POMARICO, ITALY — In small Italian towns like this, every family is given a nickname, one usually spoken in the local dialectic, rarely in proper Italian.

Your sobriquet might denote some salient physical feature, like having big ears, a big mouth, or some other familial detail, like what a distant relative did for a living.

Once bestowed, the AKA is handed down from father to son in perpetuity. Some residents might forget your given name, but never your family handle.

That one lasts forever, whether you like it or not.

The local history society has a book that lists pages and pages of family nicknames. It’s an important part of history for this tiny town, a connection with the past.

My family alias is Ciupuddone. (choopa-doan)

It means Big Onion.

But first things first. Here in Pomarico, my last name is not pronounced with the hard GLI, but with a softer sounding lli, like in million. Yee-onna. Pronounce a hard G and no one will understand you.

Yet they all understand Ciupuddone.

I have heard this peculiar moniker for years, ever since I first arrived in Pomarico 35 years ago. My gregarious second-cousin Giovanni Glionna would introduce me to friends who would slap my back and say I was a real Ciupuddone. 

But how did this family moniker get its start?

And how many Ciupuddone are left in Pomarico, precisely?

The other day, after finishing plates of pasta and lamb chops at his little farm house in the countryside, my cousin explains the connection.

Giovanni is 85. He has three daughters, a passel of grandchildren and a few great-grandkids. We’re second-cousins: Our grandfathers were brothers, and grew up together before mine emigrated to the U.S. as a young man.

Our great-great grandfather was a peasant farmer who one season planted a crop of onions on fallow land. He buried his seeds in deep furrows and the weather conditions proved just right to produce a bumper crop.

His onions were huge, explains Giovanni, using his hands to demonstrate,

Townsfolk took notice and bestowed him with the colorful nickname that has since been passed down to his descendants.

The tag has proven useful. Over generations, it has distinguished my kin from four other unrelated local families named Glionna.

Make no mistake, we’re the Ciupuddone Glionnas. 

Others are the Volpe, or fox clan, and Terratosta, or hard-earth clan. Nobody can recall the last one because the family long ago moved away.

There are rules to these monikers. They’re only passed between male members, so Giovanni is the last Ciupuddone in his line of the family. His daughters and their descendants don’t qualify to bear the name.

But two of Giovanni’s brothers had sons, who had sons of their own, so there are still a number of Big Onions left around Pomarico, including Roberto, Nico and young Enzo. 

All Glionnas. All Ciupuddone.

Now I can announce myself proudly as the American Ciupuddone.

And even know the story behind the name. 

I sit in the kitchen of my cousin, Katia, drinking thimbles of strong Italian espresso and discussing what has become of family members I first met here in 1987.

Katia vanishes momentarily and reappears with a small cigar box, which she sits gently before me. 

No mere wooden box, this is more like Tutankamum’s tomb. 

There are treasures held within.

The box dates from pre-World War Two. Across the top reads the word, “Optima,” advertising that its contents were “mild aromatic sweet.” The producer was A. Santaella & Co. from Tampa, Florida.

Inside are photos Katia has kept over the years. Included are pictures of my grandfather, Antonio, father, brother, uncle and aunts, photos I have never seen before.

In the 1970s, my grandfather made a last pilgrimage to his Italian home town before he died at age 84. He was accompanied by my Aunt Pauline, the wife of my Uncle Joe, a cigar smoker just like my grandfather. 

Katia was too young to recall the visit, but Pauline left the cigar box behind, perhaps as a memento. And it was later handed down to Katia.

These old pictures transport me to an alternative family universe that has long remained a mystery. I too lived through these years, but have never before seen these moments captured on film.

But I, too, bear gifts from the past.

I bring along pictures had taken on trips to Pomarico in 1987 and 1993. The images include Katia as a young girl, her late mother and father, her sisters and a brother.

Her eyes glisten as she pores through them. She was there when they were taken, but she doesn’t remember. For Katia, the images are fresh, and they elicit strong images of a more innocent time in life before she married and had her own children.

She chooses several to keep, including one with her father, Angelo, and her parents together. They are meaningful moments and I am glad she now has them.

I spread the wealth with these old photographs.

With other cousins, they bring both joy and sorrow. In turn, they show me photos taken when I was younger and crazier, my hair longer, a long-lost version of myself.

One cousin, Ilaria, now a mother of three, gushes at photos of herself as a precious small girl wearing red lipstick she had smeared on her face. 

When I show my cousin Giovanni a sepia-toned image of his grandmother, he grows silent. I don’t recall how the photo came into my possession but, amazingly, he has never seen it before.

When he was a boy, his ailing grandmother had pulled him close one afternoon. He didn’t know it, but she was on her deathbed. 

She died in his arms. 

Now tears well in his eyes. Of course, I give him the photograph, this long-lost memory he will never be without again.

Such mementoes belong in the hands of those who value them most. So dry your eyes, Giovanni, your cherished grandmother yet lives.

My new friend Mike texts me one evening:

“Want to go for a walk?” he writes. “A passeggiata?”

Mike is about my age and was born in Pomarico. He moved to New York as a young boy and was educated there, at one point driving a city bus for a living.

Now he’s back home, this man of two worlds who has seen life on the other side but chooses the slower, sweeter ways of southern Italy.

There’s something else about Mike: He speaks good English, with a Brooklyn accent.

We meet at 9 p.m. in front of the Catholic church in a small piazza that was once the cultural center of town, before a new section was built in the 1960s. Without a word, we turn and, side by side, walk slowly along the center drag, the Via Roma.

The temperature has cooled and the last daylight lingers as we begin a distinct social ritual of togetherness practiced across Italy: the evening walk, the time to see and be seen, share news and gossip and politics, perhaps pause at a sidewalk cafe for an apertif, a cold beer or gelato.

It’s like how Americans used to feel about going to the mall: You wore your best duds. You expected to run into people you know.

That’s the passeggiata.

Mark Twain believed that walking “times the movement of the tongue.” And it’s true. While on a passeggiata, the ideas flow, words come.

“We usually talk about politics,” Mike explains. “Or farm work, or anything.”

Generations ago, during Pomarico’s evening passeggiata, men walked on one side of the street, the women on the other.

Those days are long gone. 

Now gaggles of teens loom behind us, anxious to pass. Young girls walk together closely, arms tucked. We pass older women sitting on door stoops, men congregating on park benches, families lounging on tables outside restaurants.

We greet everyone we pass, with a soulful Buonasera. The atmosphere feels like small-town America in the 1950s, more innocent, danger-free.

We walk slowly, talking about our summer plans, until we reach a certain point on the far side of town. That’s where Mike suddenly turns and we head back the way we came.

When we reach our starting point, he says, “Let’s go again. It’s only 9:30 p.m.”

So we repass the stone fronts of the ducal palace and the convent that now serves as city hall. We stop as Mike introduces me to the town mayor, Francesco Mancini, who stands from his sidewalk table to shake my hand and invite me to pay him a visit later in the week.

We take our place on a bench in front of a statue listing the names of the local boys who died in the two world wars.

“Let’s see if there are any Glionnas here,” Mike says.

There aren’t.

We’re in the town’s newer piazza, now the place to see and be seen. A car pulls up and a hefty woman and her husband head off arm in arm. Mike says she’s probably tired of being cooped up inside the house all day and wants to take in some air.

By 11 p.m., the streets of Pomarico will be empty, bars and cafes closed, leaving only the ghosts of the dukes and the nuns and all those hardworking farmers past.

I stop to drink from a public fountain and when we reach our starting point, Mike and I softly say goodnight and go in separate directions.

Our passeggiata done, it’s time for bed.

Lettera di Pomarico: La grossa cipolla, foto ricordo e passeggiata serale

POMARICO, Italia — Nei piccoli paesi italiani come questa, a tutti viene dato un soprannome, solitamente pronunciato nella dialettale locale, raramente nell’italiano corretto.

Il tuo soprannome potrebbe denotare qualche caratteristica fisica saliente, come avere grandi orecchie, una grande bocca o qualche altro dettaglio familiare, come quello che faceva un lontano parente per vivere.
Una volta conferito, l’AKA viene tramandato di padre in figlio. Alcuni residenti potrebbero dimenticare il tuo nome, ma mai la gestione della tua città. Quello dura per sempre, che ti piaccia o no.La società storica locale ha un libro che elenca, pagine e pagine di soprannomi di famiglia. Significa Grande Cipolla.
Sono anni che sento questo strano soprannome, da quando sono arrivato a Pomarico 35 anni fa. Mio gregario cugino di secondo grado Giovanni Glionna mi presentava agli amici che mi davano pacche sulla schiena e dicevano che ero un vero Ciupuddone.
Ma come ha avuto inizio questo soprannome di famiglia? E quanti Ciupuddone sono rimasti a Pomarico, precisamente?
L’altro giorno, dopo aver finito piatti di pasta e costolette d’agnello nel suo piccolo casale di campagna, Giovanni spiega il legame.
Giovanni ha 85 anni. Ha tre figlie, un paio di nipoti e qualche pronipote. Siamo cugini di secondo grado: i nostri nonni erano fratelli e sono cresciuti insieme prima che il mio emigrasse negli Stati Uniti da giovane.
Il nostro bis-bisnonno era un contadino che una stagione piantò un raccolto di cipolle su un terreno incolto. Ha seppellito i suoi semi in solchi profondi e le condizioni meteorologiche si sono rivelate perfette per produrre un raccolto eccezionale.
Le sue cipolle erano enormi, spiega Giovanni, usando le mani per dimostrare,
I cittadini se ne accorsero e gli diedero il colorato soprannome che da allora è stato tramandato ai suoi discendenti.
Il tag si è dimostrato utile. Nel corso delle generazioni, ha distinto i miei parenti da altre quattro famiglie locali non imparentate chiamate Glionna.
Non commettere errori, siamo i Ciupuddone Glionnas.
Altri sono i Volpe, o clan dei lupi, e i Terratosta, o clan della terra dura. Nessuno può ricordare l’ultimo perché la famiglia si è trasferita molto tempo fa.
Ci sono regole per questi moniker. Sono trasmessi solo tra membri maschi, quindi Giovanni è l’ultimo Ciupuddon nel suo ramo della famiglia. Le sue figlie ei loro discendenti non sono cipolle e non lo saranno mai.
Ma due dei fratelli di Giovanni avevano figli, che ebbero figli loro, quindi ci sono ancora parecchi Cipolloni intorno a Pomarico, tra cui Roberto, Nico e il giovane Enzo.
Tutti Glionna. Tutti Ciupuddone.
E ora posso annunciarmi con orgoglio come il Ciupuddone americano e persino conoscere la storia dietro il nome.

Mi siedo nella cucina di mia cugina Katia, bevendo ditali di forte espresso italiano e discutendo di cosa ne è stato dei membri della famiglia che ho incontrato per la prima volta qui nel 1987.

Katia scompare momentaneamente e riappare con una piccola scatola di sigari, che posa dolcemente davanti a me.
Non una semplice scatola di legno, questa è più simile alla tomba di Tutankamum.
Ci sono tesori custoditi all’interno.
La scatola risale a prima della seconda guerra mondiale. In alto si legge la parola “Optima”, che annuncia che il suo contenuto era “lievemente aromatico dolce”. Il produttore era A. Santaella & Co. di Tampa, Florida.
All’interno ci sono le foto che Katia ha conservato nel corso degli anni. Sono incluse le foto di mio nonno, Antonio, padre, fratello, zio e zie, foto che non avevo mai visto prima.
Negli anni ’70 mio nonno fece un ultimo pellegrinaggio nella sua città natale italiana prima di morire all’età di 84 anni. Era accompagnato da mia zia Pauline, la moglie di mio zio Joe, un fumatore di sigari proprio come mio nonno.
Katia era troppo giovane per ricordare la visita, ma Pauline ha lasciato la scatola dei sigari, forse come ricordo. E poi è stato tramandato a Catia.
Queste vecchie foto mi trasportano in un universo familiare alternativo che è rimasto a lungo un mistero. Anch’io ho vissuto questi anni, ma non avevo mai visto questi momenti catturati su pellicola.
Ma anch’io porto doni del passato.
Porto con me foto scattate durante i viaggi a Pomarico nel 1987 e nel 1993. Le immagini includono Katia da ragazzina, la sua defunta madre e suo padre, le sue sorelle e un fratello.
I suoi occhi brillano mentre li scruta. Era lì quando sono stati presi, ma non ricorda. Per Katia le immagini sono fresche e suscitano forti emozioni.
Ne sceglie diversi da tenere, incluso uno con suo padre, Angelo, ei suoi genitori insieme. Sono momenti significativi e sono contento che ora li abbia.
Ho diffuso la ricchezza con queste vecchie fotografie. Con altri cugini, portano gioia e dolore. A loro volta, mi mostrano foto scattate quando ero più giovane e più pazzo, i miei capelli più lunghi, una versione perduta di me stesso.
Una cugina, Ilaria, ora madre di tre figli, adora le foto di se stessa come una preziosa bambina con il rossetto rosso che si era spalmata sul viso.
Quando mostro a mio cugino Giovanni un’immagine color seppia di sua nonna, lui tace. Non ricordo come la foto sia entrata in mio possesso ma, sorprendentemente, non l’ha mai vista prima.
Quando era ragazzo, sua nonna malata lo aveva avvicinato un pomeriggio. Lui non lo sapeva, ma lei era sul letto di morte.
È morta tra le sue braccia.
Adesso ha le lacrime agli occhi. Certo, gli do la fotografia, questo ricordo perduto da tempo di cui non sarà mai più privo.
Tali ricordi appartengono alle mani di coloro che li apprezzano di più. Quindi asciugati gli occhi, Giovanni, la tua cara nonna vive ancora.

Il mio nuovo amico Mike una sera mi scrive:

“Vuoi fare una passeggiata?” lui scrive. “Una passeggiata?”
Mike ha più o meno la mia età ed è nato a Pomarico. Si è trasferito a New York da ragazzo e lì ha studiato, guidando a un certo punto un autobus urbano per vivere.
Ora è tornato a casa, quest’uomo dei due mondi che ha visto la vita dall’altra parte ma sceglie le strade più lente e dolci del sud Italia.
C’è qualcos’altro in Mike: parla un buon inglese, con un accento di Brooklyn.
Ci incontriamo alle 21:00 di fronte alla chiesa cattolica in una piazzetta che un tempo era il centro culturale della città, prima della costruzione di una nuova sezione negli anni ’60. Senza una parola, ci voltiamo e, fianco a fianco, percorriamo lentamente la via del centro, la via Roma.
La temperatura si è raffreddata e l’ultima luce del giorno indugia mentre iniziamo un distinto rituale sociale di unione praticato in tutta Italia: la passeggiata serale, il tempo per vedere ed essere visti, condividere notizie, pettegolezzi e politica, magari sostare in un caffè all’aperto per un aperitivo , una birra fredda o un gelato.
È come si sentivano gli americani quando andavano al centro commerciale: indossavi i tuoi vestiti migliori. Ti aspettavi di incontrare persone che conosci.
Questa è la passeggiata.
Mark Twain credeva che camminare “sequenza il movimento della lingua”. Ed è vero. Durante una passeggiata le idee scorrono, le parole arrivano.
“Di solito parliamo di politica”, spiega Mike. “O lavoro agricolo, o qualsiasi altra cosa.”
Generazioni fa, durante la passeggiata serale di Pomarico, gli uomini camminavano da un lato della strada, le donne dall’altro.
Quei giorni sono passati da tempo.
Ora gruppi di adolescenti si profilano dietro di noi, ansiosi di passare. Le ragazze camminano insieme da vicino, le braccia piegate. Incrociamo donne anziane sedute sui gradini delle porte, uomini che si riuniscono sulle panchine del parco, famiglie che si rilassano sui tavoli fuori dai ristoranti.
Salutiamo tutti quelli che incontriamo, con un sincero Buonasera. L’atmosfera sembra l’America di una piccola città negli anni ’50, più innocente, senza pericoli.
Camminiamo lentamente, parlando dei nostri programmi per l’estate, fino a raggiungere un certo punto dall’altra parte della città. È lì che Mike si volta improvvisamente e torniamo indietro da dove siamo venuti.
Quando raggiungiamo il nostro punto di partenza, dice: “Ripartiamo. Sono solo le 21:30.»
Ripassiamo così le facciate in pietra del palazzo ducale e del convento che oggi funge da municipio. Ci fermiamo quando Mike mi presenta il sindaco della città, Francesco Mancini, che si alza dal suo tavolo sul marciapiede per stringermi la mano e invitarmi a fargli visita nel corso della settimana.
Prendiamo posto su una panchina davanti a una statua che elenca i nomi dei ragazzi del posto caduti nelle due guerre mondiali.
“Vediamo se ci sono Glionnas qui”, dice Mike.
Non ci sono.
Siamo nella nuova piazza della città, ora il luogo dove vedere ed essere visti. Una macchina si ferma e una donna corpulenta e suo marito se ne vanno a braccetto. Mike dice che probabilmente è stanca di stare rinchiusa in casa tutto il giorno e vuole prendere una boccata d’aria.
Entro le 23:00 le strade di Pomarico saranno vuote, bar e caffè chiusi, lasciando solo i fantasmi dei duchi e delle suore e di tutti quei laboriosi contadini del passato.
Mi fermo a bere da una fontana pubblica e quando raggiungiamo il nostro punto di partenza, io e Mike ci salutiamo dolcemente e ci dirigiamo in direzioni separate.
La nostra passeggiata è finita, è ora di andare a letto.
