public and private archives.

He called members — who normally worked as college professors, high school teacher and businessmen during the day — and made his unlikely pitch.

They responded with a resounding yes!

Palumbo’s group soon received the assistance of experts from the University of Bari and the Office of State Archives in nearby Taranto.

Soon, on each weekend, a half dozen insightful professionals began arriving in Pomarico by the carload.

Led by Palumbo, the rescue team made plans, held last-minute seminars on the handling of such damaged documents, along with the acute health hazards.

Then they donned their face masks, latex gloves and hazmat suits.

And they went to work.

Palumbo calls it “beautiful madness.”

The slaughterhouse was dank and moldy with the distinct scent of death.

Now it held not animal carcasses but discarded history.

In the summer, the temperature rose to 100 degrees and workers almost passed out from the heat.

“Every 20 minutes you took off your mask just to breathe,” Palumbo recalls. “It was a terrible sensation.”

At one point, the team was notified of a second document graveyard, well away from the slaughterhouse, where even more documents were dumped.

This newest site was without doors or windows, and workers trudged through six inches of standing water, picking up black bags that dripped with ooze.

Many documents closest to the wet ground were so damaged they had become more paste than paper, and could not be salvaged.

When you worked in the slaughterhouse, on a hunt for a town’s past, you held your breath and said a prayer as to what you might find. 

You picked up bag after dripping black bag and walked out into the sunlight.

It was the fall of 2016.

After the garbage bags were removed from the slaughterhouse, they were carried to the Salviamo l’Archivio, or construction site. 

It was a space on the second floor of the Marquese palace that had been set aside for the new archival center. One room used to house the private chapel of the Marquis Donnaperna, a major 18th Century landowner here.

A large window overlooks a 18th Century former monastery that now serves as Pomarico’s town hall.

Palumbo recalls assessing the scene: Three rooms with salvaged plastic chairs and a wooden table.

At the time, the palace didn’t have electricity, so in the winter workers had to quit at 5 p.m. when the sun set. Before they got lighting, they even whitewashed the walls to conserve what little sunlight filtered in. 

It was like working in a factory sweatshop.

All day, workers arrived with the bags full of damaged documents.

The litany of the rubble dumped onto the floor reads like an Edgar Allen Poe novel:

Mice, rat, dog and fox carcasses, dried bugs, feces, dust, dirt, rusty nails and bolts, shards of broken glass, clumps of moldering paper.

It could have been worse. A fire years before swept through the slaughterhouse spared only two rooms — the ones where the documents had been dumped.

The smell of acidity, mold and humidity as was so bad workers could not remove their masks and hazmat suits, even at the palace construction site.

One after another, the huge plastic bags were emptied and what documents that could be be immediately salvaged were sorted into archival envelopes.

There were critical logs and ancient deeds that included a list of those born in 1887, death certificates from 1891 and a series of passport photos from 1955.

Even the best-preserved papers were loose, disorganized, often crumpled into balls like the first vision of a high school term paper. 

Some people had the thankless job of straightening out the balls of paper, which were then dusted with soft-bristled brushes to remove rusty paper clips and staples.

The work never seemed to end.

As the project progressed, the crew turned their attention to how the documents would be stored.

They consulted professionals to construct metal scaffolding, ten shelves high, that covered several walls, bolted in place in the case of an earthquake.

The document savers weren’t playing around. 

They were doing it right this time.

The crews computerized some 1,100 photographs as well as much of the treasure trove they rescued. 

Of 625,000 damaged documents, they saved an estimated 80% or 500,000 pieces of paper, each one with a story to tell about the history of Pomarico.

By the time they neared completion in 2019, curious townsfolk and tourists began dropping by, with local 8th grade students volunteering to serve as tour guide.

Palumbo had helped create something special:

A truly modern archive, “not only a container of documents and a place of memory, but also a living space of culture and sharing.”

Giovanni Palumbo wears turquoise-colored framed glasses, shorts and sneakers, looking relaxed as he sits at a desk in the town’s expansive new archive rooms.

He picks up a parchment folder containing church records from 1792. 

The folder is white, well made, with designs on the jacket. Then he shows the folder that came out of the garbage bag. It is dirty, moldy, crumbling.

The before and after images are astounding.

He flips through the documents inside. Some were crumbling at the edges before restorers made them whole again, full-sized, fleshing them out like using putty to connect broken tiles. 

On one page, a former monk writes in a florid swirl of letters. 

He had served at a church known as the Pio Monte die Morti, a name derived from a practice each November when a dowry was drawn by lottery.

Each year, the dowery benefitted an unmarried woman, “to make her attractive and guarantee her marriage,” Palumbo explains. 

“Without marriage, unmarried women were thought to be in danger of becoming prostitutes or insane.”

The “Register of Pio Monte di Morti” contains an alphabetized catalogue of the year 1792 in Pomarico, including which noblemen owned what land, who his neighbors were, why he was important.

He flips the pages, and whispers, “all of this was almost lost.”

There is another, more modern, finding in the rescued papers.

In the 1930s, Benito Mussolini’s fascist government sent numerous anarchists, communists, socialists, revolutionaries and so-called criminals to small towns in Southern Italy to be warehoused and watched.

The most famous was the communist Carlo Levi, banished to the town of Aliano, who later wrote a book, “Christ Stopped at Eboli,” that exposed the terrible conditions endured by Southern Italians while their northern cousins flourished.

Records show that Pomarico was also home to political refugees from the fascist regime. One, Emilio Liparoti, spent years here, and decades later returned for visits.

The younger generation never knew his connection to the town, where he finally died, this tall man with a transistor radio held to his ears.

Now they know.

Thanks to the archives preserved by Giovanni Palumbo and his team.

Palumbo recalls the first time he walked into the archives after all the work was finally done, after the professionals packed their bags and went went, leaving Pomarico to enjoy its historical treasure trove.

He thought back to the filth and stench of that old slaughterhouse and then looked at the rows of documents, now preserved for future generations.

And he began to cry.

“We did it,” he told himself. 

“Even though we were crazy to try, we did it.”

POMARICO, Italia — Giovanni Palumbo sussulta al ricordo: una scena che potrebbe far venire la nausea a chiunque sia orgoglioso della propria città natale.

In un vecchio mattatoio appena fuori città, ha trovato la storia di Pomarico in rovina.

Gettati via all’interno di sacchetti di plastica, come tanta spazzatura, c’erano centinaia di migliaia di documenti d’archivio fondamentali per la comprensione della storia della città e del proprio passato, un’epoca che risale al 1600 e prima.

Nel 2015, un Palumbo arrabbiato ha attraversato stanze simili a cantine dove un tempo gli animali incontravano il loro destino, le sue scarpe coperte di acqua torbida stagnante, con l’odore rancido di muffa e melma, feci di animali e carcasse di topo.

Documenti che si sbriciolavano al tatto.

È quasi svenuto.

Era come un archeologo che si fosse imbattuto in una sporca tomba antica.

Eppure, conosceva anche l’importanza di quello che c’era.

“In quella cantina c’era la storia di una comunità”, scriverà poi. “Senza quelle carte sfilacciate, logore, sbrindellate, sgualcite, per lo più ricoperte di muffa, non saremmo mai riusciti a ricostruire le storie del paese collinare detto Pomarico”.

I funzionari e gli amministratori della città hanno avuto un pezzo della sua mente.

È stato tutto un malinteso di decenni prima, hanno spiegato. Comunque, non c’era molto che si potesse fare adesso, vero?

In realtà, c’era.

Palumbo, ora 55 enne, scrittore e esperto di storia naturale, si è offerto di sistemare le cose.

Ha chiamato lo storico A-Team, un gruppo di amici, e tra questi accademici e gestori archivisti professionisti.

Per quattro lunghi anni, l’equipaggio si è trascinato nel fango, indossando maschere e tute integrali, recuperando tutti i documenti che potevano.

Quelli degni di conservazione sono stati quelli restaurati minuziosamente, con la cura e la precisione del miglior team documentale forense della regione.

E hanno fatto tutto gratis.

Non per soldi, ma per amore della storia.

Successivamente, Palumbo è stato coautore di un rapporto sui risultati del team, il lavoro estenuante caratterizzato da una frase presente sulla copertina del libretto:

“Dai sacchi della spazzatura agli scaffali archivistici: l’audace storia del recupero delle carte d’archivio a un passo dalla distruzione totale.”

Ciò che ha trovato, recuperato e poi ricomposto, ha aperto nuovi capitoli poco conosciuti della storia moderna di Pomarico, che nemmeno gli anziani conoscevano.

Giovanni Palumbo e il suo gruppo di amici avevano salvato la memoria collettiva di un piccolo paese.

La sua storia.

Fin dalla sua giovinezza, Palumbo conosceva il valore dei documenti d’archivio.

Dopo aver studiato scienze naturali all’Università di Bari, ha scritto una biografia su Giuseppe Camillo Giordano, un concittadino originario di Pomarico che Palumbo definisce una delle figure più importanti della scienza botanica italiana dell’Ottocento.

“Era un pezzo di storia che non era ancora stato raccontato”, dice.

E aveva bisogno di documenti d’archivio come roadmap per la sua storia.

Successivamente, a metà degli anni ’90, dopo essere stato assessore comunale di Pomarico, è partito per Parma, nel nord Italia, e Madrid, come capo del dipartimento di ricerca di un’agenzia non governativa che studia l’avifauna.

Tornato a casa, l’archivio storico della città era da tempo conservato in un ammuffito sottotetto di Palazzo Marchese, antica dimora di una famiglia regnante ora gestita dal comune.

Potrebbero essere stati trascurati, ma erano ancora in gran parte intatti, immagazzinati su impalcature, parzialmente organizzati, pronti a custodire i loro segreti.

Non sarebbero stati così al suo ritorno.

Nel 2001, quando Palumbo era assente, i funzionari e gli amministratori di Pomarico trasferirono l’archivio da quella che era stata la sua sede dalla fine della seconda guerra mondiale.

Perché, e cosa è successo dopo, nessuno lo sa.

Metà del tesoro è stata portata in un fatiscente edificio del XVII secolo in città noto come Palazzo Sisto, l’altra metà gettata nei sacchi della spazzatura e trasportata all’ex mattatoio comunale.

Non è stato fino al 2015 che Palumbo è venuto a conoscenza della parodia.

Ed era arrabbiato.

Non solo questo era un peccato culturale della peggior specie, ma era anche contro la legge italiana distruggere documenti storici.

“Ricordo di aver detto a me stesso; No, non puoi semplicemente gettare nella spazzatura tre secoli di storia in questo modo.

Con la benedizione dell’ufficio della pubblica amministrazione della città, Palumbo si è messo al lavoro organizzando una task force per sistemare le cose.

Ma chi dovrebbe chiamare?

Chi acconsentirebbe anche solo a questo tipo di fatica?

“Solo un gruppo di pazzi proverebbe a fare qualcosa del genere”, ricorda. “E fortunatamente ho amici pazzi.”

Palumbo è stato cofondatore di un’associazione culturale dedicata alla memoria del botanico Giuseppe Camillo Giordano. Il gruppo, nato nel 2014, è specializzato nella tutela di archivi pubblici e privati.

Ha chiamato i membri – che normalmente lavoravano come professori universitari, insegnanti di scuola superiore, e uomini di cultura durante il giorno – e ha fatto la sua improbabile presentazione.

Tutti hanno risposto con un clamoroso sì!

Il gruppo di Palumbo ha presto ricevuto l’assistenza di un team di esperti dell’Università di Bari e dell’Archivio di Stato della vicina Taranto.

Ben presto, ogni fine settimana, una mezza dozzina di studenti, futuri professionisti perspicaci, cominciarono ad arrivare a Pomarico a vagoni.

Guidata da Palumbo, la squadra di soccorso ha fatto piani, ha tenuto seminari dell’ultimo minuto sulla gestione di tali documenti danneggiati, insieme ai gravi rischi per la salute.

Quindi hanno indossato le loro maschere per il viso, guanti in lattice e tute integrali.

E sono andati a lavorare.

Palumbo la chiama “bella follia”.

Il mattatoio era umido e ammuffito con un distinto odore di morte.

In estate, la temperatura è salita a più di 40 gradi e gli operatori sono quasi svenuti per il caldo.

“Ogni 20 minuti dovevi toglierti la maschera solo per respirare”, ricorda Palumbo. “È stata una sensazione terribile.”

Ad un certo punto, la squadra è stata informata di un secondo cimitero di documenti, ben lontano dal mattatoio, dove sono stati scaricati ancora più documenti.

Questo nuovo sito era senza porte o finestre e gli operai arrancavano attraverso sei pollici di acqua stagnante, raccogliendo sacchi neri che gocciolavano di melma.

Molti documenti più vicini al terreno bagnato erano così danneggiati da essere diventati più pasta che carta e non potevano essere recuperati.

Quando lavoravi al mattatoio, alla ricerca del passato di una città, trattenevi il respiro e pregavi chiedendoti cosa avresti potuto trovare.

Hai raccolto la borsa dopo aver gocciolato la borsa nera e sei uscito alla luce del sole.

Era l’autunno del 2016.

Dopo che i sacchi della spazzatura sono stati rimossi dal mattatoio, sono stati portati nello spazio dedicato a “Salviamo l’Archivio”, o cantiere.

Era uno spazio al secondo piano del palazzo dei Marchesi che era stato destinato al nuovo centro archivistico.

Palumbo ricorda di aver valutato la scena: tre stanze con alcune sedie di plastica di recupero e un tavolo di legno.

A quel tempo il palazzo non aveva elettricità, quindi in inverno gli operatori volontari dovevano uscire alle 17:00. quando il sole tramontava. Prima che alla fine ottenessero l’illuminazione, hanno persino imbiancato le pareti per conservare quel poco di luce solare che filtrava.

Era come lavorare in una fabbrica sfruttatrice.

Per tutto il giorno gli operai sono arrivati ​​con i sacchi pieni di documenti danneggiati.

La litania delle macerie gettate sul pavimento suona come un romanzo di Edgar Allen Poe:

Carcasse di topi e ratti, insetti secchi, feci, polvere, sporcizia, chiodi e bulloni arrugginiti, schegge di vetro rotto, ciuffi di carta ammuffita.

L’odore di acidità, muffa e umidità era così cattivo che i lavoratori non potevano togliersi le maschere e le tute integrali, nemmeno nel cantiere del palazzo.

Uno dopo l’altro, gli enormi sacchetti di plastica sono stati svuotati e i documenti che potevano essere immediatamente recuperati sono stati smistati in buste d’archivio.

Anche i fogli meglio conservati erano sciolti, disorganizzati, spesso appallottolati come la prima visione di una tesina del liceo.

Alcune persone hanno avuto l’ingrato compito di raddrizzare le palline di carta, che sono state poi spolverate con spazzole a setole morbide per rimuovere graffette e punti metallici arrugginiti.

Il lavoro sembrava non finire mai.

Con il progredire del progetto, le squadre hanno rivolto la loro attenzione a come i documenti recuperati sarebbero stati archiviati.

Hanno consultato professionisti per costruire impalcature metalliche, alte dieci ripiani, che coprissero diverse pareti, imbullonate in posizione in caso di terremoto.

I restauratori di documenti non stavano giocando.

Lo stavano facendo bene questa volta.

Gli equipaggi hanno anche computerizzato circa 1.100 fotografie e gran parte del tesoro che hanno salvato.

Su circa 625.000 documenti danneggiati si è risparmiato circa l’80% ovvero 500.000 pezzi di carta, ognuno con una storia da raccontare sulla storia di Pomarico.

Quando si sono avvicinati al completamento nel 2019, cittadini e turisti curiosi hanno iniziato a passare, con studenti locali dell’ottavo anno (la “terza media” in Italia) che si sono offerti volontari come guida turistica.

Palumbo aveva contribuito a creare qualcosa di speciale:

Un archivio davvero moderno, “non solo contenitore di documenti e luogo della memoria, ma anche spazio vivo di cultura e condivisione”.

Indossa occhiali con montatura color turchese, pantaloncini e scarpe da ginnastica, sembra rilassato mentre siede a una scrivania nelle nuove ampie sale d’archivio della città.

Prende una cartella di pergamena contenente documenti ecclesiastici del 1792, ma di proprietà del Comune di Pomarico, come tutti gli altri documenti prodotti e conservati negli spazi dedicati all’Archivio storico comunale.

La cartellina è bianca, ben fatta, con disegni sulla giacca. Poi mostra la cartella che è uscita dal sacco della spazzatura. È sporco, ammuffito, fatiscente.

Le immagini prima e dopo sono sbalorditive.

Sfoglia i documenti all’interno. Alcuni si stavano sgretolando ai bordi prima che i restauratori li rendessero di nuovo interi, a grandezza naturale, rimpolpandoli come usando lo stucco per unire le piastrelle rotte.

Su una pagina, un ex frate scrive in un florido vortice di lettere.

Il documento era stato utilizzato in una chiesa privata, conosciuta come il Pio Monte die Morti, un nome derivato da una pratica ogni novembre quando una dote veniva estratta dalla lotteria.

Ogni anno la dote andava a beneficio di una donna nubile, «per renderla attraente e garantirle il matrimonio», spiega Palumbo.

“Senza matrimonio, a quel tempo, si pensava che le donne non sposate corressero il rischio di diventare prostitute o pazze (e di fatto, non avendo un ruolo sociale compiuto, in una società maschilista, venivano trascurate o costrette a circostanze tali da farle diventare prostitute o folli!)”.

Il “Registro del Pio Monte di Morti” contiene un catalogo alfabetico dell’anno 1792 a Pomarico, comprendente quali nobili e persone possedevano quale terra, chi erano i suoi vicini, perché era importante.

Sfoglia le pagine e sussurra: “tutto questo era quasi perduto”.

C’è un’altra scoperta, più moderna, nei documenti recuperati.

Negli anni ’30, il governo fascista di Benito Mussolini inviò numerosi anarchici, comunisti, socialisti, rivoluzionari e cosiddetti criminali nelle piccole città del Sud Italia per essere allontanati dalle città e sorvegliati.

Il più famoso fu il comunista Carlo Levi, esiliato nella città di Aliano, che in seguito scrisse un libro, “Cristo si è fermato a Eboli”, che esponeva le terribili condizioni subite dagli italiani meridionali mentre prosperavano i loro cugini settentrionali.

Dai registri risulta che Pomarico ospitò anche profughi politici del regime fascista e detenuti comuni ritenuti pericolosi. Uno, Emilio Liparoti, trascorse anni qui e si sentì accolto come a casa propria e trascorse a Pomarico il resto della sua vita.

La generazione più giovane non ha mai conosciuto il suo legame con la città, dove alla fine è morto, quest’uomo alto con una radio a transistor appoggiata alle orecchie.

Ora lo sanno.

Grazie agli archivi conservati da Giovanni e dal suo team.

Palumbo ricorda la prima volta che è entrato negli archivi dopo che tutto il lavoro era finalmente terminato, dopo che i professionisti avevano fatto le valigie e se ne erano andati, lasciando Pomarico a godersi il suo tesoro storico.

Ripensò alla sporcizia e al fetore di quel vecchio mattatoio e poi guardò le file di documenti, ora conservati per le generazioni future.

E cominciò a piangere.

“Ce l’abbiamo fatta”, si disse.

“Anche noi pensavamo di essere pazzi a provarci, ma ce l’abbiamo fatta”.
