POMARICO, Italy — Sometimes, and I never quite know when the moment will come, I see my father here on the streets of this remote little Basilican hill town where his own father, my grandfather Antonio, was born.

Today, of instance, while I have a cappuccino on the front patio of my favorite watering hole here, Bar Madness, he is there at the table, sitting just across from me, within reach, this tall, quiet gentleman whose life, in the end, was all about family.

Or I’ll be walking the Via Roma, the main commercial street, at dusk, and see an old woman sitting in a chair on the front stoop of her apartment. She’s watching the world go by, with a cane by her side, or a dog to keep her company, or just alone. 

I quietly say hello as I pass. 

And my father is there with me.

“I’m here, Dad,” I say to him. “At this place, where we have roots.”

My father wasn’t born here. He made only one pilgrimage, in 1992, to the village where his father lived a peasant’s life before he emigrated to the U.S. for good around the start of World War I.

When my father was a boy, living in a farm town in rural upstate New York, during the Great Depression, a version of Italian was spoken at home. My grandfather, largely uneducated, a common laborer on the railroad that passed by the back yard of the two-story family house, probably spoke in the Pomarico dialect.

To this day, some of those words remain inside my head, but I never knew what they meant until I arrived here in Pomarico. 

“Vattine!” my father would say when I acted up, imitating his own’s father’s command in dialect. “Go away!”

But my father never learned dialect, or even Italian, for that matter. I remember him telling me that he was ashamed of being Italian in that little rural farm town called East Worcester, N.Y.

Arriving Italians were at the bottom of the immigration totem pole in America in those days, and the insults stung.

“WOP,” the other boys called him. 

Without papers. 

Italian.

Once, my father won a morning spelling bee at school and the teacher wrote his name on the chalk blackboard: John Glionna.

When he returned from lunch, no doubt a plate of pasta cooked up by his mother, Susannah, he found that someone had crossed out his name and written that word he loathed, and perhaps even feared.

WOP.

The teacher, and I’ll be damned if I forget her name now, he mentioned her so many items, took a liking to my tousled-haired father.

“John, I see you’ve got your high-water pants on again,” she told him one day at school, an early reference to trousers that ride too high, exposing the ankles, a suggestion of a growth spurt, or a poor family that relied on hand-me-downs.

My father never wore those pants again.

Another day, she asked innocently, “John, who cuts your hair?”

It was his own father, of course, who probably put a bowl on his head and cut around its edges, maybe a bit like Moe of the Three Stooges.

He blushed, and he never let his father cut his hair again.

Once, reading aloud during class at school, probably in the 6th grade, he encountered the word of a Native American tribe, he no doubt had ever encountered before. 

Instead of Sioux, my father pronounced it Sigh-Ox.

“John what did you say?” the teacher asked, correcting him.

He blushed, and never mispronounced the word again.

But my father was not all innocence. Oh, no, far from it. He was a rascal, or as the Italians say here, a mescalzone. 

A teaser.

At home, when his sister, Stella, baked a cake that collapsed on itself once set on the family dinner table, my father sang “London Bridge is falling down,” and Stella threw the entire cake at him as he hurried out the door.

There are tales of boyhood chicanery that I loved to hear him tell. 

How he once spread limburger cheese on the radiator system at school, producing a smell so rank, they had to end classes for the day.

How, as a Boy Scout, he somehow got a hold of the map to be used on a sponsored treasure hunt, and he and a friend found the watermelon that would have been waiting for the troop. 

They ate it all themselves, of course, probably laughing, spitting seeds. Then they rewrote the treasure map for the rest of the troop. The new destination: a local latrine! Imagine the looks on the faces of the two supervisors when they found out my Dad had duped them all.

How once, to spite a town bully, he and some village boys replaced the fruit filling inside some pastry, exchanging the cherry jam for horse manure. And those donuts were filled with fruit in those days, not the dabs you get today. 

When the enraged bully took a bite and realized what he was eating, he dropped the donut and chased my Dad, who was the youngest by far. 

The big boy never caught him, that little mescalzone.

Decades later, in 1992, my father and mother travelled back to Pomarico. Just before he died, my grandfather, Antonio, had returned, one last time, the first in 60 years. 

Now it was my father’s turn.

I remember his excitement as he studied the language in an adult class in the retirement community where he lived in Florida.

I’d call on the phone and he’d say, “Jay, let me throw a little Italian at you.”

And he would, most of it tortured, mispronounced, even murderous, like mine is today.

I’d laugh, and correct his mistakes, and he always challenged me, saying that I didn’t know what I was talking about, that he was right, and I was wrong.

And I can imagine smiling as he spoke those words on the telephone line.

He was still a teaser, a mescalzone.

Once, on a train hurtling toward Rome, my father and I got into a debate over the pronunciation of an Italian word, which I insisted was siamo, or “we are.”

My father said it was siami, which I mocked him sounded like some Arabian command, Not “Open Sesame!” but “Open Siami!”

But he would not be swayed. He gently mocked me, as he did whenever we reached such an impasse, saying I was just a fool, (which I was then, and remain now.)

To settle the matter, I asked an Italian man sitting just across from us on the train. When he heard the choices, he waggled his finger and clicked his tongue at my Dad.

No, no, he said. There is no such word as siami.

My father never gave in. The man had misunderstood, he said, his face m morphing into that twisted grin when he was cornered, when he knew he was wrong. 

It was siami. And that was that.

We spent several days in Pomarico on that trip and I still have the photos of my parents posing with various distant cousins. Many of those shots were taken at the same spots I visit now, and each time I do, I feel his presence, his spirit.

We met my late-cousin Vicenzo, who embraced my father with a long emotional hug as though he was a long lost brother, not a first-cousin he’d never met before.

Our cousin, Giovanni Glionna, our namesake here, played tour guide for my parents here, taking them places, introducing them to elderly relatives that, like my mother and father themselves, are long gone now.

There is a picture of my Dad on one knee, leaning in to kiss Giovanni’s elderly mother on the cheek. There is such sweetness in that moment, an image of a Son of Italy who was glad to be here in the place where his father was raised, meeting, hugging and even kissing these members of his bloodline on the far side of the world.

But there is a moment with my father in Italy that will be forever etched into my memory, one so sweet it makes me weep to recall it.

When we left Pomarico, Giovanni gifted us with two bottles of wine made from grapes he’d grown on his farm outside town, a present stored in large plastic soda bottles.

Without preservatives, we knew there was a looming expiration date to this wine, which would quickly morph into something sour, like vinegar.

Days later, on a Friday night, my parents and I were taking a train from Rome to Venice. We’d arrived late at the station and even had to run to catch the departing rail cars.

The train was packed with weekend travelers and some Italian gentleman gave up his seat for my winded mother. My father and I walked through from end to end of that train, looking for seats, finally settling on a spot out in the open, between two shifting cars.

That’s when I twisted open the plastic cap on the last bottle of wine, taking a long drink, and handing it to my father. He looked me in the eye and took the bottle. There was no “This isn’t the time” lecture.

I remember this like it happened yesterday, or today, five minutes ago.

He tipped his head back and took a long, long, luxurious swig from that bottle of wine, made with grapes grown on the same land that his father walked as a boy.

It was like he was taking a long, last taste of Italy itself.

We finished the bottle there on that train, in the end laughing and woozy, two mescalzone, American rascals, getting drunk on a train that rattled through the countryside, somewhere in the land where our roots run deep.

This morning, contemplating my cappuccino, with my father’s very presence there with me, I toasted this lifeline mentor, and finished my drink in one gulp.

Ti amo papà. Il tuo ricordo rimarrà sempre con me.

POMARICO JOURNAL: Lo spirito di mio padre è ovunque qui

POMARICO, Italia — A volte, e non so mai quando verrà il momento, vedo mio padre qui per le strade di questo remoto paesino collinare della Basilicana dove è nato suo padre, mio ​​nonno Antonio.

Oggi, per esempio, mentre prendo un cappuccino nel patio anteriore del mio locale preferito, il Bar Madness, lui è lì al tavolo, seduto proprio di fronte a me, a portata di mano, questo signore alto e tranquillo la cui vita, nel fine, era tutta una questione di famiglia.

Oppure camminerò per Via Roma, la principale strada commerciale, al crepuscolo, e vedrò una donna anziana seduta su una sedia sulla veranda del suo appartamento. Sta guardando il mondo che passa, con un bastone al suo fianco, o un cane per farle compagnia, o semplicemente da sola.

E mio padre è lì con me.

“Sono qui, papà” gli dico. “In questo posto, dove abbiamo radici.”

Mio padre non è nato qui. Fece un solo pellegrinaggio, nel 1992, nel villaggio dove suo padre viveva una vita contadina prima di emigrare definitivamente negli Stati Uniti all’inizio della prima guerra mondiale.

Quando mio padre era un ragazzo, viveva in una cittadina rurale nelle zone rurali del nord dello stato di New York, durante la Grande Depressione, a casa si parlava una versione dell’italiano. Mio nonno, in gran parte ignorante, operaio comune della ferrovia che passava dal cortile sul retro della casa di famiglia a due piani, parlava probabilmente in dialetto pomarico.

Ancora oggi alcune di quelle parole mi sono rimaste in testa, ma non ho mai saputo cosa significassero finché non sono arrivato qui a Pomarico.

“Vattino!” diceva mio padre quando facevo i capricci, imitando in dialetto il comando di suo padre. “Andare via!”

Ma mio padre non ha mai imparato il dialetto, e nemmeno l’italiano, del resto. Ricordo che mi disse che si vergognava di essere italiano in quella piccola cittadina rurale chiamata East Worcester, New York.

Gli italiani in arrivo erano in quei giorni in fondo al totem dell’immigrazione in America, e gli insulti pungevano.

“WOP”, lo chiamavano gli altri ragazzi.

Senza documenti.

Italiano.

Una volta mio padre vinse un’ape mattutina di ortografia a scuola e l’insegnante scrisse il suo nome sulla lavagna di gesso: John Glionna.

Quando tornò dal pranzo, senza dubbio un piatto di pasta cucinato da sua madre, Susannah, scoprì che qualcuno aveva cancellato il suo nome e scritto quella parola che detestava, e forse anche temeva.

WOP.

L’insegnante, e che io sia dannato se ora dimentico il suo nome, le ha menzionato così tante cose, ha preso in simpatia mio padre dai capelli arruffati.

“John, vedo che hai di nuovo i tuoi pantaloni per l’acqua alta”, gli disse un giorno a scuola, un riferimento precoce ai pantaloni che si alzano troppo, esponendo le caviglie, un suggerimento di uno scatto di crescita o di un povero famiglia che faceva affidamento su oggetti di seconda mano.

Mio padre non ha mai più indossato quei pantaloni.

Un altro giorno, ha chiesto innocentemente: “John, chi ti taglia i capelli?”

È stato suo padre, ovviamente, che probabilmente si è messo una ciotola sulla testa e ne ha tagliato i bordi, forse un po’ come Moe dei Tre Marmittoni.

Arrossì e non permise mai più a suo padre di tagliargli i capelli.

Una volta, leggendo ad alta voce durante le lezioni a scuola, probabilmente in prima media, incontrò la parola di una tribù di nativi americani, che senza dubbio aveva mai incontrato prima.

Invece di Sioux, mio ​​padre lo pronunciava Sigh-Ox.

“Giovanni cosa hai detto?” chiese l’insegnante correggendolo.

Arrossì e non pronunciò mai più male la parola.

Ma mio padre non era tutto innocenza. Oh, no, tutt’altro. Era un mascalzone, o come dicono qui gli italiani, un mescalzone.

Un teaser.

A casa, quando sua sorella Stella preparava una torta che crollava su se stessa una volta messa sulla tavola di famiglia, mio ​​padre cantava “Il London Bridge sta cadendo” e Stella gli lanciava l’intera torta mentre si affrettava a uscire dalla porta.

Ci sono storie di imbrogli d’infanzia che mi piaceva sentirgli raccontare.

Come una volta ha spalmato il formaggio limburger sull’impianto di riscaldamento a scuola, producendo un odore così rancido che hanno dovuto terminare le lezioni per la giornata.

Come, come boy scout, in qualche modo ha ottenuto la mappa da utilizzare in una caccia al tesoro sponsorizzata, e lui e un amico hanno trovato l’anguria che avrebbe aspettato la truppa.

Lo mangiarono tutto da soli, ovviamente, probabilmente ridendo, sputando semi, e quando gli altri ragazzi capirono la sfida e arrivarono sul luogo dell’aspirante premio, non c’era niente lì.

Come una volta, per far dispetto a un prepotente del paese, lui e alcuni ragazzi del villaggio sostituirono il ripieno di frutta dentro a una pasta sfoglia, scambiando la marmellata di ciliegie con il letame di cavallo. E quelle ciambelle erano piene di frutta in quei giorni, non i dab che ottieni oggi.

Quando il bullo infuriato ha dato un morso e si è reso conto di cosa stava mangiando, ha lasciato cadere la ciambella e ha inseguito mio padre, che era di gran lunga il più giovane.

Il ragazzone non l’ha mai preso, quel piccolo mescalzone.

Decenni dopo, nel 1992, mio ​​padre e mia madre tornarono a Pomarico. Poco prima di morire, mio ​​nonno Antonio era tornato, un’ultima volta, la prima in 60 anni.

Ora toccava a mio padre.

Ricordo la sua eccitazione mentre studiava la lingua in una classe per adulti nella comunità di pensionati dove viveva in Florida.

Chiamavo al telefono e lui diceva: “Jay, lascia che ti dia un po’ di italiano”.

E lo farebbe, per la maggior parte torturato, pronunciato male, persino omicida, come lo è il mio oggi.

Ridevo e correggevo i suoi errori, e lui mi sfidava sempre, dicendo che non sapevo di cosa stavo parlando, che aveva ragione e io torto.

E posso immaginare di sorridere mentre pronunciava quelle parole sulla linea telefonica.

Era ancora un teaser, un mescalzone.

Una volta, su un treno che sfrecciava verso Roma, io e mio padre abbiamo avuto una discussione sulla pronuncia di una parola italiana, che io insistevo fosse siamo, o “siamo”.

Mio padre ha detto che era siami, che io lo prendevo in giro suonava come un comando arabo, non “Apri sesamo!” ma “Apri il Siami!”

Ma non sarebbe stato influenzato. Mi ha gentilmente preso in giro, come faceva ogni volta che raggiungevamo una tale impasse, dicendo che ero solo uno sciocco (cosa che ero allora, e rimango ora).

Per risolvere la questione, ho chiesto a un uomo italiano seduto proprio di fronte a noi sul treno. Quando ha sentito le scelte, ha agitato il dito e ha fatto schioccare la lingua in direzione di mio padre.

No, no, disse. Non esiste una parola come siami.

Mio padre non si è mai arreso. L’uomo aveva frainteso, ha detto, la sua faccia si è trasformata in quel sorriso contorto quando è stato messo alle strette, quando sapeva di avere torto.

Era siami. E quello era quello.

Passammo diversi giorni a Pomarico in quel viaggio e conservo ancora le foto dei miei genitori in posa con vari cugini alla lontana. Molti di quegli scatti sono stati realizzati negli stessi punti che visito ora, e ogni volta che lo faccio, sento la sua presenza, il suo spirito.

Abbiamo incontrato il mio defunto cugino Vincenzo, che ha abbracciato mio padre con un lungo abbraccio commosso come se fosse un fratello perduto da tempo, non un cugino di primo grado che non aveva mai incontrato prima.

Nostro cugino, Giovanni Glionna, il nostro omonimo qui, ha fatto da guida turistica ai miei genitori qui, portandoli in giro, presentandoli a parenti anziani che, come mia madre e mio padre stessi, ormai non ci sono più.

C’è una foto di mio padre in ginocchio, che si china per baciare sulla guancia l’anziana madre di Giovanni. C’è tanta dolcezza in quel momento, l’immagine di un figlio d’Italia che era felice di essere qui nel luogo in cui suo padre è cresciuto, incontrando, abbracciando e persino baciando questi membri della sua stirpe dall’altra parte del mondo.

Ma c’è un momento con mio padre in Italia che rimarrà impresso per sempre nella mia memoria, così dolce che mi fa piangere ricordarlo.

Quando abbiamo lasciato Pomarico, Giovanni ci ha regalato due bottiglie di vino ottenuto da uve che aveva coltivato nella sua fattoria fuori città, un regalo conservato in grandi bottiglie di plastica per bibite.

Senza conservanti, sapevamo che c’era una data di scadenza imminente per questo vino, che si sarebbe rapidamente trasformato in qualcosa di acido, come l’aceto.

Giorni dopo, un venerdì sera, io e i miei genitori stavamo prendendo un treno da Roma a Venezia. Eravamo arrivati ​​tardi alla stazione e dovevamo anche correre per prendere i vagoni in partenza.

Il treno era pieno di viaggiatori del fine settimana e un gentiluomo italiano ha ceduto il posto a mia madre senza fiato. Mio padre ed io abbiamo attraversato quel treno da un capo all’altro, alla ricerca di posti, alla fine ci siamo sistemati in un posto all’aperto, tra due vagoni in movimento.

È stato allora che ho aperto il tappo di plastica dell’ultima bottiglia di vino, bevendo un lungo sorso e porgendolo a mio padre. Mi guardò negli occhi e prese la bottiglia. Non c’era nessuna conferenza “Questo non è il momento”.

Lo ricordo come se fosse successo ieri, o oggi, cinque minuti fa.

Inclinò la testa all’indietro e bevve un lungo, lungo, sontuoso sorso da quella bottiglia di vino, fatta con uve coltivate nella stessa terra che suo padre percorreva da ragazzo.

Era come se stesse prendendo un lungo, ultimo assaggio dell’Italia stessa.

Abbiamo finito la bottiglia lì su quel treno, alla fine ridendo e storditi, due mescalzone, mascalzoni americani, ubriacati su un treno che sferragliava per la campagna, da qualche parte nella terra dove le nostre radici affondano.

Stamattina, contemplando il mio cappuccino, con la presenza stessa di mio padre lì con me, ho brindato a questo mentore di salvezza e ho finito il mio drink in un sorso.

Ti amo papà. Il tuo ricordo rimarrà sempre con me.
