POMARICO, Italy — For Carmela Salvati, her husband’s stylized vision of the past is everywhere in the expansive first-floor apartment where the couple lived together for half a century.

Both big and small, Gennaro Scandiffio’s paintings hang along the main hallway, in the bedrooms and the kitchen, many detailing a quaint workingman’s lifestyle that is fast disappearing in this isolated Southern Italian hill town. 

Every space, it seems, is covered, all the work arranged just so, with the practiced eye of a life-long illustrator who appreciated art and knew how to create it.

There doesn’t seem to be enough room to hold all of the pieces, and there isn’t; many are tucked away in closets and drawers. A copy of a part of “The Battle of San Romano” by Italian muralist Paolo Uccello that hangs in the Uffizi in Florence, covers an entire living room wall.

The paintings, and the memories they evoke, bring Salvati both comfort and pain.

Gennaro died suddenly in June 2023, following a long life as a visionary illustrator and graphic artist who taught himself to paint without schooling or instruction of any kind. 

He began creating images as a young boy and his first commissioned work was produced when he was just 15 — an outdoor religious mural at a nearby church.

After that, he never stopped. He kept working right up to his death at age 77.

While months have passed since Gennaro left her, his widow can still see him sitting there at his regular spot at the small kitchen table, where the very best light for drawing and for thinking comes in the early morning hours. 

In her mind, he’s there, quiet and pensive, a sketchbook before him, an ash tray for his ever-present cigarette there by his side.

He is an artist at work, at peace.

The office just across the hall from the kitchen served as Gennaro’s painting studio.

From the window, you can see the expansive country he once painted and the cemetery where he now rests.

There, on the easel, sits his last, unfinished, work, a troubled musician at his piano. The multi-colored brushes are there by the side, rich colors of blue and orange and red. 

The brushes still look wet to the touch, as though the painter has just stepped away and will soon be back.

But Carmela Salvati knows it cannot be.

And so she is resigned to inhabit the past, like her husband always did. 

It’s in the past where her Gennaro is still alive and thriving in his passion to create art — always thinking about how he is going to next represent his singular vision of a town filled with colorful, hard-working people who no longer exist.

On a recent morning, Carmela sits a the kitchen table, gazing across at the space that once held the love of her life, one that is empty now.

“He was always there,” she says, “working from morning to night. It was stronger than him, to paint.”

As the wife of a man committed to his art at any cost, Carmela knows her husband loved her in his own quiet and intense way. But she always knew that she had to share him with his art.

And now the art is all that is left.

Gennaro’s body of work captures a Pomarico of the past. 

Over his lifetime, he watched as donkeys and horses gave way to tractors and cars. He saw how craftsmen such as the basket weavers and shoemakers maker were dying off. 

And so he set out to capture their productive moments, creating their products, in a series that now hangs in the community’s museum of rural life.

When he felt particularly creative, Gennaro experimented with his art.

Some paintings in his personal gallery show influence by such masters as Pablo Picasso and Salvatore Dali. But Gennaro always gave his interpretations a Southern Italian flourish. 

His work features wooden clothespins wrapped around tree trunks and an apple tree sprouting from the head of a farmer.

He always painted with Pomarico in mind.

Nowadays, many town residents have at least one of Gennaro’s pieces hanging on their wall. The drawings, large canvases and paintings depict how their ancestors once dressed, how they went about their lives before modernity dawned here.

Through his paintings and research, Gennaro offered a history lesson in all that is gone.

Says his only-daughter Mariella, “Dad always loved what was no longer there.”

And now Gennaro is gone as well.

He was raised by a single parent in Pomarico, this man whose art  would one day capture a community and its past.

Gennaro’s father died two months before he was born, and so the boy lived with his mother, Marietta, who had no choice but play the role of both parents.

She was a strong woman who wanted her only son to get a good education.

She wanted him to become a surveyor.

But it was to become a battle of wills with a young man determined to set his own course as an artist. “He was always rebellious,” Mariella recalls.

Even as a young boy, Gennaro had shown talent as a painter. He wanted to attend art school, but his mother did not want her son to be poor. She despised the thought of him relying on the fancy of others to make his living.

She sent him to Naples, where he studied at the Salesian mission and later studied at one of the most important schools in Salerno.

His life had turned away from art, for now.

Then a wonderful thing happened to this frustrated painter, as though St. Michael, the patron saint and protector of Pomarico, wanted to present him a gift.

One evening, while strolling along the Via Roma, Pomarico’s main commercial street, Gennaro looked up to a balcony above.

And he saw inspiration, the woman who was to become his wife.

As Mariella recalls it, Carmela’s family lived in an upper-floor apartment and she was on the balcony, taking in a warm evening.

The two must have talked, at first from a distance, her parents never far away. “That’s how it worked in the south,” Mariella says.

Right away, Carmela recognized something in Gennaro.

“He was a good man,” she recalls. “He was a lovely man.”

When they married, Gennaro was 26, his new bride just 18.

He called her Carmelina.

For three years, the young couple moved to the far-north city of Turin, where Gennaro worked on the assembly line at the Fiat automobile plant. 

“He always talked about how alienating that job was,” Mariella said.

And so he came home to Pomarico and Southern Italy to pursue that dream that was his and his alone. 

When the couple and their newborn daughter returned in 1973, they moved into the apartment where Carmela still lives today.

As it turned out, Carmela was headstrong as Gennaro’s own mother. 

“My Mom was strong, and proud,” Mariella recalls. “She made me study hard so I could graduate.”

Mariella later earned her legal degree and today is a practicing lawyer in Bari. 

Carmela also gave Gennaro the space to be himself. To paint. To work on what was important to him.

As a girl, Mariella recalls sitting on the couch in the artist’s studio as her father worked quietly. She was curious about his passion. 

He showed her how to move a brush across the canvas. “I can still smell the oil paints in my nose,” she says now.

She recalls her father as a consummate reader. Books, magazines, newspapers. He taught her the love of comic books such as Mickey Mouse and the works of Jacovitti. 

Gennaro loved the cinema. Every night, he watched movies and listened to music. He was one the first in Pomarico to buy 45 r.p.m. records. Not only Italian singers, but the Beatles, Bob Dillan, Elvis Presley.

Mariella recalls two seemingly conflicting sides to her father: He loved the unconventional, but remained a student of tradition, of the world as it was.

“He didn’t like everything that belonged to the modern world,” she recalls. “He never had a cell phone. He refused to understand how it worked.”

He also scorned the Internet, she said. 

“It was a world in which he never recognized himself.”

Over the years, Gennaro held exhibitions of his work in Pomarico. 

In 1986, he began a collaboration with Pomarico historian Pietro Varuolo.

He later added two more books, one on musician Antonio Vivaldi, whose grandfather was born in Pomarico, and a second on St. Michael, the village’s patron saint. 

In 2022, the year before his death, he published a collection of paintings dedicated to Pomarico’s peasant civilization, including a dictionary of the local dialect.

But as his mother once predicted, art never paid the bills.

To earn a living, Gennaro took a job in a yarn factory, which later went bankrupt. He later worked at the municipal library, the Superintendency of Fine Arts in Matera and, finally at the Court of Matera.

There might not have been steady work, but there was aways his art.

After his death, the local historical society, with whom Gennaro had worked for decades, released a statement that read, “We who have known you feel richer. Have a good trip GENNARO. Now you will paint in heaven.”

Gennaro’s final, still unfinished work still sits on the easel where he last left it.

The painting shows an aging musician, dressed in a topcoat, slouched before his piano, his head lying on the keyboard. He has passed out. An empty bottle of alcohol sits on the piano, another in his hand.

Not all of Gennaro’s visions were carefree. There was pain in his work.

Gennaro did not disdain drinking; he enjoyed a good glass of whisky, but was not a sociable man known to frequent the bars in town.

He was reserved. He knew many people — everyone in town knew Gennaro Scandiffio — but he was selective in those he chose as friends. He preferred to be home his his work, and his Carmela.

For his daughter Mariella, her father’s last work carries another subtler message.

“To me, it’s a sense of tiredness and finality.”

Perhaps the vision of an artist who could sense that the end might be near.

On this sunny summer morning, Carmela sits at the kitchen table, thumbing through one of her husband’s old notebooks. Inside are drawings, notes and recipes, all written out in Pomarico’s ancient dialect. 

The handwriting is neat; the notebook organized, the recipes listed in alphabetical order.

Carmela recalls that her husband rarely consulted her on his art. But she often looked over his shoulder, offering advice when she thought the color was wrong, or she saw a small detail she wanted to correct.

But he was always working. Even toward the end, when he became more tired and preferred to remain more often in bed, he kept his notebook on his lap.

“What makes you do this every day?” she would ask, and he would talk about this deadline or that, perhaps created only by himself.

“My father’s soul was the best part of all,” Mariella remembers. “Surely I have lost the best part of me.”

Now that he’s gone, Mariella realizes this about her father: He seemed disinterested in modern life because he was pouring his energies into his particular vision of the past.

“He was drawing all the time. He lived for his art,” she said. “He was just a shy man who never liked to show off. Now that he’s gone, his legacy just seems so immense.”

Mariella sees how much her mother is struggling without her life partner. “She has had to learn how to do everything,” she says. “She seems lost. Dad was her everything.”

Not too long ago, Carmela was awake in the middle of the night. She was restless and could not sleep. That’s when she heard the voice, summoning her from another room.

“Carmelina,” it called.

And then it stopped. It was gone. But Gennaro’s work remains.

It’s everywhere. It calls to her as well.

POMARICO, Italia — Per Carmela Salvati, la visione stilizzata del passato del marito è ovunque nell’ampio appartamento al primo piano dove la coppia ha vissuto insieme per mezzo secolo.

Grandi e piccoli, i dipinti di Gennaro Scandiffio sono appesi lungo il corridoio principale, nelle camere da letto e nella cucina, molti dei quali descrivono in dettaglio lo stile di vita di un operaio pittoresco che sta rapidamente scomparendo in questa isolata cittadina collinare dell’Italia meridionale.

Ogni spazio, a quanto pare, è coperto, tutto il lavoro disposto proprio così, con l’occhio esperto di un illustratore di lunga data che apprezzava l’arte e sapeva come crearla.

Non sembra esserci abbastanza spazio per contenere tutti i pezzi, e non c’è; molti sono nascosti in armadi e cassetti. Una copia di una parte de “La battaglia di San Romano” del muralista italiano Paolo Uccello che è appesa agli Uffizi di Firenze, copre un’intera parete del soggiorno.

I dipinti e i ricordi che evocano portano a Salvati conforto e dolore.

Gennaro è morto improvvisamente nel giugno 2023, dopo una lunga vita di illustratore e grafico visionario che ha imparato a dipingere da solo senza istruzione o istruzione di alcun tipo.

Ha iniziato a creare immagini da ragazzo e il suo primo lavoro su commissione è stato prodotto quando aveva solo 15 anni: un murale religioso all’aperto in una chiesa vicina.

Dopo di che non si è più fermato. Ha continuato a lavorare fino alla sua morte all’età di 77 anni.

Sono passati mesi da quando Gennaro l’ha lasciata, la sua vedova lo vede ancora seduto al suo posto abituale al tavolino della cucina, dove la luce migliore per disegnare e per pensare arriva nelle prime ore del mattino.

Nella sua mente, lui è lì, silenzioso e pensieroso, un album da disegno davanti a lui, un posacenere per la sua sigaretta sempre presente accanto a lui.

È un artista al lavoro, in pace.

L’ufficio proprio di fronte alla cucina fungeva da studio di pittura di Gennaro.

Dalla finestra si vede l’ampia campagna da lui dipinta e il cimitero dove ora riposa.

Lì, sul cavalletto, siede la sua ultima opera incompiuta, un musicista travagliato al suo pianoforte. I pennelli multicolori sono lì accanto, ricchi colori di blu, arancione e rosso.

I pennelli sembrano ancora bagnati al tatto, come se il pittore si fosse appena allontanato e presto tornerà.

Ma Carmela Salvati sa che non può essere.
E così si è rassegnata ad abitare il passato, come ha sempre fatto suo marito.

È nel passato che il suo Gennaro è ancora vivo e fiorente nella sua passione per la creazione di arte, pensando sempre a come rappresenterà la sua visione singolare di una città piena di persone colorate e laboriose che non esistono più.

Una mattina recente, Carmela è seduta al tavolo della cucina, fissando lo spazio che un tempo ospitava l’amore della sua vita, uno spazio che ora è vuoto.

“Era sempre lì”, dice, “a lavorare dalla mattina alla sera. Era più forte di lui, dipingere”.

In quanto moglie di un uomo dedito alla sua arte ad ogni costo, Carmela sa che suo marito l’amava nel suo modo tranquillo e intenso. Ma ha sempre saputo che doveva condividerlo con la sua arte.

E ora l’arte è tutto ciò che resta.

Il corpus di opere di Gennaro cattura un Pomarico del passato.

Nel corso della sua vita, ha visto asini e cavalli lasciare il posto a trattori e automobili. Ha visto come gli artigiani come i tessitori di cesti e i calzolai stavano morendo.

E così ha deciso di catturare i loro momenti produttivi, creando i loro prodotti, in una serie che ora è esposta nel museo della vita rurale della comunità.

Quando si sentiva particolarmente creativo, Gennaro sperimentava con la sua arte.
Alcuni dipinti nella sua galleria personale mostrano l’influenza di maestri come Pablo Picasso e Salvatore Dalì. Ma Gennaro ha sempre dato alle sue interpretazioni un fiorire dell’Italia meridionale.

Il suo lavoro presenta mollette di legno avvolte attorno a tronchi d’albero e un melo spuntato dalla testa di un contadino.

Ha sempre dipinto pensando a Pomarico.
Al giorno d’oggi, molti abitanti della città hanno almeno un’opera di Gennaro appesa al muro. 

I disegni, le grandi tele e i dipinti raffigurano come si vestivano i loro antenati, come vivevano prima che qui nascesse la modernità.

Attraverso i suoi dipinti e le sue ricerche, Gennaro ha offerto una lezione di storia a tutto ciò che è andato.

Racconta la sua unica figlia Mariella: “Papà ha sempre amato quello che non c’era più”.
E ora anche Gennaro se n’è andato.

È stato cresciuto da un genitore single a Pomarico, quest’uomo la cui arte un giorno avrebbe catturato una comunità e il suo passato.

Il padre di Gennaro morì due mesi prima della sua nascita, e così il ragazzo visse con sua madre, Marietta, che non ebbe altra scelta che interpretare il ruolo di entrambi i genitori.

Era una donna forte che voleva che il suo unico figlio ricevesse una buona istruzione.
Voleva che diventasse un geometra.

Ma doveva diventare una battaglia di volontà con un giovane determinato a stabilire la propria strada come artista. “Era sempre ribelle”, ricorda Mariella.

Fin da ragazzo, Gennaro aveva mostrato talento come pittore. Voleva frequentare la scuola d’arte, ma sua madre non voleva che suo figlio fosse povero. 

Disprezzava l’idea che lui facesse affidamento sulla fantasia degli altri per guadagnarsi da vivere.

Lo mandò a Napoli, dove studiò presso la missione salesiana e successivamente studiò in una delle scuole più importanti di Salerno.
La sua vita si era allontanata dall’arte, per ora.

Poi a questo frustrato pittore accadde una cosa meravigliosa, come se San Michele, patrono e protettore di Pomarico, volesse fargli un dono.

Una sera, mentre passeggiava lungo Via Roma, la principale via commerciale di Pomarico, Gennaro alzò lo sguardo su un balcone.

E vide l’ispirazione, la donna che sarebbe diventata sua moglie.

Come ricorda Mariella, la famiglia di Carmela abitava in un appartamento al piano superiore e lei era sul balcone a godersi una serata tiepida.

I due devono aver parlato, dapprima a distanza, i suoi genitori mai lontani. “È così che funzionavo al sud”, dice Mariella.

Carmela riconobbe subito qualcosa in Gennaro.

“Era un brav’uomo”, ricorda. “Era un uomo adorabile.”

Quando si sono sposati, Gennaro aveva 26 anni, la sua sposa appena 18.
La chiamava Carmelina.

Per tre anni, la giovane coppia si è trasferita nell’estremo nord di Torino, dove Gennaro ha lavorato alla catena di montaggio dello stabilimento automobilistico Fiat.

“Parlava sempre di quanto fosse alienante quel lavoro”, ha detto Mariella.

E così è tornato a casa a Pomarico e nel Sud Italia per inseguire quel sogno che era suo e solo suo.

Quando la coppia e la loro figlia appena nata tornarono nel 1973, si trasferirono nell’appartamento dove vive ancora oggi Carmela.

Come si è scoperto, Carmela era testarda come la madre di Gennaro.

“Mia mamma era forte e orgogliosa”, ricorda Mariella. “Mi ha fatto studiare sodo per potermi laureare”.

Mariella ha successivamente conseguito la laurea in giurisprudenza e oggi esercita la professione di avvocato a Bari.

Carmela ha anche dato a Gennaro lo spazio per essere se stesso. Dipingere. Per lavorare su ciò che era importante per lui.

Da ragazza, Mariella ricorda di essersi seduta sul divano nello studio dell’artista mentre suo padre lavorava tranquillo. Era curiosa della sua passione.

Le mostrò come muovere un pennello sulla tela. “Sento ancora l’odore dei colori ad olio nel mio naso”, dice ora.

Ricorda suo padre come un lettore consumato. Libri, riviste, giornali. Le ha insegnato l’amore per i fumetti come Topolino e le opere di Jacovitti.

Gennaro amava il cinema. Ogni sera guardava film e ascoltava musica. Fu uno dei primi a Pomarico ad acquistare 45 giri. record. Non solo cantanti italiani, ma i Beatles, Bob Dillan, Elvis Presley.

Mariella ricorda a suo padre due lati apparentemente contrastanti: amava il non convenzionale, ma rimaneva uno studioso della tradizione, del mondo così com’era.
“Non gli piaceva tutto ciò che apparteneva al mondo moderno”, ricorda. “Non ha mai avuto un cellulare. Si è rifiutato di capire come funzionasse.”

Ha anche disprezzato Internet, ha detto.

“Era un mondo in cui non si riconosceva mai”.

Nel corso degli anni Gennaro ha tenuto mostre del suo lavoro a Pomarico.

Nel 1986 inizia una collaborazione con lo storico di Pomarico Pietro Varuolo.

In seguito aggiunse altri due libri, uno sul musicista Antonio Vivaldi, il cui nonno era nato a Pomarico, e un secondo su San Michele, patrono del paese.

Nel 2022, l’anno prima della sua morte, pubblica una raccolta di dipinti dedicati alla civiltà contadina di Pomarico, comprensiva di un dizionario del dialetto locale.

Ma come aveva predetto una volta sua madre, l’arte non ha mai pagato i conti.

Per guadagnarsi da vivere, Gennaro ha accettato un lavoro in una fabbrica di filati, poi fallita. Successivamente ha lavorato presso la Biblioteca Comunale, la Soprintendenza alle Belle Arti di Matera e, infine, presso il Tribunale di Matera.

Potrebbe non esserci stato un lavoro fisso, ma c’era sempre la sua arte.

Dopo la sua morte, la società storica locale, con la quale Gennaro aveva collaborato per decenni, ha rilasciato un comunicato che recitava: “Noi che ti abbiamo conosciuto ci sentiamo più ricchi. Buon viaggio GENNARO. Ora dipingerai in paradiso”.

L’ultimo lavoro di Gennaro, ancora incompiuto, si trova ancora sul cavalletto dove l’ha lasciato l’ultima volta.

Il dipinto mostra un musicista anziano, vestito con un soprabito, stravaccato davanti al suo pianoforte, con la testa appoggiata sulla tastiera. È svenuto. Una bottiglia vuota di alcol è sul pianoforte, un’altra nella sua mano.

Non tutte le visioni di Gennaro erano spensierate. C’era dolore nel suo lavoro.

Gennaro non disdegnava il bere; si godeva un buon bicchiere di whisky, ma non era un uomo socievole noto per frequentare i bar della città.

Era riservato. Conosceva molte persone — in paese tutti conoscevano Gennaro Scandiffio — ma era selettivo tra quelli che si sceglieva come amici. Preferiva stare a casa sua, il suo lavoro, e la sua Carmela.

Per sua figlia Mariella, l’ultimo lavoro di suo padre porta un altro messaggio più sottile.
“Per me, è un senso di stanchezza e finalità.”

Forse la visione di un artista che poteva percepire che la fine poteva essere vicina.

In questa assolata mattina d’estate, Carmela è seduta al tavolo della cucina, sfogliando uno dei vecchi quaderni del marito. 

All’interno ci sono disegni, appunti e ricette, tutto scritto nell’antico dialetto di Pomarico.

La calligrafia è ordinata; il quaderno organizzato, le ricette elencate in ordine alfabetico.

Carmela ricorda che suo marito la consultava raramente sulla sua arte. 

Ma spesso si guardava alle spalle, offrendo consigli quando pensava che il colore fosse sbagliato o vedeva un piccolo dettaglio che voleva correggere.

Ma lavorava sempre. Anche verso la fine, quando si stancava di più e preferiva restare più spesso a letto, teneva il taccuino in grembo.

“Cosa ti fa fare questo ogni giorno?” chiedeva lei, e lui parlava di questa o quella scadenza, magari creata solo da lui stesso.

“L’anima di mio padre era la parte migliore di tutte”, ricorda Mariella. “Sicuramente ho perso la parte migliore di me.”

Ora che se n’è andato, Mariella si rende conto di questo di suo padre: sembrava disinteressato alla vita moderna perché stava riversando le sue energie nella sua particolare visione del passato.

“Disegnava tutto il tempo. Viveva per la sua arte”, ha detto. “Era solo un uomo timido a cui non piaceva mettersi in mostra. Ora che se n’è andato, la sua eredità sembra così immensa”.
Mariella vede quanto sua madre stia lottando senza il suo compagno di vita. 

“Ha dovuto imparare a fare tutto”, dice. “Sembra persa. Papà era tutto per lei.

Non molto tempo fa, Carmela era sveglia nel cuore della notte. Era irrequieta e non riusciva a dormire. Fu allora che sentì la voce, che la chiamava da un’altra stanza.

“Carmelina”, ha chiamato.

E poi si è fermato. Era andato. Ma il lavoro di Gennaro resta.

È ovunque. Chiama anche lei.
