ALIANO, Italy — The winding country road delivers us into an otherworldly landscape of crumbling sand and clay, jagged peaks and deep fissures that the political prisoner once banished here likened to something wholly alien, a lunar surface.

Carlo Levi saw both beauty and brutality in this waterless vista of tumbleweeds and gnarled, stunted trees that surrounds the town of Aliano.

He witnessed something parched and somehow tortured, hauntingly deserted. 

It inspired him.

In the 1930s, Mussolini’s fascist government ostracized the Jewish communist intellectual — an author, journalist, painter and doctor — to the remote southern region of Basilicata, then and now among the nation’s poorest places, for his dissident political views.

His prison was the town itself, peopled by uneducated, malaria-ridden yet-resilient peasants deprived of even such basic services as running water or a nourishing diet. 

His local wanderings, always monitored, produced paintings, writings, observations, and eventually a book, Christ Stopped at Eboli, a memoir that exposed the poverty, deprivations and frustrations that endured all across Italy’s southern reaches.

For the years that he languished here, Levi was the Man on the Moon. 

Yet in the end, his investigative reporting caused Italy to finally confront its prejudices, its Southern Problem, its treatment these hardy people whom Mussolini and others viewed as an inferior race.

Now, nearly a century later, his influence on Italy’s so-called Mezzogiorno continues. 

His spirit looms large here in a quiet town that owes much of its identity to the northern Italian intellectual who came, saw, and wrote about these “men without a country.”

His former house preserved as he left it, a museum is dedicated to his life and work.

Levi even chose to be buried here following his death in 1975, an emancipator who envisioned a final resting place among the people whose lives he sought to better.

I came to visit the legacy of this brave man whose expose changed Italian history.

We are a somewhat motley crew, all of us in our 60s, a one-time New York City bus driver who now paints in his spare time, an aging American journalist and a cherubic regional traffic officer.

Mike and Bruno live in Pomarico, the town where my grandfather was born. They have offered to guide me to this place where Levi made his mark, changing in no small way the future of this region that’s home to all our ancestors.

Mike drives his wife’s car just like he once drove his bus, careful to return it in the same condition he found it. Bruno, who happens to be my distant cousin, sits in the passenger seat, the collar of his blue soccer shirt worn up, Italian style, whistling, singing songs to himself, while I ride in the back.

Bruno speaks a musical Italian, his words articulated, his sentences carried in a charming melody, while Mike is quiet, watchful. Bruno, who speaks no English, compliments me on my basic Italian, the fact that I can make myself understood. 

If I get into trouble, stumble with a translation, Mike, who speaks English with a Brooklyn accent, is there to clean things up.

We’re a merry trio as we head out from hilltop Pomarico. Mike likes the backroads and is quick to pull over if he sees something interesting. 

We stop often.

Bruno spends most of his spare time as a photographer, carrying his beloved Canon rig, anxious to record a landscape or stop and capture that old man sitting on the wooden bench, always ready to capture his profile, hear his story.

Once these older men and woman are gone, southern Italy, the land he loves, will lose something soulful and irreplaceable, almost spiritual. 

With my iPhone camera, I too hope to capture the history and charm of this land, and look to Bruno with his experienced eye.

But early on, that eye focuses not only on the landscape but on me as well. 

For hours, I become Bruno’s reluctant model, posing awkwardly, stoop-shouldered, never knowing what to do with my hands, presenting a visage with a wandering left eye, as Bruno cheerfully clicks way.

Ah, yes!

Mike is no help. He’s so camera shy I tease him that he’s no doubt entered into some kind of witness protection program.

We pass long lines of olive trees, cultivated grapes and all kinds of fruit, cicadas buzzing as loudly as a rock concert. The air is hot, the landscape ancient.

At this moment, in the backseat of this car, under the spell of these two men, exploring the land of my distant relatives, there is no place on earth I would rather be.

Once in Aliano, Bruno becomes our personal tour guide. He has compiled a book of historical pictures of this town and its inhabitants.

His wife was born here and he still visits his diminutive mother-in-law in her tiny house that seems stolen from the set of Lord of the Rings. The view from its front door presents a sweeping visage of a jarring unchanged land.

I stoop to one knee for a shot with this aging, sturdy woman, who pours us glasses of cold orange Fanta and talks about the difficulties of life in Aliano.

“But were you happy?” I ask.

“Of course,” she says without hesitation.

If Bruno seems to know everyone here, that’s because he has taken their picture at one time or another. He stops people on the street, sculptors and ex-mayors, introduces them to this American visitor, always ready to brandish his camera and fire away.

His insists that our first stop in Aliano is the cemetery where Levi is buried. In a wooded glade bearing ancient gravestones, we find Levi’s spot, his flat tombstone bearing the small rocks that Bruno explains.

In Jewish culture, he says, bits of bread and stones are customary offerings when visiting a gravesite.

Bruno instructs me to find a rock, any rock. I search until I find one that’s more of a pebble and his camera clicks as I place it on the stone tablet bearing Levi’s name.

“This is such a peaceful place,” I say. “I could stay here longer.”

“Careful,” Mike deadpans. “It’s a cemetery. People never leave here.”

Aliano is quiet, like its graveyard. Everything seems to be closed: the house where Levi once lived, the museum, even the tourist information office.

But Bruno is undeterred, choosing to create his own off-the-cuff tour. We stop and chat with a an animal whisperer, a farmer known for his gentle way raising livestock. “You must not yell,” he says. “You must speak with them softly.”

Downtown, at a place called Bar Centrale, owner Maria Neapolitan Mastrota, serves us a concoction of beer and bitters and talks about Carlo Levi’s legacy here.

“He came here as a cultural elite,” she says, “yet he identified with the poor.”

At one point, as Mike waits in the shade on an afternoon that reaches the high 90s, Bruno and I launch into a madcap tour of Aliano’s abandoned historic district, which Bruno scoffs will soon be torn town to make way for new housing.

We poke our cameras into long-deserted abodes, that seem unchanged over the decades since their last owner left them. We take shots in unison, Bruno suggesting camera angles and little things to notice, a door here, a fireplace there.

Of course, Bruno inevitably turns to camera onto me, imploring me to pose, cheerfully ignoring my discomfort. When he has his shot he pauses and says, in English:

Ah, yes!

Bruno promises to find Aliano’s mayor and, as we descend from town on the dizzying winding track, we stop for lunch at a roadside restaurant. The place is called Il Tenete, famous for its Basilicata cuisine, with seating on an exposed porch cooled by misting sprayers.

And there, sitting with two colleagues, celebrating his birthday, is Aliano mayor Luigi De Lorenzo.

The man himself.

Bruno quickly invites us to join the mayor and we drink red wine with a vegetarian fare, followed by espresso, frozen lemon desert and shots of Amaro Lucano, the region’s distinctive exported liquor.

Fueled by alcohol, I ask the mayor whether he would have freed Carlo Levy if he had been in charge of things back in the day.

Brown-eyed, white-bearded, De Lorenzo doesn’t hesitate.

“Yes, for sure,” he says, perhaps forgetting the ferociousness of Mussolini’s fascist regime, one that might have had other ideas. “I’m a mayor who believes in freedom. I’m not a fascist. I was a socialist for many years.”

We leave the cool confines of the mayor and his cronies, feeling woozy. 

Mike, who has abstained from all alcohol, is back behind the wheel. I joke that he is El Duce of this trip. He makes the trains run on time, always there to hustle Bruno and I as we get lost in some scene.

Like the Fosso del Bersagliere, the chasm that sits just below Aliano, which runs so deep that it’s enveloped in shadows, even at midday. 

It’s the first mystery Levi encounters as he arrives in Aliano, his hands tied, escorted by two expressionless fascist guards, red bands worn around their arms.

He soon tunes into the town’s melancholic sights and sounds, the narrow streets, peasants perched in doorways, the laments of women at the death of one of their own, the spooky witches who work their spells in a place untouched by the outside world.

“An indistinct buzz circles around me in great circles, and beyond is a profound silence,” Levi writes. “I seem to have fallen from the sky, like a stone into a pond.”

We spend the rest of the day on the backroads of Basilicata, wandering the abandoned alleyways of the hill town called Tursi, known as Rabatana by its Muslim invaders eons ago.

Bruno and I never let our cameras rest.

Tursi is also known as the home of poet Albino Pierro, famous for his works in the Lucani dialect and once nominated for the Novel Prize on Literature.

Italy continues to fascinate, both in its near-present and ancient past.

Hot and tired and thirsty, Bruno takes us to the home of of a woodcarver friend, whose wife and daughter greet us like long lost family.

As we lean against the stone wall outside, the daughter serves us numerous glasses of cold water on a tray. Before we leave, the wife hands us three huge peaches for the road.

These are the people Bruno likes to capture on film. Later, we stop and eat the peaches by the roadside, the juice sweet as it runs down our faces.

We end the day at Craco, an entire village abandoned decades ago, sitting desolate on the crown of a sunburned hill, all whitewashed and glowering in the heat, looking like an evil empire on some faraway planet in a Star Wars episode. 

Wilting from the humidity, we trudge back to our air-conditioned car, encountering a young French college student, alone, on a six-month vagabond journey across Europe.

We ogle shamelessly, like cartoon characters, at least I do.

Both men later cluck about the dangers of such a venture, with Bruno that no Italian girl would ever attempt such madness.

I tell both they are thinking like fathers, and not with the carefree hubris of someone so young, someone who only sees adventure, not peril.

As the sun nears the horizon, the air cools and we wind our way back to hill town Pomarico, but not before Bruno insists on taking us to a little-known country fountain.

It’s one of the area’s usually shaded way-points that dates back to a long-ago era when peasant herders moved their goats and and sheep across this landscape.

People like my ancestors.

On the way, we pass one fountain that Mike and I had visited only days before, stooping to slurp the cold water, like thirsty men have done here for centuries.

“That one’s no good,” Bruno announces with a wave of his hand. “Maybe only to wash your car.”

Mike and I make eye contact. We’re anxious to see this special spot Bruno has in mind.

We park the car and walk down a narrow one-lane tarmac road, Bruno singing songs, pausing to photograph this scene and that.

I feel like a boy again, a Tom Sawyer, with these two generous local men, like I might skip rocks across a pond if I encounter one.

We find Bruno’s secluded spigot and, though surrounded by a muddy marsh, the water flows cold and fresh and sweet. I jump through mud that sucks in my feet to my ankles.

But it is worth it. Like being here, so far from home, with these two new friends.

I bend to take my last drink on a long, hot, satisfying day.

As I do, Bruno snaps off a few shots in the fading light.

“Ah, yes!”

BASILICATA GIORNALE: Sulle orme di Carlo Levi con una guida turistica canora

ALIANO, Italia – La tortuosa strada di campagna ci trasporta in un paesaggio ultraterreno di sabbia e argilla che si sgretola, cime frastagliate e profonde fessure che il prigioniero politico una volta bandito qui ha paragonato a qualcosa di completamente alieno, una superficie lunare.

Carlo Levi ha visto sia la bellezza che la brutalità in questo panorama senz’acqua di erbacce e alberi nodosi e rachitici che circonda la città di Aliano.

Ha assistito a qualcosa di arido e in qualche modo torturato, ossessionantemente deserto.

Lo ha ispirato.

Negli anni ’30, il governo fascista di Mussolini ostracì l’intellettuale comunista ebreo – scrittore, giornalista, pittore e medico – nella remota regione meridionale della Basilicata, allora e oggi tra i luoghi più poveri della nazione, per le sue opinioni politiche dissidenti.

La sua prigione era la città stessa, popolata da contadini ignoranti, colpiti dalla malaria ma resilienti, privati ​​anche di servizi basilari come l’acqua corrente o una dieta nutriente.

Il suo spirito si profila in gran parte qui in una tranquilla cittadina che deve gran parte della sua identità all’intellettuale dell’Italia settentrionale che è venuto, ha visto e ha scritto di questi “uomini senza patria”.

La sua ex casa conservata come l’ha lasciata, un museo è dedicato alla sua vita e al suo lavoro.

Levi ha persino scelto di essere sepolto qui dopo la sua morte nel 1975, un emancipatore che immaginava un luogo di riposo finale tra le persone di cui cercava di migliorare la vita.

Sono venuto a visitare l’eredità di quest’uomo coraggioso la cui denuncia ha cambiato la storia italiana.

Siamo un gruppo un po’ eterogeneo, tutti noi sulla sessantina, un ex autista di autobus di New York City che ora dipinge nel tempo libero, un anziano giornalista americano e un cherubino addetto al traffico regionale.

Mike e Bruno vivono a Pomarico, il paese dove è nato mio nonno e dove trascorro l’estate. Si sono offerti di guidarci in questa città in cui Levi ha lasciato il segno, cambiando non poco il futuro di questa regione che ospita tutti i nostri antenati.

Mike guida l’auto di sua moglie proprio come una volta guidava il suo autobus, attento a restituirla nelle stesse condizioni in cui l’ha trovata. Bruno, che guarda caso è un mio lontano cugino, siede sul sedile del passeggero, il colletto della sua maglia da calcio blu consumato, all’italiana, fischiettando, cantando canzoni tra sé, mentre io giro dietro.

Bruno parla un italiano musicale, le sue parole sono articolate, le sue frasi sono portate in una melodia affascinante, mentre Mike è calmo, vigile. Bruno, che non parla inglese, mi fa i complimenti per il mio italiano di base, per il fatto che riesco a farmi capire.

Se mi metto nei guai, inciampo con una traduzione, Mike, che parla inglese con un accento di Brooklyn, è lì per ripulire le cose.

Siamo un allegro trio mentre usciamo dalla collina di Pomarico. A Mike piacciono le strade secondarie ed è pronto ad accostare se vede qualcosa di interessante.

Ci fermiamo spesso.

Bruno trascorre la maggior parte del suo tempo libero come fotografo, portando con sé la sua amata attrezzatura Canon, ansioso di registrare un paesaggio o fermarsi a immortalare quel vecchietto seduto sulla panca di legno, sempre pronto a immortalare il suo profilo, ascoltare la sua storia.

Una volta che questi uomini e donne più anziani se ne saranno andati, l’Italia meridionale, la terra che ama, perderà qualcosa di profondo e insostituibile, quasi spirituale.

Con la fotocamera del mio iPhone, anch’io spero di catturare la storia e il fascino di questa terra, e guardo a Bruno con il suo occhio esperto.

Ma all’inizio quell’occhio si concentra non solo sul paesaggio ma anche su di me.

Per ore, divento il modello riluttante di Bruno, posando goffamente, con le spalle curve, senza mai sapere cosa fare con le mie mani, presentando un volto con un occhio sinistro errante, mentre Bruno fa clic allegramente.

Ah yes!

Mike non è d’aiuto. È così timido con la telecamera che lo prendo in giro dicendo che senza dubbio è entrato in una specie di programma di protezione dei testimoni.

Passiamo lunghe file di ulivi, uva coltivata e ogni tipo di frutta, cicale che ronzano forte come un concerto rock. L’aria è calda, il paesaggio antico.

In questo momento, sul sedile posteriore di questa macchina, sotto l’incantesimo di questi due uomini, esplorando la terra dei miei lontani parenti, non c’è posto sulla terra in cui preferirei essere.

Una volta ad Aliano, Bruno diventa la nostra guida turistica personale. Ha compilato un libro di immagini storiche di questa città e dei suoi abitanti.

Sua moglie è nata qui e fa ancora visita alla sua minuscola suocera nella sua piccola casa che sembra rubata dal set de Il Signore degli Anelli. La vista dalla sua porta d’ingresso presenta un ampio volto di una terra stridente e immutata.

Mi chino su un ginocchio per uno shot con questa donna anziana e robusta, che ci versa bicchieri di Fanta all’arancia fredda e parla delle difficoltà della vita ad Aliano.

“Ma eri felice?” Chiedo.

“Certo”, dice senza esitazione.

Se Bruno sembra conoscere tutti qui, è perché una volta o l’altra ha scattato loro una foto. Ferma la gente per strada, scultori ed ex sindaci, li presenta a questo visitatore americano, sempre pronto a brandire la macchina fotografica e sparare.

Lui insiste che la nostra prima tappa ad Aliano sia il cimitero dove è sepolto Levi. In una radura boscosa con antiche lapidi, troviamo la macchia di Levi, la sua lapide piatta con i piccoli sassi che Bruno spiega.

Nella cultura ebraica, dice, pezzi di pane e pietre sono offerte abituali quando si visita una tomba.

Bruno mi ordina di trovare un sasso, qualsiasi sasso. Cerco finché non ne trovo uno più simile a un ciottolo e la sua macchina fotografica fa clic mentre la posiziono sulla tavoletta di pietra con il nome di Levi.

“Questo è un posto così tranquillo”, dico. “Potrei restare qui più a lungo.”

“Attento”, dice impassibile Mike. “È un cimitero. La gente non se ne va mai da qui.

Aliano è silenzioso, come il suo cimitero. Tutto sembra chiuso: la casa dove un tempo visse Levi, il museo, persino l’ufficio informazioni turistiche.

Ma Bruno è imperterrito, scegliendo di creare il proprio tour improvvisato. Ci fermiamo a chiacchierare con un sussurratore di animali, un contadino noto per il suo modo gentile di allevare il bestiame. “Non devi urlare”, dice. “Devi parlare con loro a bassa voce.”

In centro, in un posto chiamato Bar Centrale, la proprietaria Maria Neapolitan Mastrota, ci serve una miscela di birra e amari e qui parla dell’eredità di Carlo Levi.

“È venuto qui come un’élite culturale”, dice, “eppure si è identificato con i poveri”.

A un certo punto, mentre Mike aspetta all’ombra in un pomeriggio che raggiunge gli anni ’90, Bruno e io ci lanciamo in un folle tour del quartiere storico abbandonato di Aliano, che Bruno deride sarà presto una città lacerata per far posto a nuove abitazioni.

Infiliamo le nostre macchine fotografiche in dimore abbandonate da tempo, che sembrano immutate nei decenni da quando il loro ultimo proprietario le ha lasciate. Scattiamo all’unisono, Bruno suggerisce angoli di ripresa e piccole cose da notare, una porta qui, un caminetto là.

Naturalmente, Bruno si gira inevitabilmente verso di me, implorandomi di posare, ignorando allegramente il mio disagio. Quando ha il suo colpo si ferma e dice, in inglese:

Ah yes!

Bruno promette di trovare il sindaco di Aliano e, mentre scendiamo dal paese lungo il vertiginoso sentiero tortuoso, ci fermiamo a pranzo in un autogrill. Il locale si chiama Il Tenete, famoso per la sua cucina lucana, con posti a sedere su un portico a vista rinfrescato da nebulizzatori.

E lì, seduto con due colleghi, a festeggiare il suo compleanno, c’è il sindaco di Aliano, Luigi De Lorenzo.

L’uomo stesso.

Bruno ci invita subito a unirci al sindaco e beviamo vino rosso con un piatto vegetariano, seguito da caffè espresso, deserto di limone ghiacciato e colpi di Amaro Lucano, il caratteristico liquore esportato della regione.

Alimentato dall’alcool, chiedo al sindaco se avrebbe liberato Carlo Levy se fosse stato lui a dirigere le cose in passato.

Occhi castani, barba bianca, De Lorenzo non esita.

“Sì, certo”, dice, dimenticando la ferocia del regime fascista di Mussolini che avrebbe potuto avere altre idee. “Sono un sindaco che crede nella libertà. Non sono un fascista. Sono stato socialista per molti anni”.

Lasciamo i freddi confini del sindaco e dei suoi compari, sentendoci storditi.

Mike, che si è astenuto dall’alcol, è tornato al volante. Scherzo dicendo che è El Duce di questo viaggio. Fa arrivare i treni in orario, sempre pronto a spingere me e Bruno mentre ci perdiamo in qualche scena.

Come il Fosso del Bersagliere, la voragine che si trova appena sotto Aliano, così profonda da essere avvolta nell’ombra anche a mezzogiorno.

È il primo mistero che Levi incontra arrivando ad Aliano, le mani legate, scortato da due guardie fasciste inespressive, bande rosse al braccio.

Presto si sintonizza con le immagini e i suoni malinconici della città, le strade strette, i contadini arroccati sui portoni, i lamenti delle donne per la morte di uno di loro, le streghe spettrali che fanno i loro incantesimi in un luogo non toccato dal mondo esterno.

“Un ronzio indistinto mi circonda in grandi cerchi, e al di là c’è un silenzio profondo”, scrive Levi. “Mi sembra di essere caduto dal cielo, come una pietra in uno stagno.”

Trascorriamo il resto della giornata sulle strade secondarie della Basilicata, vagando per i vicoli abbandonati della cittadina collinare chiamata Tursi, conosciuta come Rabatana dai suoi invasori musulmani eoni fa.

Bruno e io non lasciamo mai riposare le nostre macchine fotografiche.

Tursi è anche conosciuta come la patria del poeta Albino Pierro, famoso per le sue opere in dialetto lucano e un tempo candidato al Premio Romanzo di Letteratura.

L’Italia continua ad affascinare, sia nel suo prossimo presente che nel suo antico passato.

Caldo, stanco e assetato, Bruno ci porta a casa di un amico intagliatore, la cui moglie e figlia ci accolgono come una famiglia perduta da tempo.

Mentre ci appoggiamo al muro di pietra esterno, la figlia ci serve numerosi bicchieri di acqua fresca su un vassoio. Prima di partire, la moglie ci porge tre enormi pesche per la strada.

Queste sono le persone che Bruno ama immortalare su pellicola. Più tardi, ci fermiamo a mangiare le pesche sul ciglio della strada, il succo dolce che ci scorre sul viso.

Concludiamo la giornata a Craco, un intero villaggio abbandonato decenni fa, seduto desolato sulla sommità di una collina bruciata dal sole, tutto imbiancato e raggiante per il caldo, che sembra un impero del male su un pianeta lontano in un episodio di Star Wars.

Appassiti dall’umidità, torniamo faticosamente alla nostra macchina con aria condizionata, incontrando un giovane studente universitario francese, solo, in un viaggio vagabondo di sei mesi attraverso l’Europa.

La osserviamo come personaggi dei cartoni animati.

Entrambi gli uomini in seguito ridacchiarono sui pericoli di una simile impresa, con Bruno che nessuna ragazza italiana avrebbe mai tentato una simile follia.

Dico a entrambi che stanno pensando come padri, e non con la spensierata arroganza di qualcuno così giovane, qualcuno che vede solo l’avventura, non il pericolo.

Mentre il sole si avvicina all’orizzonte, l’aria si rinfresca e torniamo verso la cittadina collinare di Pomarico, ma non prima che Bruno insista per portarci a una fontana di campagna poco conosciuta.

È uno dei punti di passaggio solitamente ombreggiati della zona che risale a un’epoca molto lontana, quando i pastori contadini spostavano le loro capre e pecore attraverso questo paesaggio.

Persone come i miei antenati.

Lungo la strada, passiamo davanti a una fontana che Mike e io avevamo visitato solo pochi giorni prima, chinandoci per bere l’acqua fredda, come hanno fatto qui gli uomini assetati per secoli.

“Quello non va bene”, annuncia Bruno con un gesto della mano. “Forse solo per lavare la macchina.”

Mike e io stabiliamo un contatto visivo. Siamo ansiosi di vedere questo posto speciale che Bruno ha in mente.

Parcheggiamo la macchina e percorriamo una stretta strada asfaltata a una corsia, Bruno canta canzoni, si ferma a fotografare questa e quella scena.

Mi sento di nuovo un ragazzo, un Tom Sawyer, con questi due generosi uomini del posto, come se potessi far saltare i sassi attraverso uno stagno se ne incontro uno.

Troviamo il rubinetto appartato di Bruno e, sebbene circondato da una palude fangosa, l’acqua scorre fredda, fresca e dolce. Salto nel fango che mi risucchia i piedi fino alle caviglie.

Ma ne vale la pena. Come essere qui, così lontano da casa, con questi due nuovi amici.

Mi chino per prendere il mio ultimo drink in una giornata lunga, calda e soddisfacente.

Mentre lo faccio, Bruno scatta qualche scatto nella luce che si affievolisce.

“Ah yes!”
